penguinboy | what about hexadecimal | 03:08 |
kalenedrael | i should hope that most of us use kubuntu, considering what channel it is | 03:08 |
nmorse | I use Debian sometimes | 03:08 |
nmorse | Hex is just double-word binary | 03:08 |
penguinboy | sixteen bit | 03:08 |
nmorse | Take an A+ class sometimes | 03:08 |
nmorse | Yeah, double-word binary | 03:08 |

nmorse | Good question | 03:09 |
nmorse | To /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions of course | 03:09 |

kalenedrael | ls /usr/share/xsessions returns kde.desktop | 03:11 |
nmorse | Mostly due to being debian based, but upgraded often | 03:11 |
kalenedrael | i can't find the enlightenment.desktop or xfce.desktop | 03:12 |
nmorse | Hmm | 03:12 |
nmorse | I have both enlightenment and xfce4 in my /usr/share/xsessions | 03:12 |

Bachus9000 | Well, I'm trying to get various acpi related things working on my laptop (Presario 2199US). The laptop has a "fn" key which does a couple things. 1) you can hold it down and use the right side of the keyboard as a number pad and 2) fn+f1 and fn+f2 dims and brightens the screen. Use 1 works fine but use 2 does not. I find this weird as this has worked without trouble in several distributions I've tried recently including Debian. : | 06:57 |
Bachus9000 | ntu, but the response time is antagonizingly slow in those cases. | 06:57 |

LuNaTiK^GuY | if i want it in linux...there are many more | 07:37 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | Kate, Vim etc etc | 07:37 |
_sbcl3 | does anyone know if kynaptic keeps an install log? | 07:37 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | but....why should those names be used? | 07:37 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | why not make it simple? | 07:37 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: hehe, that is something u will have to take up with Riddel :) he decides the basic configuration of the system | 07:38 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | a touch here and there....and it will all fare better | 07:38 |
ilba7r | lunatik lol in window you have wordpad and notepad and if you did some work you will find that wordpad is much better but other wise having a variety is better do not you think so | 07:38 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | lol its not about kubuntu alone...its about every distro.... | 07:38 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | variety....is good....but there is tooo much!! | 07:39 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: but essentially, I have made the same specific suggestion ti Riddell ... about Kate/Kedit/Kwrite ie | 07:39 |
insanekane | ti = to | 07:39 |
Riddell | hmm? | 07:39 |
ilba7r | you can pick up what you are familiar with lunatik | 07:40 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | hi Riddell :) lol | 07:40 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: the point I am trying to make is something different: if Kubuntu has to go anywhere, people like *you* need to be involved ... | 07:40 |
ilba7r | every one is a accostemed to a program having more variaty is much better | 07:40 |
Riddell | insanekane: you're trying to involve someone with a nickname LuNaTiK^GuY? :) | 07:40 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: and by "you" i dont mean people with specific qualities ... but *you* as an individual | 07:41 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | i cant be that involved...i dont know how to build a distro etc....but i can give u suggestions...for newbies..by a newbie :) | 07:41 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | having variety is better | 07:41 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | but there are different ways to present variety | 07:41 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: no ... suggestions are good, but you need to go all the way ... and spending 2 hours a week learning how to improve kubuntu will *not* be an exercise in theory but can provide practical results ... why dont u try it ? | 07:42 |
insanekane | Riddell: :) | 07:42 |
ilba7r | anyone know why while running ubuntu i run up into a problem that the pc is running like crazy (though am not openning too many programs) and the notebook just reboots? | 07:42 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | i am willing to keep on using kubuntu yes! | 07:42 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | for example...KDE and Gnome are totally 100% intuitive | 07:43 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | any windows user can get up and running with them | 07:43 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | even for the first time | 07:43 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | so thats perfect | 07:43 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: now, I am not a kubuntu developer, not associated with kubuntu developers etc, so my views are nothing official :) | 07:43 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | but why should a media player be named Amarok? | 07:44 |
ilba7r | insane and lunatik lol your nick make me feel i am in mental house :) | 07:44 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | and not something like "Media Player" | 07:44 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: thats it ! you have understood a core concept :) ... KDE is perfect ... but not Kubuntu's implementation of an integrated, easily learnable desktop OS | 07:44 |
ijuz_ | what's a "Media Player"? | 07:44 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | or "Linux Media Player" | 07:44 |

LuNaTiK^GuY | whats the problem with making it more intuitive first time! | 07:45 |

LuNaTiK^GuY | loool | 07:46 |
Riddell | Heart_: kde-config --prefix | 07:46 |
Riddell | Heart_: it is /usr | 07:46 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: and config files are basically, name=value pairs .. something anyone can do | 07:46 |
insanekane | LuNaTiK^GuY: and the whole process can be learned in under half an hour | 07:46 |
ijuz_ | LuNaTiK^GuY: because the developers wanted to name it Amarok, it's so simple | 07:46 |
Heart_ | Riddell: thx | 07:46 |
LuNaTiK^GuY | but Amarok sounds like Venusian to a newbie....it makes him think that Linux in general is for experts....just coz of a dreaded name!! its all psychological!! | 07:47 |

randabis | insanekane: it's meant to give you a base system where you can choose to add things individually to it | 09:07 |

bobbyd | I have a digital camera that works with digikam in gentoo, but under ubuntu it neither works with the camera io slave or digikam | 09:32 |
=== bisley_ [~bisley@85.57.3.222] has joined #kubuntu
bobbyd | I suspect the camera ioslave is somehow grabbing the device so digikam can't use it | 09:33 |
gideon | USB? so in nautilus you don't see anything within 30 seconds in; media:/// | 09:33 |
bobbyd | nautilus? you mean conqueror? | 09:33 |
bobbyd | s/c/k | 09:33 |
gideon | sorry :x my baddy (you said ubuntu :D) | 09:34 |
bobbyd | doh | 09:34 |
bobbyd | the camera icon pops up, but the window is empty | 09:34 |
bobbyd | do I just wait? it doesn't look like anythig is happening | 09:34 |
Heart | azureus isn't in a repos. :(? | 09:35 |
gideon | could do "lsusb" in konsole to look if anything happened | 09:35 |
bobbyd | yeah it's a kodak USB camera | 09:35 |
insanekane | Heart: try bittorrent-bittornado | 09:35 |
gideon | still should be visible withing a few seconds under media:/ | 09:35 |
Heart | insanekane: is this console-only or with a gui? | 09:35 |
insanekane | Heart: it has *a* gui ... | 09:36 |
insanekane | Heart: and usually, when u download a torrent in konqeror, it will be opened in bittornado | 09:36 |
bobbyd | gideon: it shows with lsusb and the camera icon shows in media:/// | 09:36 |
bobbyd | gideon: but there are no pictures there :( | 09:37 |
insanekane | Heart: but, it probably isnt the kind of gui which u probably expect as in azereus | 09:37 |
gideon | so, the whole cam is plugged into the system, you've got a SD card and the camera's internal memory. That means you should see 2 devices | 09:37 |
gideon | try | 09:37 |
gideon | "mount" and see if they come up | 09:38 |
gideon | if you don't see anything, try "fdisk -l", you should see a few "sdX#" devices (like "sda1" or "sdb1") | 09:38 |
=== TranbeR`Mange is now known as TranbeR
gideon | if no luck yet, unplug the cam, modprobe usb-storage, replug the cam, and retry the whole list | 09:39 |
bobbyd | gideon: as I said, it works under digikam under gentoo. I'm happy with that, so I suppose I just want to stop KDE fiddling with it :) | 09:39 |

bobbyd | I don't thik it's a problem with support, I think I just need to let digikam see it again | 09:40 |
GnuKemist | Hi... I just installed Kubuntu on my thinkpad X40 and I noticed Konqueror to be painfully slow... I haven't used KDE before, so... is Konqueror really slow or is there something else? | 09:41 |
insanekane | hmm ... actually, kde 3.4 is faster for me than older versions | 09:41 |
insanekane | anyway ... ciao all .. enjoy kubuntu !! | 09:42 |
GnuKemist | hummm | 09:42 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: what have you used in the past? | 09:42 |
GnuKemist | it is so weird... and I really want to try out KDE | 09:42 |

bobbyd | what behaviour are you seeing? | 09:42 |
GnuKemist | bobbyd... mostly Gnome or OpenBox with Firefox | 09:43 |
GnuKemist | bobbyd it is painfully slow | 09:43 |
bobbyd | konqueror shouldn't be any slower than nautilus(sp?) | 09:43 |
gideon | you mean like, leave it alone? | 09:43 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: what do you actually mean by that | 09:43 |
bobbyd | gideon: yes | 09:43 |
bobbyd | gideon: do I need to fiddle with udev to make that happen? | 09:44 |
GnuKemist | I mean, the pages load extremelly slow | 09:44 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: you mean web pages? you're not being very descriptive :) | 09:44 |
gideon | :S ... never had that issue before. Don't know how you could turn that down | 09:44 |
GnuKemist | bobbyd... sorry... I forget you can use Koqueror for more than browsing the web | 09:45 |
GnuKemist | bobbyd... yes, I meant web pages | 09:45 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: have you tried another browser? maybe you have a dns resolution problem | 09:46 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: what exactly happens? do you see very high cpu usage? | 09:46 |
GnuKemist | possible | 09:46 |
GnuKemist | but it should be ok... | 09:46 |
bobbyd | does it just sit there for a while then load all at once | 09:46 |
GnuKemist | I'm using it at home | 09:46 |
GnuKemist | bobbyd... something like that | 09:46 |
bobbyd | describe what happens when you load a page. if you don't do that clearly, I can't really help | 09:47 |
GnuKemist | it is true that kwifi(something) doesn't seem to recognize my AP and I often have to iwconfig it | 09:47 |
bobbyd | and also, run top in a konsole and change the delay to something like 0.1 and see if the cpu usage is very high when you load a page | 09:48 |
=== benus [~benus@p549F499F.dip.t-dialin.net] has joined #kubuntu
GnuKemist | bobbyd... don't have the laptop on me atm... but I guess you described it really well when you said that it takes a while and then loads it in one slow move | 09:48 |
bobbyd | if it's not, then something else is delaying the loading of pages | 09:48 |
bobbyd | GnuKemist: that sounds like a network problem | 09:48 |
GnuKemist | will have to check then... when I get home... | 09:48 |
bobbyd | I would do the above, and also try something like 'links' to see if you get the same problem | 09:48 |
GnuKemist | that is a good idea... | 09:49 |
bobbyd | you could also try pinging some sites and see how long they take to resolve | 09:49 |
GnuKemist | like I said, I installed it last night and haven't really spent too much time with it | 09:49 |
bobbyd | ok, no problem, if you get more info, come back :) | 09:50 |
GnuKemist | I had Ubuntu running before but I knew where/how to do things | 09:50 |
GnuKemist | will do | 09:50 |
GnuKemist | thanx a million | 09:50 |
bobbyd | no problemo | 09:50 |

foodcoman | Where is all the wallpaper at in KDE/Kubuntu? | 09:58 |
foodcoman | If you snag new ones, do you put them with those, or just point to ones in your home dir? | 09:58 |
philipacamaniac | put them in your home directory | 09:59 |
philipacamaniac | probably best in ~/.kde/share/wallpapers, or just wherever you put pictures | 09:59 |
foodcoman | Thanks philip! Makes sense because most would probably back their home dir and not the whole distro. | 10:00 |
philipacamaniac | yes, and upgrades might write over the /usr/share/wallpaper directory | 10:01 |
foodcoman | Great advise. Thanks. | 10:01 |
philipacamaniac | no prob | 10:01 |

nmorse | Too bad I'm broke, and I'll be attending college in a couple of months, so no job for me | 10:08 |
foodcoman | Does Linux work well with new SLI video cards also? | 10:12 |
foodcoman | That would be a smokin combo. | 10:12 |
ijuz_ | you need at least the binary only drivers from nvidia, they are either suporting it or will support soon | 10:14 |
bobbyd | foodcoman: Nvidia cards should work | 10:14 |
bobbyd | foodcoman: check the nvidia driver page | 10:14 |
foodcoman | bobbyd: I have an older one. | 10:14 |
bobbyd | hmmmmm | 10:15 |
bobbyd | digikam works when I'm root | 10:15 |
foodcoman | bobbyd: It works. I am curious how close to Bleading edge they are? | 10:15 |
ijuz_ | but anyway, the only good use would be to connect more than 2 displays | 10:15 |
bobbyd | I read something on a debian forum about being in the camera group, but there doesn't seem to be a camera group in kubuntu | 10:15 |
bobbyd | foodcoman: the linux and win drivers are supposed to be the same for nvidia | 10:16 |
foodcoman | ijuz_: hahahah, I can barely handle one. | 10:16 |
bobbyd | foodcoman: so they should contain allthe same features | 10:16 |
