[04:32] hi spike [04:32] but serviceable [04:32] where should i get my files? [04:33] tarvid: I've no idea what u're talking about, sorry [04:34] there was a breezy "server" release a couple of months ago, does dapper include those efforts? [04:37] well, there will be a dapper "server" release if that's what you mean [04:38] tarvid: which efforts? === spike keeps not getting it [04:38] Pygi, i found a dead link to nightly dapper server builds [04:38] spike, LDAP among others [04:38] tarvid: well, not sure that there is a current server build [04:38] LDAP what? if it'll be included in dapper? [04:39] tarvid: The "server" CD is just a different package selection from the regular CD. [04:39] there are more than enough packages, the issue is how much work is required to get them to work together [04:39] tarvid: All the packages come from the same archive. [04:40] infinity: and the dapper server will have tweaked kernel, won't it? [04:40] Pygi: it will [04:40] Pygi: The dapper server CD will have the "server" kernels on it, yes, but those are also in the main archive. [04:40] infinity: yup, I know... [04:40] So, you can just as easily use a "normal" CD, then switch kernels, or do a netinstall, or, or.. [04:40] so if I download dapper and say "server" at the install I get the "server" release? [04:40] there was a separate iso section on the mirrors called ubuntu-server [04:41] tarvid: Basically. "server" at the install prompt just means "install a very minimal system, and let me tweak it after" [04:41] tarvid: "ubuntu-server" has a different set of packages on the CD (not installed by default, just shipped), and a different default kernel (but you can install that after the fact, if you use a regular CD...) [04:42] Just install "linux-server" after you install dapper, if you want to check out the server kernel. [04:42] ah! perhaps exactly what I am looking for. [04:43] i run three ubuntu web servers, one (not ubuntu at the moment) mail server, one backup server, a staff server, ... [04:44] a few of the staff members have sandbox servers [04:44] we like to stay on top of ubuntu servers in some rational manner === ajmitch [n=ajmitch@203.89.178.198] has joined #ubuntu-server [04:45] it is beginning to look like a career === spike is worried [04:46] what does spike want to do? === ajmitch [n=ajmitch@203.89.178.198] has joined #ubuntu-server [04:53] one of the tasks i am facing is a new mail server [04:54] i pulled user shell accounts ages ago and a virtual server makes sense [04:54] the sql setup for courier and postfix is close but not congruent [04:54] i have several people who maintain mail accounts [04:55] i'd like to have a consistent tool for them to add, archive, delete mail accounts [04:55] i haven't found one that rolls up everything into a package === ivoks [n=ivoks@ubuntu/member/ivoks] has joined #ubuntu-server === Xoritor [n=xoritor@xorit.net] has joined #ubuntu-server [07:01] wow === ogra [n=ogra@ubuntu/member/ogra] has joined #ubuntu-server [07:37] anyone here run ubuntu with xen [07:37] i see a few mentions on the forums [07:38] Xoritor: I do, self compiled [07:38] do you have to self compile it? [07:39] yes [07:39] Xoritor: integration is a bit problematic because of ubuntu release cycle/policies and xen ones. in short their kernel patch release cycle is too slow and wont apply to latest kernel provided by ubuntu. [07:39] oh [07:39] bummer [07:39] Xoritor: if u want something stable of course. dev tree has patches that applies to current, tho [07:40] hmm [07:40] xen should enter linus's kernel :/ [07:40] it will, in time [07:40] ivoks, i have not used it enough to say if that would be good or bad [07:40] ;-) [07:40] heh [07:41] Xoritor: "it's the best thing since sliced bread" === spike loves that one [07:41] ehehe [07:41] always made me laugh [07:41] Xoritor: if you take a look on linus's kernel, you would see Xen is much more stable then most of that kernel :) [07:41] http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/global/products/monitors/topics/en/monitor_3007wfp?c=us&l=en&s=gen <- how's that for a monitor [07:42] 30"? [07:42] once they get guests running with no modifications on intel/amd hw virtualization, then things will get serious [07:42] lol, that's a great TV for movies :) [07:42] 2560x1600 resolution... [07:43] I tend to dislike 'em for quite a few reasons [07:43] some desktop that would be... [07:43] 2-3x17-21 is a *much* better solution imho [07:44] spike: i agree [07:44] ivoks: an lcd computer monitor is likely to suffer from the "no dark" problem [07:44] it's easier to keep things organized with more screens running separated X, not xinerama [07:44] it's easier to replace a faulty one and u wont kill urself if for some reason u break it by accident [07:45] if separate X displays, just run x2x [07:45] I prefer just one monitor really [07:45] And the higher the resolution the better [07:45] ubijtsa: eh? why should I? and there's better than x2x, synergy [07:45] Of course, I don't want to spend that much money on a monitor. :) [07:45] ubijtsa: works with windoze too [07:45] ivoks, i dont dispute that at all [07:45] I'd like two, in xinerama, with 1600x1200 on each [07:46] anyway, x2x or whatever implies other boxes, here we were talking of monitors [07:46] nvidia has got a relly well working mode for that, besides xinerama [07:46] i would like one small 14 or 15" [07:46] no wide screen [07:47] my next laptop won't be widescreen :/ [07:47] 3 17 is my best setup [07:47] and, it won't be dell :)) [07:47] god bless u man :) [07:47] got an inspiron? [07:47] yup 8600 [07:47] doh [07:47] irc'ing from one of those crappy thingie [07:47] there is more glue than plastic on this laptop :)) [07:48] anyway, back to work, talllk to u later [07:48] bye === ajmitch_ [i=ajmitch@port162-39.ubs.maxnet.co.nz] has joined #ubuntu-server === MarioMeyer [n=meyer@ubuntu/member/mariomeyer] has joined #ubuntu-server === infinity [n=adconrad@203-214-98-208.dyn.iinet.net.au] has joined #ubuntu-server === mgalvin [n=mgalvin@ubuntu/member/mgalvin] has joined #ubuntu-server === tuhl [n=tuhl@p5498CDEB.dip.t-dialin.net] has joined #ubuntu-server === RemoteViewer [n=555@stan.physik.fu-berlin.de] has joined #ubuntu-server
