kokebtw, the edubuntu installer has asked for my IP having DHCP, it's a feature?12:04
ograyup12:04
ograso you had a some 100MB big tarball with a separate release inside for the chroot12:05
ogranon upgradeable etc... all the drawbacks a monolithic chroot setup can have12:05
ograwhat we do is to actually bootstrap a chroot 12:06
ograso you use the same package base as the main system and are fully upgradeable12:06
kokebut with a tarball it can be upgradeable too12:06
ograall packages used in the chroot are original breezy pkg's with modifications of the defaults where necessary, but applying to the whole distro12:07
ograsure it could..12:07
ograbut thats how we do it currently.. and a tarball would duplicate thepackages on CD and you'd loos the ability to just wipe the chroot and build it new without the CD12:08
ograas it is now, you can just rebuild the chroot from archive.ubunut.com12:09
ogra*ubuntu12:09
kokeno, I mean the tarball would contain a fresh chroot generated at cd build time (maybe)12:09
kokeand could be regenerated12:09
kokeit's just a matter of making installation faster12:09
ograyes, but only if you have the tarball with the CD available12:10
ograits a matter of reporting ... the progressbar doesnt work as you'll have noticed12:10
ograif you can see whats going on its not that bad...12:10
kokemmm, I mean all the chroots generated in installations of same architecture should be identical12:10
ograbuilding the chroot takes exactly 9minutes12:11
ograwhich other chroots do ou mean ? there is only one for the thin clients12:11
kokeIMO the ubuntu installation is slow enough12:11
kokeI have to try the live installer12:11
ograthere is no live installer yet12:11
kokelive CD installers became popular because they cloned a disk in a few minutes12:12
ogramdz and Kamion will develop it for dapper i think12:12
kokeand ubuntu-express?12:12
kokeis dead?12:12
ograthats not even close to the spec12:12
kokeI thought they were still working on it12:12
ograthey just started to build what they found appropriate... i'm not sure if it will ever enter ubuntu12:13
ograthey ignored the spe12:13
ograc12:13
ograthere is gone a lot of money int bountys for stuff they dont use etc... but to be honest i have no clue about the current status 12:14
kokeI thought they were working and reporting to ubuntu-devel12:14
kokeand taking suggestions from there12:14
ograheh, yes 5 mails during the whole release cycle...12:14
ograprobably 10 i didnt count exactly12:14
ograbut they neither worked with the ubuntu community nor did they follow the spec 12:15
kokeand more, they are making the installer for Guadalinex, which is based on Ubuntu, so it wouldn't be logical to distance from u-d12:15
ogratell that to them12:15
ograthe packages wouldnt even go through revu ... at least the alst time i looked at them12:15
kokethe code was not very good too :)12:16
ograyes12:16
kokeI wanted to check the source and fix some things when I get some free time12:16
ograbut its mdz's call, no idea how he thinks about it12:16
ograi'm so swamped with edubuntu that i dont have the time to look deeper into such projects... edubuntu breezy was a one man show...12:17
ograbut back on topic...12:17
ograthe edubuntu powerpc CD was at 699MB at the end... there wouldnt even been space for any tarball with a chroot :)12:18
ogranot to mention that we'll support multiarch ltsp next reease so it would have to be 3 tarballs :)12:19
ograwhich would fill a whole CD on its own12:19
kokeI can't imagine a 64 bits "thin" client ;P12:20
ograi use one for tesing ;)12:21
ogra(my laptop is amd64)12:21
kokeI meant in production, just kidding anyway :)12:21
ograbut you are right12:21
ograthe main demand is ppc clients on i386 servers or i386 clients on amd64 servers ...12:22
ograand indeed the default i386 on i386 servers12:22
ograsurely amd64 as clinet is not common... but i met people using ltsp on amd64 clinents with local apps for HPC tasks...12:23
ograand a big transparent cluster as server...12:23
ograbut thats rather enterprise level edubuntu has not to care about yet12:24
kokethe cluster includes clients?12:24
kokeI have wanted to try that for a long time12:24
ograyou have a transparent mosix or beowulf cluster and attach clients to it...12:24
ograthast something i think about to automate for dapper+112:25
kokegreat!12:25
ograif you install a edubuntu ltsp it should ask if it should run standalone or join the cluster on install12:25
ograthe rest should be automated :)12:26
ograthe edubuntu instll may take long, but regarding that you dont have to edit more than one file post install, the feedback is great... 12:27
ograk12 ltsp can take you days to set up12:27
ograeven if the install might be faster :)12:28
kokeso edubuntu it's primarily focused to be installed as a terminal server?12:29
ograltsp is installed by default :)12:30
ograsee http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuInstallNotes12:30
Topslakranyone here every try to use a server 2003 DHCP server with edubuntu/ltsp12:31
Topslakri have found a few docs about it, but nothing from the edubuntu or ltsp12:31
ograwhy should we... edubuntu brings its own dedicated dhcp server12:31
Topslakrheh, cause :)12:32
ograjust make sure to have 2 NICs in the server...12:32
TopslakrI have an existing dhcp server thats working just didn't know if it had been tried12:32
TopslakrI don't have the 2 nic setup option, servers and clients aren't close and they need to share and existing network12:32
ograthe first one cna grab the IP from the 2003 server, the second serves the thin client setup12:32
ograthen yu have to tweak a lot...12:33
Topslakrhmm, some one in here told me it would be easy :) I12:33
ograrip out the dhcp server from edubuntu and adjust the 2003 server to point to the edubuntu erver12:33
kokehmm, I should have typed workstation :(12:33
TopslakrI'm willing to use a linux DHCP server, but I can't dedicated a section of my network to edubuntu12:33
kokeI ran out of battery at ~90% of creating chroot12:34
ograkoke, its not thats much stuff that gets installed along, dont worry12:34
kokeI just wanted to test it and see how was it going :)12:34
ograTopslakr, first see http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuInstallNotes and the linked docs to understand how edubuntu is set up...12:35
ograTopslakr, after that http://wiki.edubuntu.org/ThinClientHowto might have some hints howto use it with a external dhcp server... you need to rip out r deactivate the one in edubuntu indeed12:36
ograTopslakr, the default setup is for pic 1 on http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuWiring12:37
Topslakryeah, i saw that setup guide. Was very nicely done.12:38
ograthanks :)12:38
TopslakrI'm going to have to keep on digging... thx again. I'll keep moving on12:38
ograplease report back if and how you got it running... we'll add it to the docs :=12:39

dabaRTopslakr: do you have a specific package in mind?04:51
dabaRI mean, what is the package that you do not want to remove.04:51
Topslakri want to keep the ltsp and edubuntu server but i want to drop dhcp04:52
TopslakrI'm trying a work around right now04:52
dabaRthose are likely metapackages.04:53
dabaRedubuntu-server can safely be removed, most likely. What is the name of other packaeg exactly?04:56
dabaRok, Topslakr, do you understand the concept of a metapackage?04:59
dabaRif you do not know, want to know, and have a sec for me to explain, let me know.04:59
dabaRbtw, the other one is also likely a metapackage, most most likely.05:00
TopslakrI'd love to know what that means :) I'm trying an another solution at the moment but and explanation of meta-pkgs would be good05:06
dabaRwell, here goes. It is a package, taht inside it contains a list of dependencies. Really, itself, it is nothing, but a list of packages that make up ltsp-server, and edubuntu-server. Why they are used, is so that you dont have to think what packages you want, but just get that, and it gets the common ones. So, edubuntu-desktop, is a list of dependencies that make up the edubuntu-desktop. Removing any package from that list using synapti05:10
dabaRSo, if I was to remove just edubuntu-desktop, using aptitude, or synaptic, I would not lose one single functionality on my computer. I think that both of those are metapackages, because of their size, which ubotu told me.05:11
dabaR!ask the bot05:11
dabaRhey, you guys dont have ubotu.05:11
dabaRanyhow, ubotu is a bot on #ubuntu, which is where I am mostly, and there is a syntax to ask him about packages.05:11
dabaRwhat they are, what size, and where to find them(which repo/component of ubuntu)05:12
dabaRso, looking at those two packages, their size is too small for them to be really anything else than a metapackage - 36 and 88kB each, unpacked.05:13
dabaR6 and 11kB packaged.05:13
dabaRI am not 100% sure they are metapackages howwever, but your chances are such. So what I am saying is that if you remove the two packages, nothing really is lost. It is just that dhcp-server(if that is what you are removing) is part of the common edubuntu-server setup, and ltsp-server setup.05:14
dabaRanyhow, I hope you read this, so that I have not typed for nothing:)05:15
dabaRlet me know if something is unclear.05:15
Topslakrit makes05:21
Topslakrit makes good sense to me but what does the metapkg do?05:21
dabaRit has as a list of dependencies what is commonly known as the edubuntu server set, or so.05:22
dabaRget it?05:22
Topslakryeah05:23
Topslakrso have u ever run this edubuntu term server using a server 2003 DHCP server?05:24
dabaRso, removing a package that is a list of packages, changes nothing...in other words.05:24
Topslakrmakes sense dabaR, and i appreciate your time05:24
dabaROh, no doubt, I like wasting my time.05:26
dabaRon some purpose...05:26

DK1dabaR > Is there any log of the boot I can look at ?06:18
DK1dabaR > nothing about /tmp06:21
dabaRDK1: That I can not answer, so maybe someone else knows. I had errors like that that bring me back to the login screen, but, with an error dialog box first, and I would change the permissions to /tmp, and it would work. Im just a community member, though, most people that are here, when they are here, know moer, since they are developers.06:21
DK1dabaR > Thats cool, thanks for trying06:22
dabaRya, sure.06:22
YagisanDK1: Where are the errors - client or server ?06:23
dabaRYagisan: well, the client logs in, and then logs out>back to gdm again.06:23
DK1Yagisan > Sorry should have made it clear, they are occuring during the kernel load on the client.06:24
YagisanDK1: the clients show a lot of "errors" on boot, as they has a read only filesystem and expect a read-write filesystem06:25
YagisanDK1: those errors are harmless06:25
Yagisannot logging in however - seems to be the ssh key issue06:25

_tirian_Is it fairly simple to replace K12LTSP with Edubuntu?06:35
_tirian_I already have that installed at the school, but I really don't like Fedora at all (which K12LTSP is based on).06:36
ogra_tirian_, its very easy ... see http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuInstallNotes, that and the linked subpages are all you need to do06:38

ograsure06:42
_tirian_ogra, Thanks.06:44
ograif you got questions, just come back here :)06:45
BeanDipanyone around?06:45
BeanDipunder debian ltsp seemed to use my server system's user accounts not accounts created within the ltsp directory tree06:45
BeanDipI'm lostrnwhat am I doing wrong?06:45
BeanDipsorry wrong window06:45
ograbut i cant imagine a ltsp thin client environment where you create any users in the ltsp chroot btw :)06:47
BeanDipogra06:48
BeanDipunder debian with ltsp it used my server's users06:49
BeanDipnot users from the chroot06:49
ograyes, thats how ubuntu/edubuntu does it too06:49
ograand i couldnt imagine a thin client setup where it would be different06:49
BeanDiphere let me try repasting my full questionrnputty under windows acts wierd with my naim client06:50
ograwho told you you would have to create users in the chroot ? 06:50
BeanDipI follow the wiki instructions and everything seems fine, I get an ldm login (very plane grey box with no decor) but when I06:50
BeanDipI try loging in it seems as though it accepts the login, tries to start an xsession, the screen flickers and it cocomes back to the login box. I try switching to the console06:50
BeanDipto login but it doesn't seem that any of my user accounts are available. on the server I sudo -s and chroot into the /opt/ltsp/i386 dir, and create a user account in the06:50
ograyou use edubuntu ? 06:50
BeanDipchroot environment and on the thinclient boxes I'm able to login with that, but find that the ubuntu-desktop has not been installed in the ltsp environmentrn am I missing something here?06:51
BeanDipI haven't tried edubuntu yet06:51
BeanDipbut someone else on irc said I should ask herernI was using breezy with the ltsp-server-standalone06:51
ograah, sounds like a messed up ubuntu then... dont create users in the chroot...06:51
BeanDipogra06:52
ogramost liekly your sshd isnt running or the sshkey isnt copied into the chroot06:52
BeanDipoh06:52
BeanDipquestion then06:52
ogralook if /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts exists and isnt empty06:52
BeanDipcan I skip out on all the artwork and theming designed for children under edubuntu?06:52
ograelse run sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys on the server06:52
BeanDipbecause this is for a corporate thinclient06:53
ograyou can uninstall edubuntu-artwork... but it will be a bit complicated to get rid of all the edu apps indeed06:53
BeanDipsheeshrnI should not undertake projects like this on so little sleep06:57
BeanDipmaybe if I take a nap I'll find what's going wrong with my breezy/ltsp06:58

jelknerogra: oliver, you here?11:47
ograjelkner, yes11:48
jelkneri want to make a short how-to on setting up edubuntu when not using the default network11:48
jelkneri'm on a server with 2 nics11:48
jelknercurrently eth0 is setup to be on the office lan which is using 192.168.0.x11:49
jelknerand we are using dhcp to get an address on that network11:49
jelknerso the ltsp side needs to be something else11:49
jelkneri'm guessing 192.168.1.x would be a good choice?11:50
jelkner(that's what we are using now)11:50
ograthe howto is, install with one nic, enable the second one post install and if you think you need it set up NAT like described in the howto we already have11:50
ogrataht how it worked for many people now...11:50
jelknerwhen you say, "install with one nic", which one?11:51
ograyou arent bound to any ip range anymore since the release11:51
ograpick as you like11:51
ograit doesnt matter...11:51
jelknerwell, since the install is going to want net access to check for updates and such, i should set eth0 to use that, with dhcp, yes?11:52
ograthe dhcp server will server the matching card to the dhcpd.conf file you set up like described in the install doc11:52
jelkneri apologize, i haven't read the install doc11:52
jelknerwhere is it?11:52
ogra http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuInstallNotes 11:53
jelknercool11:53
ograhas thre links at the bottom...11:53
ogra*three11:53
=== jelkner goes off to read the install doc
ograit really doesnt matter how you do it... the dhcp server will use the NIC with the matching IP 11:54
ograthe next release will allow one NIC to be dhcp client driven and the other to have a static one where it servers the thin clients11:54
ogra(there is not much in the install doc ;) )11:55
jelknerbut that is what i want now11:55
ograsince there is not much to do11:55
jelkneri want the thin clients on the static eth111:55
jelknerwith 192.168.1.x11:56
ografine 11:56
jelkneris that in the doc (i didn't finish reading yet)11:56
jelkner?11:56
=== bdoin [n=coudoin@bla31-1-82-228-70-121.fbx.proxad.net] has left #edubuntu ["Client]
ograit doesnt need to be in the doc11:56
jelknerwhy?11:56
ograif you have two nics the installer gives you a choice11:56
ograso you pick the one you need for install, give it an ip (dhcp is disabled on install) and do your instll11:57
jelknerseperate choices for network and thin clients?11:57
ograpost install you grab the gui and myke your settings as needed11:58
ograsorry, i'm working since 20h excuse my tyopos11:58
jelknerwhat about getting the thin clients to work?11:58
jelknerno problem11:58
ograas stated in the doc... you edit the dhcpd file to match the right interface, thats all11:59
jelknerok, let me finish reading the doc11:59
=== jelkner returns to reading the docs
jelknerwow, the docs are beautiful!12:01
jelknerok, i'm ready to go... thanks!12:01
jelknertalk to you later...12:02
ograthey certainly need improvement ... so if you have suggestions, go ahead :)12:02
jelknerwhat i see looks great12:02
ograi'll do a detailed description how it works interneally....12:02
jelknerit is a clear, step-by-step telling you what you need to know to make it work12:03
ogramost of the support i have is caused by people that try to use ltspadmin iin edubuntu12:03
jelknerah, i've never done that12:03
jelkneri'm not even familiar with ltspadmin12:04
ograwhile edbuntu ltsp can work with lts.conf, ltspadmin seems to add some very broken settings (at least for edubuntu)12:04
