nmorseI was going to make my own distro, but I like this one03:11
liz4rdlol03:11
kalenedraells /usr/share/xsessions returns kde.desktop03:11
nmorseMostly due to being debian based, but upgraded often03:11
kalenedraeli can't find the enlightenment.desktop or xfce.desktop03:12
nmorseHmm03:12
nmorseI have both enlightenment and xfce4 in my /usr/share/xsessions03:12
nmorseMaybe it was copy from /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions to /usr/share/xsessions03:12
liz4rdbrb everyone hair cut03:12

nmorsemythtv*03:16
kalenedraelwhat's that?03:18
nmorseNow if I can figure out how to make apt and dpkg use distcc for building packages, I'll be set03:18
nmorseMythtv is a DVR program, like TiVo03:19
nmorseI'm installing it so I can use my Video Capture card to record my Halo 2 sessions and of course store TV shows, skip ads, etc03:19

kalenedraeli wonder how i lived without sudo and apt-get03:24
nmorseWhat other distros did you use?03:24
nmorseThough life without them is hard to imagine these days03:24
kalenedraelfc3 and rh803:24
nmorseI tried going back once, to Gentoo actually03:24
nmorseWhen I got back here, I realized how much I had missed apt03:24
kalenedraelheh03:24
kalenedraelyeah, apt is great03:25
nmorseRed Hat 8 was crap though03:25
nmorseFedora Core 3 was one of their worst releases too, so I hear03:25
nmorseSo welcome to the actual desktop linux community03:25
nmorseHere's hoping Ubuntu doesn't become just a fad distro, here today, much less popular tommorrow03:25
kalenedraelthanks03:25
kalenedraelyeah...03:26
kalenedraelubuntu is a very well-designed distro03:26
monchyit won't be, but that all depends on breezy03:26
kalenedraeli originally thought "wtf, it's only one CD?"03:26
kalenedraeland wondered how all the packages can fit on that03:26
nmorseThey can't is the only answer03:27
nmorseDebian Sarge took 1403:27
kalenedraelwell, they don't, but you only download the packages you need later, which is very nice03:27
kalenedraelyeah, you have a functional desktop complete with important programs, then you use apt to get more stuff03:27
nmorseUniverse is your friend03:27
kalenedraelmultiverse is my friend03:28
nmorseI attempted to join the Linux room on Yahoo03:28
nmorseThen someone asked how to remotely login to the localhost from the localhost03:28
nmorseAnd I had to leave to preserve my sanity03:28
nmorseRemotely and localhost just don't mix03:29

insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: go to the kernel line, and press 'e' again ... and at the end type init=3 ... press enter05:17
insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: followed by 'b' ... this should take u into single-user mode in console and allow you to reconfigure the xserver05:18
insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: to reconfigure the X Server, do this: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg05:18

insanekanesure, i didnt think so since you mentioned other distros :)07:34
LuNaTiK^GuYyes its a general thing07:34
insanekaneyes, it is indicative of a general feeling that linux newbies have07:34
insanekanethe point is, the tools exist ... from gui and admin tools and what not ... atleast within kubuntu, (but also all other distros), now there is an integrative approach07:35
insanekaneyou could say a horizontal distro as opposed to vertical07:35
LuNaTiK^GuYbut....this feeling of "being lost" comes from even tiny stuff07:36
LuNaTiK^GuYfor example07:36

ilba7rlunatik lol in window you have wordpad and notepad and if you did some work you will find that wordpad is much better but other wise having a variety is better do not you think so07:38

LuNaTiK^GuYvariety....is good....but there is tooo much!!07:39

insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: the point I am trying to make is something different: if Kubuntu has to go anywhere, people like *you* need to be involved ... 07:40

Riddellinsanekane: you're trying to involve someone with a nickname LuNaTiK^GuY? :)07:40
insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: and by "you" i dont mean people with specific qualities ... but *you* as an individual07:41
LuNaTiK^GuYi cant be that involved...i dont know how to build a distro etc....but i can give u suggestions...for newbies..by a newbie :)07:41
LuNaTiK^GuYhaving variety is better07:41
LuNaTiK^GuYbut there are different ways to present variety07:41
insanekaneLuNaTiK^GuY: no ... suggestions are good, but you need to go all the way ... and spending 2 hours a week learning how to improve kubuntu will *not* be an exercise in theory but can provide practical results ... why dont u try it ?07:42

foodcomanGreat advise.  Thanks.10:01
philipacamaniacno prob10:01
foodcomanRead an article on the Dual Core Athlon's.  Pretty hot stuff!10:03
foodcomanWish I could afford to build a new machine!10:03

nmorseIt would be great to build a new machine with Athlon64's10:07
nmorseToo bad I'm broke, and I'll be attending college in a couple of months, so no job for me10:08
foodcomanDoes Linux work well with new SLI video cards also?10:12
foodcomanThat would be a smokin combo.10:12
ijuz_you need at least the binary only drivers from nvidia, they are either suporting it or will support soon10:14
bobbydfoodcoman: Nvidia cards should work10:14
bobbydfoodcoman: check the nvidia driver page10:14
foodcomanbobbyd: I have an older one.10:14
bobbydhmmmmm10:15
bobbyddigikam works when I'm root10:15
foodcomanbobbyd: It works.  I am curious how close to Bleading edge they are?10:15
ijuz_but anyway, the only good use would be to connect more than 2 displays10:15
bobbydI read something on a debian forum about being in the camera group, but there doesn't seem to be a camera group in kubuntu10:15
bobbydfoodcoman: the linux and win drivers are supposed to be the same for nvidia10:16
foodcomanijuz_: hahahah, I can barely handle one.10:16
bobbydfoodcoman: so they should contain allthe same features10:16
bobbydfoodcoman: The linux drivers sometimes have OGL support that isn't even in the win32 ones10:16
=== airox [~airox@airox.user] has joined #kubuntu
ijuz_foodcoman: actually i thought about this, displays are so cheap this days, but i have stuff over my desk, so i can't have a 2*2 setup10:16
bobbydfoodcoman: but I haven't had a lot of time to check them out lately as I've been working under windows at work10:17
airoxAnybody who knows a way to get Kcontact (or a applet) to get into the taskbar and notify me about new emails ?10:17
foodcomanijuz_: buy a leaf blower and clean the desk for a second display!10:17
foodcoman=)10:17
bobbydijuz_: we all have dual monitor setups at work, it's really cool :)10:17
foodcomanbobbyd: Same here, but run a gratuitous Kubuntu box at work.  Mainly Kubuntu for home.10:17
ijuz_i have dual monitor, but more would be nice10:17
Heartwhen i try to install amule aptitude wants to delete several packages... (kubuntu-desktop, konversation, kdenetwork and so on) :(10:18
bobbydfoodcoman: I have no linux desktop at work at the moment10:18
foodcomanbobbyd: =( SSH and tunnel VNC session to home.10:19
bobbydfoodcoman: we have linux servers, and I've just snagged a linux machine for some tasks10:19
