Madpilot | hi all | 06:40 |
robotgeek | hey Madpilot | 06:41 |
robotgeek | sorry, i lost track of the script we were working on | 06:41 |
Madpilot | np | 06:42 |
robotgeek | i made it slightly better,still not very useful | 06:42 |
Burgundavia | salut Madpilot | 06:42 |
Madpilot | hi Burgundavia | 06:42 |
Madpilot | robotgeek, I was going to write a note to the mailing list (and cc it to the art list) about the covers & the script we were planning | 06:43 |
robotgeek | Next was getting qtruby working using Ruby extconf.rb script for the extension. That worked as long as I did it from the mingw shell, and not from the others. I found that to build Qt and QtRuby I had to use all three shells at different times. So after a bit of handing hacking the generated Makefile, I found the qtruby code compiled without much problems and only a couple of minor things needing fixing such as a call to vasprintf that mingw | 06:46 |
robotgeek | There are still some issues to be sorted out with the port, such as a garbage collection bug which causes half the Qt examples to crash unless they're run with 'GC.disable', but apart from that the Windows version works great. | 06:46 |
robotgeek | shit. sorry | 06:46 |
robotgeek | http://rafb.net/paste/results/XUsBb578.html | 06:46 |
Madpilot | wrong paste? | 06:46 |
robotgeek | the url is correct one | 06:46 |
Madpilot | thought so | 06:46 |
robotgeek | i had no idea what was in the clipboard, freaking middle button :P | 06:46 |
Madpilot | I need to send a note to the Inkscape list asking about the inkscape command line stuff - "man inkscape" is less than helpful (surprise, surprise...) ;) | 06:46 |
robotgeek | oh, if we could do that, it would be nice. i did get the strings this time, works with Kubuntu too, | 06:46 |
robotgeek | will not work if something changes more "drastically" | 06:46 |
Madpilot | Inkscape can take an svg and output a PNG from cli - but I can't figure out the blasted syntax... | 06:47 |
robotgeek | lemme see | 06:49 |
robotgeek | -e, --export-png=FILENAME | 06:49 |
Burgundavia | Madpilot: man inkscape may have been written by the debian packager | 06:49 |
Madpilot | Burgundavia, could have been - it seems complete, but it's one of those "you have to know this stuff already" man pages... | 06:49 |
Madpilot | robotgeek, found that, but "inkscape --export-png=foo.svg" doesn't seem to produce foo.png - I'm missing something... | 06:50 |
robotgeek | Madpilot: i think you might need inkscape -e=foo.png foo.svg? | 06:51 |
Madpilot | could be -the man page isn't clear | 06:51 |
robotgeek | seems to have worked for me | 06:52 |
Madpilot | cool - let me see | 06:52 |
Madpilot | let me try it here, rather :P | 06:53 |

mdke | just to say hi? | 08:06 |
LaserJock | mdke: oh yes, I was going to go through my print copy and fix as much as I can | 08:06 |
LaserJock | and I was still a little uncertain of what does and doesn't get translated | 08:07 |
LaserJock | I'd like to avoid messing up translators as much as possible | 08:07 |
mdke | LaserJock: yeah, try to avoid changing too many strings, unless there are really bad things there. | 08:07 |
mdke | bear in mind that long paragraphs are time consuming to translate, whereas short strings aren't | 08:08 |
LaserJock | but if they aren't translated then there shouldn't be any harm, right? like urls | 08:08 |
mdke | if you change a url, you change the whole paragraph that it is in. | 08:08 |
mdke | so that has to be retranslated | 08:08 |
LaserJock | hmm, that stinks. ok, I'll try to keep that in mind | 08:08 |
LaserJock | I just have to remember to think of things in paragraph chunks rather than sentence chunks | 08:10 |

Burgwork | LaserJock, you around? | 10:53 |
LaserJock | yes | 10:54 |
Burgwork | LaserJock, just looking at the EdubuntuSchoolAdvocacy thing | 10:54 |
Burgwork | very cool doc, but I noticed two big issues | 10:54 |
Burgwork | first, organization. Tell me what it does, and then what is looks liek | 10:54 |
Burgwork | second, I would organize the apps by what they do, rather than what they are | 10:55 |
Burgwork | ie, put kstars under Stellarium, not kstars | 10:55 |
LaserJock | working on both those issues right now | 10:55 |
Burgwork | remember, teachers think in terms of lesson plans and specific topics | 10:55 |
Burgwork | also, did you see the edits I made? | 10:55 |
LaserJock | yeah, didn't look at them in great detail | 10:56 |
Burgwork | ok | 10:56 |
Burgwork | I cleaned up the first two sections | 10:56 |
LaserJock | does something like https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdubuntuSchoolAdvocacy/LaserJock look better? | 10:56 |
Burgwork | just a sec | 10:57 |
Burgwork | yep | 10:57 |
Burgwork | I would also avoid talking about duplicative things, like mplayer | 10:57 |
Burgwork | concentrate on the default install | 10:58 |
LaserJock | yes, I just told them to scratch mplayer | 10:58 |
Burgwork | mplayer is something old linux users love, but new ones hate | 10:59 |
LaserJock | what about the question headings? | 10:59 |
Burgwork | question headings? | 10:59 |
LaserJock | on EdubuntuSchoolAdvocacy | 10:59 |
LaserJock | there are several sections that have a question as the heading | 11:00 |
LaserJock | "What applications are installed?" and "Is it difficult to learn?" for instance | 11:00 |
Burgwork | LaserJock, I would have a small section on common questions and have all the questions there | 11:00 |
Burgwork | nothing duplicative | 11:00 |
Burgwork | also, cut down the lenght | 11:01 |
Burgwork | I assume the target audience is a brochure for teachers/etc. to look at | 11:01 |
LaserJock | so maybe put a Q&A section that answers the short little questions rather than have a section for each one? | 11:02 |
LaserJock | I think that assumption is correct | 11:02 |
highvoltage | LaserJock: initially, all of them were questions, so i started converting some of them away from it (i didn't like the questions), i intend to move it all away from the questions | 11:06 |
LaserJock | highvoltage: good | 11:07 |
highvoltage | Internal Server Error | 11:09 |
highvoltage | *sigh* i think i break the wiki when i try to edit stuff | 11:09 |
highvoltage | ah, there it's fine again | 11:09 |

Burgwork | mdke, a former PM of Canada admitted to talking to his dead mother through his dog | 12:00 |
mdke | these things do happen. | 12:01 |
LaserJock | Burgwork: I wonder if there would be translational issues ;-) | 12:03 |
