[12:34] seem to be getting it fine === sm is now known as sm-bbl === rcchan [~rcchan@netblock-66-245-251-214.dslextreme.com] has joined #ubuntu-doc === sm-bbl is now known as sm [07:48] African Greetings. Another sunshine morning in Johannesburg [07:55] morning froud from a hot sticky cape town [07:56] sunny but cool this morning, guess there are benefits to not having an ocean near. [07:57] at least i can go jump in the sea when it gets to hot ... [07:58] I have a salt water swimming pool in the front yard [07:58] but no wave machine [07:58] and no white beach sand [07:58] well that could be a blessing, the sand thing I mean [07:59] and the water is not as cold as in the sea here [08:00] yes, so I found out. Thought I was never going to see my you know what again. [08:01] Ah pool heating === froud always know when maskie is gonna be online because of call-more time :-) [08:23] unfortunately not all of us have the joys of dsl [08:23] Ah that reminds me. What about the new packages telscum are doing [08:23] they could be good for you [08:23] Hmmm but then there is the cap [08:39] Ho Hum. Does anyone care to review and close my last commits :-/ pretty please === froud note to enrico release notes now contain images. I have modified "make imagelist:" to create a txt file that provides the list of images for your input. You may have to update imgsel and other stuff. [08:57] Anyone want to add ubuntu-docs to the release notes :-) [09:02] hi froud. I looked at your latest in quickguide [09:02] ok [09:02] froud, problem with dsl is that on top of the adsl line cost you have to pay high ISP costs ... my ISDN dialup ISP costs at very low at the moment [09:02] *our* latest quick guide === froud smiles at maskie === froud hugs his 512 dsl [09:03] I don't feel qualified to convert from "review" to "complete"... spelling is ok though... === froud hopes the price comes down [09:03] US Spelling is good. Go for it [09:03] any patches for grammar and spelling problems welcome [09:04] not all contributors are doing spellchecks and most are not english speakers. so go for it [09:04] I am burning latest hoary disk... i boot it soon to see if and how new apps work... :-) [09:04] do you have warty [09:04] you can just upgrade online [09:04] to hoary [09:05] it's fatser and you can see the changes incrementally [09:05] yes, i have warty... how do i upgrade... using synaptic [09:05] yes lemme get the uri's fo ryou [09:07] thanks [09:13] someday it would be nice to see a style guide for ubuntu docs [09:13] something similar to http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/ [09:17] I am booting hoary on laptop, but don't want to install [09:17] how to run as live cd? [09:18] install qemu [09:18] sorry I had to step out now back [09:18] yes, styleguide will develop in time === jeffsch is googling qemu [09:18] here comes the info === venda [~sean@ndn-165-131-148.telkomadsl.co.za] has joined #ubuntu-doc [09:20] jeffsch, in synaptic select Settings > Repositories [09:21] click add [09:21] type = binary [09:21] uri = http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ [09:22] distribution = hoary [09:22] sections = main restricted [09:23] next [09:23] add again [09:23] this time [09:23] type = source [09:23] uri "as above" [09:23] distribution = "as above" [09:24] sections = "as above" [09:24] next [09:24] add again [09:25] type binary [09:25] uri = http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ [09:25] distribution = hoary-security [09:26] sections = main restricted [09:26] next [09:26] add again [09:26] type source [09:26] uri = http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ [09:27] distribution = hoary-security [09:27] sections = main restricted [09:27] thats it [09:28] oh remember to deselect warty [09:28] jeffsch: hope that helps [09:31] jeffsch: trickie is also looking for review of the release notes if you feel like doing it ;;;;;;-) [09:33] venda: done. so now i just select all upgradeable packages? [09:33] jeffsch: yes [09:34] btw. venda is me on another host [09:34] froud: i still irc newbie... when you say "here comes info" and then "hope this helps" ???? [09:35] DOH!!! venda = froud!!!! [09:35] after you have done the upgrade the Ubuntu Update Manager will do the rest for you [09:35] you can configure the update-manager to download the updates for you but not install until you tell it to [09:35] handy really [09:36] ok i do it now. wish me luck... [09:36] every now and then I just run the update manager and see what it has for me. Then I upgrade to the next step in hoary [09:37] that's what i've been doing with warty, but i didn't know until know how to get hoary. [09:37] thanks eh [09:38] cool, you can also use update-manager to see the changlog of what happened on a package. That is how I check to see if anyting impacts on documentation we are doing [09:40] for example the note "Added acpi-support to desktop-ia64" may add something to the desktop so I go looking to see once the ubuntu-desktop package is installed [09:42] jeffsch: I do caution if you plan on using the same method post hoary release for grumpy. It is likely that the distro will, at first, become unstable during grumpy devel === froud is off for awhile [09:55] hmmm... i try try to install hoary on my laptop, but it tells me that it will destroy existing partitions [09:55] am I missing something? surely it will install beside windows(spit) [10:05] jeffsch: have you tried to chose to partition the disk by yourself? [10:09] there is a choice: Erase entire disk, or Manually edit [10:09] I chose manually edit [10:11] DOH!!! [10:11] I missed something... [10:12] it didn't seem obvious to me which item on the list to select.... [10:12] I chose the IDE1 master (hda) blah blah blah [10:13] instead of the #1 primary blah blah blah, which is indented and not looking like its own selection... :( [10:15] ok. now i see "You are editing partition #1 of IDE1 master (hda). This partition is formatted with the ntfs" [10:17] Use as: do not use, Bootable flag: on, Size: 80.0 GB [10:17] how to partition? in warty install (IRC) it seemed obvious what to do, but now.... :( [10:21] froud: i will take a look at release notes by trickie after my hoary upgrade is complete [10:29] ok. that does it. I am not putting hoary on my laptop. I am too afraid it will destroy my existing partition === hsprang [~henning@c147208.adsl.hansenet.de] has joined #ubuntu-doc [10:57] jeffsch: does your partition take the whole disk [10:57] the ntfs one [10:57] yes [11:07] you can do a resize, but it can be risky [11:08] no sur eif the hoary install does a resize safely I never tested it [11:09] i don't recall seeing a resize option. it only seemed that I could overwrite or not install [11:10] but I could be wrong - it is 2am afterall [11:10] Hmm dunno really. My SuSE 9.2 it just does a resize for you [11:10] best to do this type of thing with a clear head [11:11] perhaps look for a tool that will help you resize the partition. Use that to do the work and then just install hoary to the new partition [11:11] have you asked on #uubuntu [11:12] #ubuntu [11:14] zoiks!!! a clear head!!!! too much trouble!!! hehe :-) [11:15] hoary update on main machine is progressing, but it keeps asking questions to which i don't know the answer [11:15] what are the questions [11:15] keyboard stuff [11:16] questions like "overwrite this conf file here, or keep the original?" [11:16] unless you have specific settings just overwrite [11:16] I don't know if the new file is essential for haory, or if it is essential for existing config [11:17] if you have made changes to a config file then you should keep the original or you can redo the settings === froud must go for a bit [11:17] too late. successfully did all changes. I will restart. wish me luck! === jeffsch [~jeffsch@fatwire-204-251.uniserve.ca] has left #ubuntu-doc ["gotta] === jeffsch [~jeffsch@fatwire-204-251.uniserve.ca] has joined #ubuntu-doc [11:29] auughhhh!!! not good not good not good [11:29] only screen resolution available is 800x600 === maskie_ [~maskie@196-30-108-13.uudial.uunet.co.za] has joined #ubuntu-doc === enrico [~enrico@enrico.developer.debian] has joined #ubuntu-doc === jeffsch [~jeffsch@fatwire-204-251.uniserve.ca] has left #ubuntu-doc ["gotta] === jeffsch [~jeffsch@fatwire-204-251.uniserve.ca] has joined #ubuntu-doc [11:48] whew! got it fixed. [05:22] to agree *a lot* :) [05:32] ok [05:32] there's a mispelling in the License Policy page, [05:32] or at least i thing so [05:35] ...mmm well is "sustainably" english? [05:38] sustainable is, so sustainably looks like a good adverbization of it [05:39] "adverbization" probably doesn't exist, though :) [05:39] eheh:) === ChrisH [~chaas@gw.workaround.org] has left #ubuntu-doc [] [06:15] enrico: abelli: there is no word "sustainably" in the English dictionary. However it is possible to use it as a term and may be used in colloquial speach. [07:19] froud: what about "tipically"? [07:20] aint it typically? [07:29] ...another thing. i dont know if this is your duty or not.. [07:29] but in some pages only "3 components" are listed..
