LaserJockhmm, I wonder if we could ship a "From the Wiki" doc that has HTMLized or XMLized wiki pages12:49
BurgworkLaserJock, see the thread on the maling list12:50
LaserJockBurgwork: right, that's what I'm looking at12:50
BurgworkI don't see it working with our  current wiki12:50
LaserJockhow hard would it be to HTMLize a wiki page?12:50
Burgworkwhat do you do with it once it is turned into HTML?12:50
LaserJockship it12:51
LaserJockput it on help.ubuntu.com12:51
Burgworkthat means no translation12:51
Burgworkwhy not have two wikis and keep it moin for help.ubuntu.com as well?12:51
LaserJockwell, it seems like an oxymoron to me to have a static wiki :-)12:51
Burgworkno it is not12:52
Burgworkit is harnessing the power of hte wiki in a non-traditional way12:52
LaserJockwho would get to edit it? just doc-team members?12:52
Burgworkexactly12:52
LaserJockand then we would point to it in our shipped documentation?12:52
Burgworkwith an area to leave comments that doesn't require an account12:52
Burgworkthe interactions of wiki <--> shipped still need to be worked out12:53
LaserJockif we do have a (more) static wiki then we should be able to have a "From the Wiki" page with links and brief summaries of what is on our wiki12:54
Burgworkyep, exactly12:54
Burgworkand we can say "this is good" in a simple way12:54
LaserJockhow would we track changes in the w.u.c pages12:54
Burgworkwhat do you mean?'12:54
LaserJockwell, once we import a page into "our" wiki we would have to keep track of the changes in the w.u.c pages and update ours as needed12:55
Burgworkno, the page would be moved, not copied12:56
LaserJockoh, I don't think that is a very good idea, but I'll have to think about that12:56
BurgworkI imagine us moving our in progress docs to doc.ubuntu.com12:56
Burgworka redirect would be left and that page locked12:56
LaserJockbut then authors (and others) can't work on their wiki pages12:57
Burgworkyes they can, because they can be granted write access to them12:57
LaserJockbut then it just turns into a slightly better wiki because we would have quite a few people asking for write access12:58
Burgworkno12:58
LaserJockI would think it would turn people off of wanting to improve the doc because they can't edit it in the same way as the w.u.c pages12:59
BurgworkLaserJock, the pages we would move are pages that are unlikely to see any useful editing, such as RestrictedFormats12:59
LaserJockI suppose12:59
Burgworkand there would be an anon comment place01:00
LaserJockhow many pages do you think we are talking about here?01:00
Burgworka dozen for starters01:00
LaserJockthat wouldn't be too bad01:00
Burgworkeach page would be need to carefully considered01:00
Burgworkit would also provide a goal01:00
Burgworkto get your page moved to help01:01
LaserJockbut then what is the advantage over just turning those into XML and putting them in the svn repo?01:01
Burgworksorry, got to run01:01
LaserJockI agree the motivation factor whould be cool01:01
Burgworkthe advantage is that they are still in the wiki01:01
LaserJockalright, I see your poing more. I'll let you go now ;-)01:02

mgalvini started reading USDF, i think i missed something... what is GWOS?03:01

mgalvinis there a link to a site?03:03

LaserJockno it's very real03:04
mgalvinhmm... i have been so busy... it seems i have missed a lot :-/03:04

robotgeekdocs.gwos.org03:05
LaserJockyeah, I just found it03:06
mgalvinhmm.. server not found03:06
mgalvinwhat does the GWOS stand for?03:07
robotgeekdoc.gwos.org, sorry03:08
robotgeekThe Great Wyrms of Sorrow and Regret03:08
robotgeekthat's what it's causing us all03:09
=== mgalvin pokes around a bit
manickathe UDSF is not a splitoff from the Forums, it is part of the forums03:09
manickaIt is the forums knowledgebase and centralised repo of data03:10
LaserJockI meant sort of a splitoff from wiki.ubuntu.com03:12
manickaalthough it is in the wiki format its purpose is not to be a Documentation Project like the Wiki03:12
manickaIt's a place to 'store/organise ' forum data, so that it is more accessible to forum users03:14
robotgeekmanicka: i've spoken to you before, and you know my views, so i will stay away from this discussion03:15
manickaok03:16
manicka:)03:16
mgalvinfirst if forum users find the wiki unfriendly (understandable for noobs) how does *another* **wiki** solve the problem??03:18
manickaThat would be a point if both wikis were Doc projects. The Storage Facility is not a Documentation project03:21
mgalvinits a knowledge base correct?03:24
mgalvinof sorts03:24
manickathe data entered at doc.gwos.org has been mainly completed by a handful of maintainers. Users do not generally contribute03:24
manickayes a knowledgebase03:25
=== mpt [n=mpt@219-89-150-86.jetstart.xtra.co.nz] has joined #ubuntu-doc
LaserJockso the forums can't handle the knowledgebase type structure?03:29
mgalvinwhy would that info not fit into the ubuntu wiki or h.u.c or something similar03:29
mgalvinubuntu is all about openness, why is it necessary to have a separate knowledgebase on a separate (no obvious) site?03:31
manickait's not as easy to store and create the knowledgebase because of license restrictions03:31
mgalvins/no/non/03:31
manickaoptions were investigated to make it part of the forums site itself, but the forum software couldn't handle the task03:32
mgalvinso ultimately this is fundamentally about lic issues, correct?03:32
manickait's all explained on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDSF03:32
mgalvinmostly03:32
mgalvinright i started reading that, just want to make sure i am clear...03:33
=== mgalvin still has more catching up to do

mgalvinok, at any rate, i will read what more I can find on the issue and follow in the appropriate places03:35
mgalvinmanicka: thanks for filling me in a bit03:35
manickanp :)03:36
LaserJockso UDSF is Creative-Commons Public Domain which is why there could be some issues I suppose03:36
manickafeel free to add comment to the talk page03:36
mgalvini will do03:37
manickaI'm not 100% sure on the reason for that licence. It was implemented after extensive discussions between mdke and king bahamut03:38

manickahmmm, online since about Oct 2005 from memory03:41

robotgeekhey _jason , right here i guess04:28
_jasonWell, someone just came into #ubuntu asking how to remove realplayer after installing it using help.ubuntu.com instructions (ch. 3, question 3).  The thing is that those instrucitons say to just run the .bin executable from real.com and don't provide either directions on removing it or a warning that it will be difficult to remove.  I haven't installed it myself, so I don't know if it provides an easy to use shortcut to remove it in04:30

mdkeyes10:56

LaserJockif it was MIT/BSD could I?10:56
KyralFrankly I don't give a **** as long as you say something along the lines of "This document contains material originally written by <me>" or somesuch10:57
mdkeKyral, omg, go read some licenses10:57
Kyralhuh?10:57
LaserJockKyral: I don't even care about that but we have to worry about licensing10:58
Kyralah10:58
Kyralthis is why I stay outta this stuff...makes my life hard lol10:58
mdkeKyral, the sort of non-free licenses that we are trying to exclude are those which require accreditation like that10:58
Kyralah10:59
KyralI just don't want someone COMPLETELY passing my work as thier own ;P10:59
LaserJockwell, I'm kinda stuck to the GPL as far as I know because all the Debian developer docs are GPL11:00
Kyralyah11:00
KyralGPL++11:00
LaserJockbut GPL isn't compatible with GFDL as far as I know :(11:00
Kyral...GNU made a license that isn't compatable with one of thier own licenses?11:01
mdkeGFDL is so unfree11:01
=== Kyral busts out laughing
