cvp | Alright, so I switched to the 686 kernel recently because of P4 hyperthreading junk. It runs absolutely dandy except for half a second before Ubuntu is finished loading. Somewhere in the initialization (before the welcome screen), the text becomes gibberish and funky characters replace the diagnostic messages. I use an ATI graphics card. Can anyone help me? | 03:36 |
---|---|---|
BenC | are you using fglrx or the stock ati Xorg driver? | 03:47 |
cvp | stock ati xorg | 03:47 |
cvp | wait... | 03:47 |
cvp | or am i... | 03:47 |
cvp | one sec | 03:47 |
cvp | yeah, stock ati | 03:48 |
BenC | sudo apt-get install linux-686 | 03:48 |
BenC | and then change to fglrx and see if that helps | 03:48 |
cvp | Will do. Thanks! | 03:48 |

fabbione | Keybuk: i am getting real tons of: "open: No such device or address" booting sparc. do you have any idea what could cause them? or what should i be looking for? | 12:28 |
Keybuk | yes | 12:28 |
fabbione | Keybuk: .17 and latestes edgy | 12:28 |
Keybuk | I know exactly what causes them | 12:29 |
Keybuk | I just don't care much ;) | 12:29 |
Keybuk | it's just an error | 12:29 |
Keybuk | ie. it needs an if (errno != ENODEV) before the perror() call | 12:29 |
fabbione | ok.. | 12:29 |
fabbione | thanks | 12:30 |
fabbione | BenC: sparc64 UP .17-2 looks good. | 12:30 |
fabbione | Keybuk: even with / on xfs on lvm on raid1 :) | 12:31 |
Keybuk | huh? | 12:31 |
fabbione | sparc64 edgy | 12:31 |
Keybuk | the error is just a cryptic way of saying "usplash is not running" | 12:32 |
Keybuk | usplash_write shouldn't say that :p | 12:32 |
Keybuk | the fix is waiting on the buildd someway | 12:32 |
Keybuk | somewhere | 12:32 |
fabbione | Keybuk: nah.. sorry i mean to say that the latest udev works on sparc with that setup | 12:32 |
Keybuk | oh, right | 12:32 |
Keybuk | yeah, latest udev is largely ok | 12:32 |
Keybuk | just multiple ide controllers is broke with it | 12:32 |
=== fabbione is supposed to be on crack | ||
fabbione | Keybuk: ok.. i can test that... if i feel lucky ;) | 12:32 |
fabbione | Keybuk: but not before next week when you are back home and ready to hack | 12:33 |
Keybuk | no point testing :) I know it won't work | 12:33 |
BenC | fabbione: cool | 12:33 |
fabbione | BenC: didn't test Niagara yet but i might sometimes tomorrow | 12:34 |
fabbione | i want to finish to prepare GFS2 userland first | 12:34 |

fabbione | Keybuk: <fucker>a collection of specific sparc utils</fucker> | 12:47 |
fabbione | ;) | 12:47 |
Keybuk | universe? | 12:47 |
fabbione | Keybuk: main | 12:47 |
Keybuk | seeded? | 12:47 |
fabbione | it has stuff like prtconf | 12:47 |
fabbione | that's the equivalent of dmidecode | 12:47 |
fabbione | it should be seeded | 12:47 |
fabbione | it was in dapper | 12:47 |
Keybuk | it wasn't, because it's in NEW :p | 12:48 |
Keybuk | (though that may be the udeb) | 12:48 |
fabbione | udeb? | 12:48 |
fabbione | ok it's the udeb in NEW | 12:48 |
Keybuk | there's a udeb now | 12:49 |
fabbione | that package is as old as debian | 12:49 |
fabbione | i didn't know... | 12:49 |

fabbione | i dunno if they are actually using it in the new d-i | 12:51 |
fabbione | also because the new d-i hasn't been merged yet | 12:51 |
