jag_fsfi'm sorry for asking this on the devel channel, but i think it's probably a little to specific for the support channel... running ubuntu's 2.6.10 kernel, one of my machines during kernel boot analyzes the raid1 arrays on disk and determines that one of them has to be reconstructed... then it says: "Stopping tasks: ====\n stopping tasks failed (1 tasks remaining)" which appears to be an error related to software suspend -- why would the kernel be invokin06:08

cvpIs it true that all kernels in Dapper have hyperthreading junk enabled?11:54
infinity(base)adconrad@cthulhu:~$ grep X86_HT /boot/config-2.6.15-23-68611:55
infinityCONFIG_X86_HT=y11:55
infinityCONFIG_X86_HT_DISABLE=y11:55
infinityLooks like it's compiled in but disabled by default to me.11:55
infinity(boot with "ht=on" to turn it on, I think.. or "ht=enable"... Or something... I never remember)11:56
cvpAlright, I've tried tacking on "ht=on" after the "ro quiet splash", and I saw absolutly no boost in performance...11:56
alex_joniinfinity: that's odd.. my /boot/config-2.6.15-23-386 has no X86_HT in it11:57
infinityWhat were you expecting?11:57
infinityalex_joni: makes perfect sense, since th -386 kernel is the "uber safe, failsafe default"11:57
alex_jonioh, yours is 686 .. sorry :)11:57
cvpWell, I was expecting a boost in performance, really.11:57
infinitycvp: What performance change were you expecting?  HT doesn't magically grow you a second CPU, just makes some context switching more efficient in some cases.11:58
alex_jonishouldn't it show up as a second virtual processor under cat /proc/cpuinfo ?11:58
infinityalex_joni: Yes, it should.11:58
alex_jonicvp: just to check that it actually was turned on11:58
cvpIn particular, I was told that I'd see an improvement in the fps output in glxgears...11:59
alex_jonicvp: that's crap probably11:59
infinitycvp: Okay, now you're just trolling, right?11:59
cvpBy the way, my /boot/config-2.6.15-23-686 has HT=y and HT_DISABLE=y11:59
infinitycvp: A) glxgears isn't a benchmark, B) glxgears isn't multithreaded, C) WTF?11:59
cvpWhat? No, I'm a little noobish...11:59
cvpOkay...11:59
cvpUm... that other thing you were mentioning, the checking to see the virtual processor and junk?12:00
cvpHow do I do that?12:00
alex_jonicat /proc/cpuinfo12:00
alex_joniinfinity: it seems the kernel I built (with your help) still didn't quite work ok on another machine. but I just built a new one, and I hope it'll work OK.. if not I might get back to bug you some more12:01
cvpAlrighty, and that outputs information for processors 0 and 1... does that mean I have hyperjunk enabled?12:01
alex_joni"quite work" means that usplash stays dark12:01
infinitycvp: If you only have one CPU, and it's not dual-core, then HT is enabled.12:02
alex_jonicvp: unless you do have a second CPU, yes12:02
cvpOkay, cool. Thanks for the help, and sorry for the inane questions!12:02
infinity(If you have two dual-core CPUs with HT enabled, you'd see 8 CPUs in cpuinfo, for instance)12:02
=== cvp [n=cvp@207-177-225-48.dsl.redshift.com] has left #ubuntu-kernel ["Leaving"]
alex_joniguess 8 CPUs scared him away12:02
alex_joniinfinity: could you explain why only vesafb is needed in initrd? isn't it possible that some user might need some other fb?12:04
