If I download the latest 2.6.16.16 from kernel.org and compile and install it on Ubuntu Dapper I know it will work [07:35] but we will miss out on the Ubuntu patches right? [07:35] So what will be the end effect if one installs a latest vanilla kernel on Dapper? [07:39] tuxmaniac: "know it will work"? [07:39] tuxmaniac: as in you've tested it, and the udev<->kernel interaction works identically? [07:40] no [07:40] crimsun: There are some problems? [07:40] there are some problems! [07:41] But is there no way to install the latest kernel from kernel.org [07:41] I did install 2.6.16 on Brezy and it pretty much worked fine except for my synaptic touchpad scroll feature [07:41] you can, but there's no guarantee everything will work. The udev<->kernel interaction I mentioned is just one issue. [07:42] hmmm.. so the latest on Ubuntu Dapper is 2.6.15-23 but the topic says -22 !? === ..[topic/#ubuntu-kernel:crimsun] : Ubuntu kernel development discussion ONLY | Kernel GIT tree info (updated): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelGitGuide | 2.6.15-23.35 uploaded (May your computer boot happily) === tuxmaniac thanks crimsun [07:45] crimsun: I want to ask one more standard question. am very much interested in working with the kernel team. How do I start? Submit patches to bugs or how? [07:50] that's an excellent way. === tuxmaniac finds helluva lot of CONFIG variables missing when comared to the 2.6.15- found on Dapper and that off 2.6.16 [07:56] well yes, there are rather gigantic differences === fabbione [i=fabbione@195.22.207.162] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === maks [n=max@baikonur.stro.at] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === lloydinho [n=andreas@rosinante.egmont-kol.dk] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === ivoks [n=ivoks@lns01-0143.dsl.iskon.hr] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === tuxmaniac [n=aanjhan@60.254.67.17] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === _human_blip_ [n=mike@220.157.65.127] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === tuxmaniac [n=aanjhan@60.254.67.17] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === zul [n=chuck@ubuntu/member/zul] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === ivoks [n=ivoks@ubuntu/member/ivoks] has joined #ubuntu-kernel === sevrin [n=sevrin@202.75.186.154] has joined #ubuntu-kernel [05:19] BenC: ping? [05:20] thanks [05:22] btw, 2.6.17-1 is building on everything except hppa and ia64 now [05:24] cool [05:24] it boots on my G4, but on my ultra3k it is causing a openboot panic [05:24] sends it into a POST loop [05:25] interesting [05:25] fabbione: -23 runs fine on mine too.. Just installed today! :) [05:26] tuxmaniac: what model is your? [05:26] sorry fabbione Dint see.. ou guys are talking abt ppc..
