CygnusX1Hello.  I am trying to install kubuntu 5.04 on an Asus A7N8X-DEL (nforce2/sil3112SATA).  My iso checksum is good, CD file checksum is good.  Install fails trying to mount CD-ROM for packages. In debug I see: Missing module 'ide-mod' ide-probe-mod ide-detect and ide-floppy.03:14
=== Nomad^ [nomad@84.238.26.124] has joined #kubuntu-devel
CygnusX1I have used three different optical drives.03:14
CygnusX1I just manually mounted the CD from within installer and the check cdrom integ option is running well.  However, install will not go forward like this.03:15

CygnusX1Oh...there we go.  I forgot to read the part in the manual that said to break out into a virtual terminal, mount the CD-ROM, Check integrity, THEN the install works.  Thank you guys anyway!03:32

dannyaRiddell: to standardise them...06:20
Riddelldannya: names can't be changed06:20
dannyaRiddell: why is that?06:20
Riddelldannya: because they're part of the API so need to be fixed until KDE 406:21
dannyaRiddell: there is naming clashes...06:21
Riddelldannya: how do you mean?06:22

Riddellhmm, nasty06:22
dannyayou see it?06:22

dannyaI propose that, in filesys, all the 3 overlay images (link, lock and zip) are renamed *_overlay06:23

AMIGrAvewhat do you think if we communicate to all developpers of linux apps to use ~/.etc/ folder to write the configuration files instead of ~/  ? The goal would be that if the folder ~/.etc/ does exists it is used, if not ~/ is used. So let's say that in some years linux users will have a clean home folder ?? Am I utopist / ridiculous / funny  ?08:14
Kamion~/.etc/ just makes us gratuitously incompatible with the rest of Unix for no sufficiently good reason. lots of people share home directories between Linux and other Unix systems08:18
Kamionif you want a clean home folder, don't look at dotfiles08:18
AMIGrAveKamion: if a user do not create the ~/.etc/ folder it is not used, so you would have the choice08:20
Kamionso more complicated code in every application. yay.08:20
AMIGrAveKamion: and I hate hiding dot files. I don't like the idea of having files in folders. But having all these dot files in my home makes me crazy too08:21
Kamionchill :)08:21
Kamionand something that assumes nothing will ever automatically create ~/.etc/ is wishful thinking; some day some broken application would, and then suddenly your configuration files would go insane08:22
Kamionor some application would *only* accept ~/.etc/ and you'd have no choice08:23
AMIGrAveno, the goal it that progressively applications checks if the ~/.etc/ folder exists. The goal is not that application use only ~/.etc/ 08:26
AMIGrAvefor people who does not create the ~/.etc/ folder it won't change anything08:26
AMIGrAvefor people who create it, they will have a mix between config files in ~/ and in  ~/.etc/ until all applications support this feature, then when the time will come, they'll have all config in ~/.etc/08:27
Kamiongoals are nice, but you're assuming that a huge range of disparate programmers with no overriding authority will respect some goal you lay out08:27
Kamionthey won't08:27
Kamions/some goal/some policy/08:27
AMIGrAvewho won't ?08:27
AMIGrAvesorry didn't read prevoious message08:28
Kamionit just doesn't work08:28
Kamionpeople suggest this about once a month, btw08:29
AMIGrAvewell if an effort is made at system level, any goal can be reached. If a standard function or watherver is defined for using config files, this function could be hooked for using another folder than the default one08:29
Kamionin various places08:29
AMIGrAveKamion: oh ! so I'm not the only one to be annoyed by all these dot files in home ;-)08:30
KamionI'm afraid that's hopelessly wishful thinking, sorry. Since that function would not be portable to other Unix systems, you'll never get everyone to use it.08:30
KamionI'd probably go so far as to say you'd only get a very few people to use it (#ifdefs are annoying)08:30
amuAMIGrAve: the better solution is kioskmode, i'm not happy atm how it's implemteted atm  08:33
AMIGrAveKamion: mhh yeah right08:37
