jamisonhi everyone..04:09
jamisonI'm setting up an Edubuntu network for TEFL International, and I'm having trouble with the server install.04:10
jamisonAnyone have the time to lend a hand?04:10
ograjamison, did you follow http://www.edubuntu.org/gettingstarted ?04:10
jamisonsure did. i've tried 2 fresh installs from different ISO burns and downloads.04:11
jamisongets all the way through the install, but after the reboot it won't display the login screen.04:11
ograthats weird, what kind of monitor/graphics card do you have ? and do you hear the drum sound from the login manager after it booted ?04:12
jamisonafter the reboot it loads grub (slowly) and does the mounting etc... then the screen goes blank. what is really strange is that if I press the power button, it asks for root pswd to shutdown.04:13
ograno errors ? 04:13
jamisonnot displayed.04:13
ograwhats the last thing you see on the graphical bootscreen ? 04:14
jamisonwill check. I found this suggestion on the forums: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it couldn't find the .conf04:15
ograthat doesnt sond like your innstalled edubuntu at all04:15
ograrather like you did an expert install or installed the server CD 04:16
ogras/the server/from the server/04:16
jamisonthe first time i installed the workstation of edubuntu, then the server off a different cd.04:17
ograand the workstation install did leave you in that condition as well ? 04:17
jamisonjust got an overclocking error. really strange.04:17
ograthat rather sounds like hardware issues04:17
ograwhat kind of system is that ? 04:18
jamisonsure does. I'm in Egypt, and all I've seen since I've been here is systems thrown together.04:19
ograso whats the HW spec of the server you try to install on04:19
jamisonp3, 200gb western digital HD, 256 ram, network card, etc...04:20
ograok04:21
ograand you have the i386 CD i guess (not the amd64 one by accident or something)04:21
ograalso i assume thats dapper, right04:21
ogra?04:22
jamisonit gets all the way to the "Kernel Log" in the graphical boot before it goes blank. 04:22
jamisonyeah the 6.06 LTS04:22
ograok04:22
ograand its definately an edubuntu CD you used there ? a missing xorg.conf usually cant happen (empty ones could, but not missing ones)04:23
jamisonyup. couldn't even find /etc/x11/04:24
ograthat should be /etc/X1104:24
jamisoni've tried two installs, and the symptoms are the same.04:24
ograwith a capital X04:24
jamisoni'll check again, but when i did a dir unter /etc neither where there. i'll check now04:24
ograwell, the workstation install should have picked it up04:24
lucasvojamison: are you sure the installation finished correctly?04:25
ograi dont know from what you made the server install though, there is no "server" option on the edubuntu CDs 04:25
jamisonyup. it ejected the CD and asked to rebook.04:25
jamisonyeah, but the gettingstarted guide calls it that. i selected teh Install to Hard disk option, where you must supply an IP instead of having it autoconfigured.04:26
ogramake sure you definately only hit enter on the CD bootscreen, if that still finishes properly and you have the samme symptoms, something is really wrong04:26
ograyeah, thats the right one04:27
ogra(we had a "server" option in breezy that didnt install a gui, so thats why i always point out the "server" stuff)04:27
ograsorry, i have to go out for ~1h, i'll be back soon04:28
jamisonyou don't think there is another way other than reinstall? should I just hit enter and do the workstation?04:28
jamisonno worries. thanks for the help04:28
ograno, if you want a server, just use the "install to harddisk" option04:29
ograworkstation omits all server bits and you'd need to set up everything manually04:29
ograbut i see no way how you would end up without X installed if there were no errors during install04:30
ogracan you upload /var/log/instaler/syslog anywhere so i can have a look at it if i come back ? 04:30
ogra*installer04:30

ograhighvoltage, if you want to discuss xfce inclusion in paris now is the time to create your spec for it (see the ubuntu-devel mail from mdz)08:06
highvoltageogra: i just read his mail08:08
highvoltageogra: i trust your judgement though, do you think it's reasonable to write such a spec?08:08
ograok08:08
ograwell, if you want to discuss it, you need to write a spec ;)08:09
highvoltagei sometimes feel that i'm making too many demands here :)08:09
highvoltageok, i'll write a spec :)08:09
ograit would be good if you could determine the additiona size needed for xubuntu-desktop on the CD (note that many packages might already be there)08:10
ograwe could then have a xfce option in the install menu (in case it fits)08:10
=== Yagisan [n=jamie@60-240-85-239-nsw-pppoe.tpgi.com.au] has joined #edubuntu
highvoltageif i do a clean edubuntu install, and apt-get install the bare xfce desktop, can i use the size of /var/cache/apt/archives? (assuming i did an apt-get clean before the install)08:11
ograhmm, that might work, yes08:12
ograbut to get full functionallity, you will need xubuntu-desktop08:13
ograi wouldnt include something that doesnt fully work 08:13
highvoltageok, i'll do an apt-get install xubuntu-desktop too, and see how much we need08:13
ograi.e. if you use the desktop it shall not behave to different from a default ubuntu08:13
highvoltagegood point.08:13
ogra(which xubuntu-desktop guarantees)08:13
ograwe would probably want a special metapackage xubuntu-ltsp-desktop or something that doesnt depend on the goffice stuff08:15
highvoltagei was a bit torn about that for tuxlabs08:16
highvoltagethe goffice stuff flies on thin clients. and generally works well.08:16
highvoltagethe problem is that OpenICDL is completely based of OOo08:16
ograand eats oour diskspace while we already ship oo.o08:17
highvoltageah yes, that too. hopefully Sun and community will get openoffice better.08:17
ograthere is no way that i'd include abiword or gnumeric as long as we ship oo.o08:17

ograi.e. if you set up a whole school, you will want workstations etc08:28

highvoltagei believe that diskless is good, but not doing *everything* on one server08:28
highvoltagethe workstations must so some work too.08:28
