pussfellerFlammia: makeing a script 777 means everyone can write it, execute, or read it07:55
pussfelleror any file for that matter07:55
Flammiaso by running chmod +x, I add 111 to a script's permission key??07:55
Flammiato allow anyone to run it07:56
pussfellerthats a good question07:56
pussfelleryea that changes all the perm07:56
Flammiaer... well, it would only be 111 if nobody could run it before using chmod... othewise it's confusing07:57
Flammiaso what do the "user" "group" and "others" refer to??07:57
FlammiaI always thought the numbers related to "root" "users" and "guests"07:58
pussfelleryou are user, group is the group the file belongs to, and others, are people who arent either07:58
pussfellerif you do ls -alh in your home dir you will see stuff that relates07:58
Flammiaso the only way to make something accessible only to root, you would have to be root and set permissions to 700??07:59
Flammiaor does root automatically get 7 for all files??08:00
pussfellerroot can do what it wants to anyfile on the system08:01
pussfellerand if you want people to read, but not write, you could do 74408:02
pussfellerroot has all 3, group and others have read only08:02
Flammiaalright... so i get what user and others refer to... but I'm a little sketchy on group08:03
drumlinegroup is what group the user belongs to in /etc/group08:04
drumlinegroup or groups08:04
pussfellersay you wanted to share files, but only certain people were allowed to chnge the files, you could make a group, put those users in the group, and then chmod 77408:06
Flammiaoh, cool08:06
pussfellerand chown user.group -R filedir08:07
