mhzwarpedmind: do you have access to the edubuntu server as a admin ?04:34
Burgundaviasalut warpedmind04:35
mhzwarpedmind: usually, there are 2 things to consider when you face the situation you describe:04:36
warpedmindyes I am admin on the machine04:36
mhzwarpedmind: a) make sure, the user you want to login is not currently logged in in the server side04:36
mhzb) at the server side, run this: ltsp-update-sshkeys04:37
mhznad try to login with the user again04:37
mhznad =and04:37
warpedmindok thats something new to try04:37
warpedmindalso I am downloading the dapper cd both live and install to see how that helps04:38
mhzwarpedmind: and I am assuming you read http://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuInstallNotes and followed all instructions04:38
mhzwarpedmind: cool04:39
warpedmind:-)  I wouldnt be here otherwise04:39

mhzwarpedmind: sorry, I had to ask :)04:39

mhzof course, not reading is unhealthy04:40

warpedmindive run k-12LTSP  and  LTSP through regular ubuntu but since edubuntu doesnt use the standards Im at a loss04:40
mhzwarpedmind: yeah, our ltsp is 'speacial' :D04:41
warpedmindim always glad to help those who really need it cause I know others need to be guided but for myself I always try all that I can on my own before I ask for help04:41
mhzwarpedmind: but edubuntu server stting is just a matter of following th esteps asked by the cd 04:41
mhzwarpedmind: that's agood policy04:42

mhzwarpedmind: just rememeber we always may know less than others, and we may also misunderstand the questions asked, etc. That's why we are not fans of RTFM here04:44
warpedmindyeah I followed along on the install and Im on a 192.168.0.* network so no major config there and the gui login came up but no actual login possible.  so I tried enabling the xdcmp only to realize that its not really needed04:44
warpedmindyep agreed04:45
mhzwarpedmind: but did the ltsp-update.. work?04:45
warpedmindnot to mention that you can learn more through other peoples mistakes but you learn BETTER through your own.04:45
mhzand in case you touched the dhcpd.conf.. remember to use /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:46

mhzDidius: hi03:17
mhzI got some lucid couple of minutes, so I can try to help you03:17
Didiuswell i just came to wonder if edubuntu was ready for school use03:18
Didiusi'm an ICT teacher03:18
mhzDidius: cool! just the kind of teacher I need to talk to ;)03:19
jsgotangcoDidius: if you require a networked computer lab, yes edubuntu is very usable03:19
mhzDidius: what are your expectations about edubuntu?03:19
Didiuswell that is the problem. I would love to give the kids an introduction to linux, and i guess edubuntu is perfect for that03:20
Didiusi have some spare lessons so.03:20
Didiusbut the thing is, what should be told?03:20
mhzDidius: oooh, okis03:20
mhzWell, Edubuntu is ready for many schools needs03:21
mhzit is designed in a way teachers and lab admins have less tasks to set up manually03:21
jsgotangcoDidius: are you planning for a lab or just a few computers?03:21
Didiusa lab03:21
mhzDidius: you have lots of edu-apps, esp. for young learners03:22
Didiusbut I can't let the kids use edubuntu all the time. I can't let them learn to work with OOo instead of MS office, it's not official03:22
Didiusis edubuntu really ready to replace MS?03:23
mhzDidius: Edubuntu is independant of MS apps03:23
jsgotangcowhat apps do you use?03:23
mhzMS apps, afaik, are web browser, office suite03:23
mhzDidius: and for such apps, (not edu apps IMHO), linux world can offer alternatives03:24
jsgotangcoand you can dual boot from windows/linux if you want too03:24
jsgotangcoif you install a server, and your clients can boot from the network, nothing gets erased on the client machines03:25
mhzDidius: edubuntu = LTSP environment + edu-apps (over 60 edu apps) + standard office apps (word processor, spreadsheet, image manipulation, presentations, audio and video, web browsers, etc)03:26
DidiusI have to teach kids simple programming language (turbo pascal), and the office suite. The office suite must be MS office (that is prescripted by the governement). However to show the student that there exist something different I would like to teach them a bit edubuntu. Which will not take a lot of lessons (just some spare hours). I was actually wondering if I should install edubuntu dual boot..03:27
DidiusThe thing jsgotangco says sounds pretty neat. 03:27
jsgotangcoyou can dual boot but it'll eat up your HD space, but if you have bootable clients, nothing gets erased03:27
mhzDidius: indeed, any standard linux distro lets you work nicely via dual boot03:27
jsgotangcoyou just need a beefy server though03:27
jsgotangcoor just make sure just a few machines get to connect to the server03:28
Didiushmm. I'll have to discuss that with the head, but I'm definatlty a fan. Did any of you have experience/teach edubuntu at school?03:28
mhzDidius: me03:29
jsgotangconah i'm ashamed to admit that i hvaen't deployed a lab yet although ive been involved with edubuntu since it started03:29
Didiusinvolved? in what part?03:29
mhzDidius: but demoing, not teaching it yet (I will in April)03:29
Didiusmhz, what kind of experience?03:29
Didiusmhz demoing? planning on switching to edubuntu?03:30
mhzDidius: about 15 soon-to-become-teachers used Edubuntu for a couple of days... they loved it! esp. the kinder teachers and math teachers03:31
Didiuswhat math apps?03:32
mhzDidius: they wanted to try edubuntu so they can start showing other teacher about it in April03:32
Didiusi have dr geo Kig and Kmplot.. that are the best i guess?03:33
mhzMath Games, TuxMath, Kbruch, KIG, etc03:33
Didiushm03:33
mhzDidius: for advanced math learners, xmaxima is the coolest!03:33

DidiusI'm a fan of the 'free knowledge' idea, but I don't think it works always. Biggest example is wikipedia. I have been active and have concluded it does not work03:48
Yagisanit is a shame, gentoo is @ 41. we must catch them :-P03:49
mhzDidius: well, it all depends on the objective you have. Wikipedia is just a potential reference, not an enciclopedia03:49
lucasvo_anybody has set up sftp?03:51
lucasvo_is there a server which doesn't require a systemuser for every sftp user?03:51
Yagisansorry lucasvo_ never setup sftp. Did google help ?03:53
jsgotangcohmm sftp is just a subservers of ssh03:56
jsgotangcosubservice i mean03:56
Yagisanso, how "pure" are your systems guys/girls ? All open source or do you run proprietary software as well ?04:00
Yagisanmy systems run proprietary graphics drivers for those that need it for opengl to work, and I have folding@home running, otherwise open source04:01
Yagisanalthough, wesnoth is slow over ltsp :(04:02
Didiusltsp?04:03
jsgotangcoat the moment, im pure04:03
jsgotangcoalthough i did install gstreamer-ugly here hehe04:03
jsgotangcoso i guess im not so pure after all04:04
jsgotangcoDidius: linux terminal server project04:04
mhzi am pure afaik04:04
jsgotangcomhz: no mp3 playback whatsoever04:04
jsgotangcohehe04:04
jsgotangco:)04:04
mhzhehehe04:05
YagisanDidius: ltsp is the linux terminal services project. It is a core part of edubuntu, it allows you to reuse old pcs as thin clients.04:06
mhzjsgotangco: i do play ogg too:)04:07
Yagisanjsgotangco: well IIRC gstreamer-ugly has source, but they may have patent issues in the USA, Japan (and anywhere else it has been forced as part of a so called "Free Trade Agreement" with the USA) 04:08
jsgotangcoYagisan: yeah04:08
Yagisanthe only things I can't play back are those that need w32codecs04:08
jsgotangcoi rarely have a use for such04:08
jsgotangcoi have a disc player to do that04:08
Didiushave to restart, bye04:09
Didiusthnx for the info04:09
jsgotangcocheers04:09
Didiusi will keep you guys updated04:09

Yagisana) it's not on my servers arch, b) I don't care for 3rd rate porn in wmv or rmvb format.04:10
jsgotangcoThanks to the LTSP, packages in the K12LTSP, Skolelinux, and Edubuntu, we can provide a school or non-profit with an outstanding and easy to use desktop that is customized for education.04:10

Yagisanactually, I saw edubuntu getting promoted on /. the other day on one of my rare visits04:13

Yagisanso, jsgotangco - would you run folding@home ?04:17
jsgotangcowhat's that?04:17
jsgotangcolike seti?04:17
Yagisanjsgotangco: similar, but the goal is different. It's to study diseases, and hopefully find a cure ( http://folding.stanford.edu/ )04:19
jsgotangcohmm ive heard of somthing like this before04:19
jsgotangcoi can probably run it in one machine that never gets shut down here at home04:19
Yagisanjsgotangco: and our ubuntu team wiki is here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoldingAtHome04:19
Yagisanjsgotangco: I run it on all boxes, it doesn't matter if they shutdown or not04:20
jsgotangcochecking04:20
Yagisanjsgotangco: it only runs on idle priority, so no strain on the box04:20

Yagisanjsgotangco: I had a box finally send a unit back, so my stats are here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Yagisan&teamnum=4510404:21
jsgotangcois this like team bragging rights thing?04:23
Yagisansomewhat :) it's a bit of fun to see who has the most points04:24
YagisanI joined team ubuntu, because it would be nice to see ubuntu as #104:24
Yagisancurrently ubuntu is #686, and gentoo is #4104:25
YagisanI suggest installing using the script on the wiki myself04:25
Yagisanjsgotangco: so, is it interesting ?04:28
jsgotangcoyes i'll installi it on my machines later and sign up04:29
Yagisan:) cool04:29

shannaraI am very happy with flight4. LTSP is working great. I had to rebuild the server because running update screws up openoffice and gaim. Everything works except cups. Can anyone help with this? Does anyone know of a fix or an alternate printing management?11:54
