=== divansantana [n=divan@wbs-196-2-112-66.wbs.co.za] has joined #edubuntu [12:15] Hello I was wondering if anyone can tell me a bit about the differences of Nomachines nx technology-freenx vs LTSP,Linux terminal server project [12:15] I would like to setup a terminal server for a company and am trying to pic a technology... [12:17] freenx has some legal issues from what I understand [12:17] but it is fast [12:17] beyond that, no idea [12:19] divansantana, LTSP is nice for the local network [12:19] if you use thin clients [12:20] if you just want to work on the terminal server remotely you can use freenx [12:20] we use both [12:20] you can combine them perfectly [12:20] howso? [12:20] LTSP works with thinclients [12:20] so the network has thinclients [12:21] I think freenx is GPL? Just not sure if it is suitable for 500 clients acting as terminal server! [12:21] but if i want to work on the terminal server on my workstation i connect with FreeNX [12:21] is LTSP project easy to setup?? [12:21] never tried 500 clients [12:21] it mostly depends on the server :) [12:23] you probably need several machines or really fancy hardware for 500 [12:23] freenx or LTSP? with Fancy hardware that is? [12:23] both [12:24] because all programs are running on the terminal server [12:24] 500 clients is quite a lot [12:25] Sorry but why both?? [12:26] divansantana, oh you can pick just one [12:26] LTSP is for thinclients [12:26] FreeNX is for remote desktop [12:26] since it have a bit different use we use both [12:26] ok I think I finally clicked :) [12:27] Thanks alot for your help! [02:44] edubuntu questions this morning [02:46] dhcp is not working correctly. everytime I boot up the system and the diskless client, the ip address given the client by the edubuntu server seems to be being decremented by about 5 addresses. I have heard of people running out of ip addresses for this reason. === jinty [n=jinty@205.134.224.215] has joined #edubuntu [02:46] repeating this for jinty who just joined. I have heard of people running out of ip addresses for this reason. [02:46] tinsleyc, no release time in dhcp.conf [02:47] 2nd question. How do you set the default resolution for the not pretty login screen being served up by LTSP; its too high and I am afraid it is going to be a problem for me tonight in a demo I am doing for a child care facility. [02:48] Interesting though, even without the release time, that it is being decremented by 5 and not one. [02:48] sry don't know [02:48] ah [02:48] sry then not much help from then [02:49] dhcp is not a major issue as I am not going run out of it anytime soon and I know enough about dhcp workings to be more than dangerous, darn right distructive! [02:50] The login screen resolution is a major concern for me though and I will need to figure that one before I go. [02:50] tonight. [02:51] stick around u should have an answer from ogra sometime [02:51] One time I did notice that it came up in a lower resolution but then reverted back to 1400X whatever. [02:51] All well within the capabilities of the monitors in my lab environment but won't be at the demo site.
