thingyXaqueth: Same time everyday? Could be something external to the system? I'm thinking of something that might cause the box to freeze, e.g. a power surge12:02
gdhthere are certainly no cron jobs happening at only midnight by default12:03
dwmurphyi've heard of an air-horn going off the same time everyday that use to screw up hard drives... (long time ago...)12:03
Xaquethhmm, that thought didn't cross my mind, I automatically assumed its software problem12:03
McScruffif its the same time it i would think power12:04
Xaquethif its hardware issue, I reckon I can test that with using different distro for tomorrow, like Knoppix to find out12:04

honthingy: /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc ?12:25
thingyhon: to do that, you need to make a backup of "/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc", then edit the file, looking for the line, "Theme=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu". Just comment that line, by putting a # in front of it.12:25

tuerteni use kynaptic to get the packages but it doesn't auto install and display on the gui menu12:33

thingyyes12:38
tuertenit doesn't show up in my kynaptic, only bittorrent does12:39
thingyoh12:39
thingyin that case try this first, and then check if you have to enable support for multiverse in your sources.list12:40
tuertenmmm sorry i don't know how12:40
thingytry, "apt-get install bittorrent-gui" in an xterm or on the console as root12:40
thingyif that says cannot find the package then it means you need to add multiverse(or maybe universe) into your sources.list12:41
tuertenPackage bittorrent-gui is not available, but is referred to by another package.12:42
tuertenThis may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or12:42

gdhmm?02:16
nikkiagdh, trying to track down a song from the radio02:16
gdh:) how does it go? :)02:17
nikkiaoh, i know the title02:17
gdhI'm probably the worst person to ask. I don't listen to music radio and I am completely out of touch with popular culture02:17
nikkiaand i know who sang it, originally, but i'm about 98% sure that the version played was not the original02:17
nikkiagdh, this is about as far from 'popular culture' as it gets :P02:18
nikkiagdh, it was alice cooper's radio show, playing 'Venus in Furs'02:18
gdhdon't virgin have an online playlist?02:18
nikkiabut the pronounciation on the 'severin, severin' bit did not match lou reed's02:18
nikkiagdh, yes, but it only works for native shows02:18
nikkiaalice cooper is syndicated from the US, and thus doesn't get on the 'playlist'02:18
gdhahh he does a big syndicated thing?02:18
gdhthere isn't some geeky messageboard you could ask?02:19
nikkiai've only tracked down 2 covers of Venus in Furs, one by some weird french band, and one by Smashing Pumpkins, neither are 'almost identical to the original, except for the pronounciation of severin'02:19
nikkiawhich leads me to wonder if either 1) i'm imagining the pronounciation difference, 2) it was a later 'lou reed' cover of his own song02:20
nikkia(it also didn't sound like 1967 production quality :)02:20
=== sproingie_ [foobar@64-121-15-14.c3-0.sfrn-ubr8.sfrn.ca.cable.rcn.com] has joined #kubuntu
nikkiagdh, now, the odd thing is.... you remember when dunlop used Venus in Furs for an ad? i'm pretty sure their version was the same one alice played, but every source says it was the original02:21
gdhI never really 'got' Lou Reed... I don't understand all the 'genius' of his work02:21
gdhMaybe he just falls into the same category of 'poets' as Dylan 02:22
nikkiawho am i kidding, everyone remembers THAT ad :P02:22
gdhyes I remember that ad. very odd.02:22
gdhand you're right, not exactly 'Daytime Light Hits FM' material02:22
nikkiayeah...02:23
gdhJazz FM in the northwest is now 'Smooth FM', and I have to take my hat off to them ... they've built a winner of a business model... 02:23
gdhplay vacuous, soul-less filler all day , every day.. and put adverts every 10 minutes02:24
gdhso the music has nothing at all to latch onto... /perfect/ for playing in offices so you don't get distracted from your day job02:24

nikkiabut i think he'd gone on a pee break at that point tonight02:26
nikkiait was an unusally long segment of music :P02:27
gdh:) an endearing mental image...02:27
nikkiagdh, heh02:27
nikkiagdh, if you totally want to break your mind, try imaging him going for 'the other', complete with makeup on et al02:28
nikkiaimagining, even02:28
nikkiai have to laugh tho, whenever he comments on axl rose's 'rock n roll lifestyle'02:29
gdhhave never listened to his show, but I do have a strong respect for the guy02:30
gdhif even only from the stupid segment he did in Wayne's World... :)02:30
nikkiagdh, oh, me too02:30
nikkiagdh, he's about the most 'real' of the glam crowd, from what i've seen02:31
nikkiaheh... nice wording from his 'upcoming show info' page02:31
nikkia'A triple shot of Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin - to celeberate the 37th anniversary of the breakup of the yardbirds'02:32
gdha momentous occasion, for sure :)02:32
nikkiawell, in fairness, Led Zep might not have happened if it hadn't02:32
gdhI can't say my life would be much different were that the case :|02:34
nikkianot a LZ fan ?02:34
gdhCouldn't name a single track, tbh.02:34
gdhYes, honestly.02:35
nikkiai 'heard' the new robert plant album today.... it's... interesting... in a kind of 'madonna releases ray of light' kind of way02:35
gdhI liked ray of light a lot as a single, but the rest of that album left me rather cold.02:35
nikkia(actually, it parallels that album very closely...)02:36
gdhif you do electronica, you need to get the right feel else it ends up sounding too manufactured02:36
nikkiain that 'rays of sunshine' are a key theme in the album, and there's a lot of semi-dance/techno/electronica stuff mixed in that you woldn't expect and makes you go 'wtf? this is robert plant??'02:36
gdhLike 'Oh shit I was supposed to have an album finished 2 months ago... let's bang out something in Cubase .. ' ;)02:37
nikkiaheh02:37
nikkiaactually, this is one of those albums that on first listen you go 'wtf?' then you think 'i'd better listen to that again....'02:37
nikkiaand in 10 years time i'll probably think 'that was the best robert plant album, evah!'02:37

ztonzyhmm04:54
ztonzyanyone tried Gmail with Konqueror? and why doesn't all functions work with it ?04:55
ztonzyKonqueror feels hell a lot faster to browse with than Firefox04:56
Peakerand its much nicer to be able to access all the IO support of KDE and all the various parts :)04:56
Peakerthe KDE File browser is a bit lame though (not that the Firefox one is even usable, but compared to explorer.exe)04:57
ztonzyah yes04:57
nikkiapeaker, you mean the open/save dialogs?04:57
Peakernikkia: Nah, that one is better than Windows' (although it does not let you do anything in it), I mean the browser itself04:58
=== gdh [~gdh@80-192-144-33.cable.ubr04.pres.blueyonder.co.uk] has joined #kubuntu
nikkiapeaker, hmmm, the only complaint i have about konqueror as a file browser, is the terrible way selection and dragging files works04:59
Peakernikkia: When you try to shift+select then the first one you go through is left unselected, you try to select it and everything goes funky.. If you try to just mark a "square" around some files, then its all confused04:59
nikkiapeaker, yeah, that :P04:59
Peakeryes, selection is horrible04:59
nikkiapeaker, the drag to copy/move is horrible too04:59
Peakersomething that's wrong with _all_ file browsers is that they make you go through the pain of re-finding paths in every file browser you open, instead of showing a history of directories in an accessible way04:59
Peakerso.. how do I dist-upgrade into kubuntu from Debian unstable?05:00
nikkiapeaker, probably easier to just install from scratch, tbh05:00
McScruffhas anyone here compiled cvs of amsn?05:01
Peakernikkia: That's silly, losing all my files and such :P05:01
nikkiapeaker, well, you can try dist-upgrade'ing, but given that there are some fairly major differences, i wouldn't rely on it working05:02
nikkiaand maybe when it breaks, you'll think about keeping /home on a seperate partition next time :P05:02
Peakerthat would be a silly waste of space05:04
gdhKeeping system seperate from data is silly?05:06
Peakerdoing that while wasting space is05:07
gdhdisk is cheap <shrug>05:07
Peakerproper separation in software instead of hardware is cheaper05:07
Peakerseparation such as different directories is fine05:08

nikkiakozz, ok, but its not an easy one.... if i let dhcp assign eth0's IP address, eth0 gets assigned a IPv6 link-local address, but I can't use dhcp on my gateway machine, and if I define eth0 with a static address, then no link local address gets assigned, using 'up' to add a rule to add a static link local address to eth0 doesn't work, and it fails to bring up eth0 completely...10:37

buzi havent found the mini itx to be particularly reliabl11:38
buze11:39
nmorseBut they're cheap11:39
nmorseand small and quiet11:39
buzthe passive ones are quiet11:39
opibuz: I have Pegasos2 G4/100011:39
buzthe non passive ones are whiny suckers11:39
opibuz: it's running all day and night as my small server11:39
buzis that like generic  ppc?11:39
nmorseBah, I've had it with PPC11:40
opiIt's a PowerPC board with OpenFirmware11:40
buzonly ppc i'd touch is Power511:40
buzand thats neither small nor silent nor cheap11:40
nmorsePegasos isn't cheap11:41
buzthen again, my whole family uses macs11:42
opiit's $499 now11:42
buzcan get a mac mini for that11:42
buzfaster too11:42
nmorseMac Mini's are nice11:42
opiApple hardware is closed11:42
buzruns linux easily11:42
nmorseThere's one sitting on another desk in the other room11:42
nmorseAlong with 2 iMacs11:42
nmorseJust two PC's and laptop other than that11:42
buzi just dont like osx too much11:42
nmorseMy server just died and the old one sounds like a jet engine (and makes a good AC)11:42
buzi suppose the mini could make a fileserver together with some bigass usb drives11:43
buzit's pretty quiet too11:43
buzsilent it is not, but quiet11:43
nmorseThe Mac Mini would probably be a great server if you could get the thing apart without breaking all the little clips11:44
valantinereuben  thank you for  help , helho friends from england , bye from italy11:44
buzas i say, usb drives11:44
nmorseToo much work and no capability for RAID come to think of it11:44
buzthen there are also cheap NAS boxes these days11:45
buzmac can do software raid IIRC11:45
nmorseNot inside the Mini you can't11:45
buzinside, not.11:45
buzexternally, probably11:45
nmorseGood luck with external RAID (god, that sounds like a real pain)11:46
nmorseAnd the latency would be horrible for a fileserver11:46
buzmhh usb2 aint so bad11:47
buzfaster than the 100mbit in the mini for sure11:47
buzbut i'd only do it if you have an otherwise unused mini laying around11:47
buzelse i'd go for sempron board or perhaps mini itx11:47
buzbut beware, mini itx is FUCKING slow11:47
buzthe 1ghz c3 can't even decode dvd by itself11:49

nmorseYeah, I know how slow mini itx from VIA can be11:53
nmorseBut nothing I'm doing is particularly CPU limited11:53
nmorseThough a sempron board is something I should look at11:54
opiwow11:54
