philipacamaniacother than prelink12:12
philipacamaniacI've got a 1.1Ghz PIII with 512MB ram, and it takes about 1:32 seconds to start Writer12:13

Blissexphilipacamaniac: I suggest a couple of things...12:15
philipacamaniacI've already disabled java and increased OOo2's memory usage12:15
philipacamaniacbut what else do you have?12:15
Blissexphilipacamaniac: one is to make sure that '/proc/sys/vm/page-cluster' is zero. This is in general a very good idea, and even better with OOo12:15
Blissexphilipacamaniac: another is to _reduce_ the memory usage.12:16
philipacamaniacoh...hmm...12:16
philipacamaniacpage-cluster is 312:16

philipacamaniachow to change?12:16
Blissexphilipacamaniac: 'echo 0 >| /proc/sys/vm/page-cluster'12:16
philipacamaniacoh duh12:17
Blissexphilipacamaniac: then use a preloader... like http://ooqstart.sourceforge.net/12:17
philipacamaniacwell that's the other problem - it12:17
philipacamaniacwhoops12:17
philipacamaniacit's a laptop and I can't have the boottime slowed either12:18
Blissexphilipacamaniac: or http://segfaultskde.berlios.de/index.html12:18
philipacamaniacI'm pushing the limits of Linux here :)12:18
Blissexphilipacamaniac: then make sure that the file system in which OOo and its libraries are freshly loaded. This defragments them.12:18
Blissexphilipacamaniac: read this for an idea of the importance: http://www.sabi.co.uk/Notes/anno05-3rd.html#05091312:19
philipacamaniacBlissex: thanks for all this12:19
Blissexphilipacamaniac: the basic problem is that OOo is a desktop environment of its own, and needs to load a lot of stuff as it starts, not just as to amount of data, but also as to how scattered things are.12:20
Blissexphilipacamaniac: thanks for the appreciation.12:20
Blissexphilipacamaniac: also, and this is not very appreciated, minimize the number of fonts available. The more fonts the more certain terrible aspects of the font manager happen.12:21
philipacamaniacthanks. regarding OOo as a DE, so, what you're saying is, kword and abiword need better MSOffice support so we can use them instead. :)12:22
philipacamaniacso far so good12:24

Hobbseedo you want help, or do you want to be booted?05:56
logikal_we're trying to help you, don't be an idiot05:56
propagandhiKiwiKibi: have you tried mount -t hpfs /dev/hdxX /mnt/directory05:56
Hobbseeif you're going to be a pain, then you wont get any help at all05:56
logikal_Do what we/they say.05:57
logikal_and we will/they will help you.05:57
Hobbseeof course, we could leave it to you to figure it out, you'll need to figure out which hdxX it's on...and then you'd be fine05:57
propagandhiKiwiKibi: i'd also suggest you consult the mount man page or http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/mount.8.html05:57
KiwiKibiso, are you saying by your refusal to say what's the syntax to mount a file system that there is no need to say it because Linux by default mounts ALL FILE SYSTEMS it supports, including HFS, JFS, EXT2, EXT3, NTFS, FAT32, NFS, XFS, and all others it supports?05:58
KiwiKibioh, and HPFS?05:58
propagandhiKiwiKibi: people need to do a little of their own ground work - but you didnt answer my question05:58
HobbseeKiwiKibi: calm down.  what we need to know is exactly where it's mounted, which is the command i gave you earlier.  After that, we can help you05:58
Hobbseei cant answer your question until you give me enough information to answer it05:59
Hobbseeand the way you give enough information to answer it is by typing, in a console, "sudo fdisk -l" without the quotes05:59
Hobbseeand then pasting it to the pastebin05:59
KiwiKibiaight . . . before I shut down WindogsXP, could you tell me in which file I'm supposed to stick the "mount" command when I want to mount a given file system?06:00
Hobbseesudo kwrite /etc/fstab06:00
Hobbseeis the command that goes into the console, and will bring up the file you want to modify06:01
Hobbseeand yes, you will need to be in linux to do it, as linux labels the drives differently to windows06:01

stupendo5well, but i386 seems to refer to all x86 processors (amd or intel). But I'm wondering what the difference is. I've heard there's also i486 & i58605:03
DocTomoeyou can optimise machine code for higher processors, but that renders that code unusable on older ones. when this one appears in package names, the code is optimized for processors newer or as new as the architecture stated.05:04

elcucocopying it to the disk...?11:04
DaSkreechDo you have the iso?11:05
DaSkreechmd5sum the ISO11:05
DaSkreechOr mount /dev/cdrom to a folder and md5sum the folder11:05
DaSkreechanything inside of /dev is a special file which describes hardware. Not the data that the hardware is transporting11:07
