Situation is: I have a 300GB SATA HDD, and an 80GB IDE HDD. IDE = for kubuntu, SATA = for windows. When I boot computer, default HDD is IDE so that kubuntu can load the thing that asks me what OS to run, windows or kubuntu. I've just plugged everything in, and turned c08:58

vessuviusA list of the improvements is here, freemanen: http://www.ubuntu.com/newsitems/5.10preview09:55
vessuviusIs there any difference between installing ubuntu and then installing and configuring kde than installing kubuntu?09:57
orace|a little09:57
vessuviuswhat would that be?09:57
sedekikubuntu uses kdm instead of gdm for example.09:57
orace|yeah09:57
orace|that09:57
sedekibut there's a package you can apt-get which installs the entire kubuntu system.09:58
sedekivessuvius, if it's important, i can look it up for you09:59
JuerdIt's kubuntu-desktop09:59
sedekiyeah. :)09:59
JuerdAnd the standard Gnome desktop is ubuntu-desktop09:59
Juerdapt-cache show ubuntu-desktop if you want to find out what to remove to get rid of it (removing the package doesn't help, because it's a meta package)09:59
thoreauputickubuntu-desktop also gives you the choice between kdm and gdm09:59
Juerdthoreauputic: So does ubuntu-desktop10:00
Juerdthoreauputic: Or actually, so do *dm10:00
vessuviusI'm planning on kubuntu, I just wondered how much of a difference, if any, it was between just installing ubuntu and then kde10:00
vessuviuscuriousity10:00
Juerdvessuvius: Well, kubuntu is more than just kde10:00
thoreauputicJuerd: yes, if you install ubuntu-desktop from kubuntu10:00
Juerdvessuvius: It's kde, some artwork, some settings, and some programs, all bundled together10:01
sedekivessuvius, some minor differances10:01
Juerdvessuvius: Just like ubuntu isn't just gnome10:01
vessuviusok.. so like kate or some stuff like that comes along with it10:01
Juerdvessuvius: Well, kate is part of kde10:01
vessuviusya... its a kde based desktop with some of the tools that generally go along with the desktop10:01
Juerdvessuvius: My advice is to use kubuntu, not plain kde on ubuntu10:01
vessuviusok Juerd. thanx10:02

waseemlike now its trying to connect to "salahinet"10:39
waseemand i want it to connect to "wally"10:39
sedekiiwconfig wlan0 essid wally10:39
waseemi use eth1 though10:39
waseemso should it be wlan1?10:39
sedekino its commonly wlan0.10:39
sedekiif eth1 is your wireless, then use eth1.10:40
waseemok 10:40
sedekiyou can remap those names.10:40
jrattner1Are there any "Weather Bug" type things for the KDE panel10:41
jrattner1so i know what the temperature is10:41
waseemsedeki: there is no such device for either wlan0 or wlan110:41
Lichtejrattner1: there is a kweather applet10:41
jrattner1Lichte, do i have to download that or does it ship with kubunut10:41
jrattner1kubuntu10:41
Lichtejrattner1: it ships with KDE10:42
sedekiwaseem as I said. if eth1 is your wireless, then use eth1: iwconfig eth1 essid wally10:42
jrattner1Lichte, how do i add it to panel10:42
sedekiwaseem you can show all ethernet interfaces which has wireless extensions with: iwconfig10:42
sedekisimple.10:42
Lichtejrattner1: right click anywhere on your panel, then click "add applet"10:42
jrattner1ok10:42
waseemsedeki: ok it worked, should i test the internet now?10:43
sedekiwaseem first, do you have a WEP-key? second, you'll need a IP. either static or dynamic through dhcp.10:43
Flying_Eaglejrattner1, you have to do "sudo apt-get install kweather"10:44
waseemsedeki: heh i dont know what a WEP-key or how to find out my IP10:44
sedekiwell you should know if your AP is encrypted.10:45
sedekiat least.10:45
sedekiAP is short for access point.10:45
waseem...10:46
waseemim unsure10:46
sedekiwell, lets presume your AP is not encrypted and you'll request a dynamic IP.10:46
sedekidhclient eth110:47
jrattner1Flying_Eagle, how do i make kweather use fahrenheit10:47
Flying_Eaglesorry, dont know10:48
waseemsedeki: what should i look for in the output10:48
sedekiDHCP offer10:48
Lichtejrattner1: right click on the applet and click configure10:48
jrattner1Lichte, then what there is no option10:48
waseemim getting a DHCPDISCOVER 255.255.255.25510:49
waseemand then it outputs the same line with different interval numbers10:49
sedekithat's your card trying to discover a IP from "someone out there"10:49
