I've been using Ubuntu 6.06 server for a while, and was just made aware that with a small script and little effort, things like /etc/passwd can be disoplayed directly into the browser. What gives? How can I stop apache from misbehaving? [08:58] Stian: misbehaving? [08:58] well [08:58] yeah [08:58] you can put an .htaccess file in /etc, but [08:58] it's showing off sensitive information [08:59] You really shouldn't make /etc web-accessible [08:59] is your docroot like / or something? [08:59] exactly [08:59] It's all default [08:59] bizarre [08:59] the default is /var/www/apache-default/ [08:59] the default is /var/www [08:59] oh well [08:59] :) [09:00] I was thinkign of the default vhost [09:00] eeeh [09:00] sorry [09:00] yeah [09:00] I am using vhost [09:00] anywhoo [09:00] ServerRoot "/etc/apache2" [09:00] what's up with that?? [09:00] I believe that's where it looks for its config files [09:00] DocumentRoot is the one you should worry about [09:00] I cannot find any other Root or root in apache2.conf [09:00] hmm [09:01] oohhh [09:01] nooohhh [09:01] Stian: can you please explain what you want to do? [09:02] hang on [09:02] ok [09:02] I need to have apache not display things like /etc/passwd. Now, I added vhost alias things myself, I guess I should add a document root for the [09:02] or? [09:03] I only have VirtualDocumentRoot [09:03] all my sites are "configured" with vhost_alias [09:04] !apache2 [09:04] !apache [09:04] loss [09:06] haha [09:06] :P [09:06] yes, you should have a DocumentRoot entry in your vhost configs [09:06] I've never used VirtualDocumentRoot and I'm not sure what it does :P [09:07] Stian: In apache2 your virtual hosts exist in cd /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default [09:08] hmm, the only config i've made is in apache2.conf :p [09:08] you don't really have to touch that [09:08] I think I removed the loading of sites-enabled/* as well [09:08] :O [09:08] I think you should read the wiki for apache2 [09:09] NameVirtualHost * [09:09] [09:09] UseCanonicalName Off [09:09] DocumentRoot /var/www [09:09] VirtualDocumentRoot /var/www/%0 [09:09] [09:09] http://help.ubuntu.com/community/ [09:09] I dunno if that will work in apache2 [09:09] it will [09:09] it does [09:09] ok [09:09] at least for vhost_alias, the DocumentRoot thing didn't change anything [09:09] I use this for 8 or so domains/hosts [09:10] okay, I'll check the wiki [09:10] ok [09:10] and move the vhost to the assigned directory, and so on :) [09:10] thanks for your inputs [09:11] np I was hardly of any help [09:11] Well, I guess that's what I get for hardly beeing able to explain my problem :P [09:12] :) === SanketMedhi [n=sanket@221.135.149.220] has left #ubuntu-server [] === whaq|away [i=whaq@203.130.197.106] has joined #ubuntu-server === CarlFK [n=carl@c-67-163-39-124.hsd1.il.comcast.net] has joined #ubuntu-server === zenrox [n=zenrox@71.115.198.118] has joined #ubuntu-server [10:40] bye ! === MystaMax [n=mystamax@jimbo.angelica.com] has joined #ubuntu-server === Ries [n=Ries@200.63.220.5] has left #ubuntu-server []
