gtek_Help, i have loaded the newest version of edubuntu, and connect my pcs now converted into thin clients which all have nics with programmed EEprom that contain Pixieboot. for some reason after the install the thin client could not see the server. No protocal found....12:59
gtek_I followed the precedure the the letter and used the default configuration listed in teh documentation. If i am using the default setup should it work ?01:01

netrixsome said i should ask this here so here goes.01:27
netrixi am trying to create a system for diskless clients using dapper like the one described here: http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~zjohnson/howto/diskless_ubuntu.html01:27
netrixi have some extra nfs stuff i need to mount so i put it in fstab.01:28
netrixbut it doesn't mount.  it gets stuck saying "waiting for /whatever/dir" 01:28
netrixafter the client boots if i do mount -a it mounts fine.01:29
netrixi should say it timesout for a long time, not that it gets stuck.01:29
gtek_thats a good question, I was under the impression that pxe boot was a default standard for thin clients, as the k12ltsp is based on pxe boot01:42
gtek_yes i did make sure that the dhcp server was setup. I used the default configuration with the standard IP address of 192.168.0.1-25401:43
gtek_i also used 2 NICs01:43
gtek_the Edubuntu documentation states clearly that if you follow their recommendations your system should be up and running01:45
=== jsgotangco [n=jsg123@ubuntu/member/jsgotangco] has joined #edubuntu
lucasvogtek_: can you paste the output of ifconfig, the dhcpd.conf(the one in /etc/ltsp/) and the output at the thinclient boot process01:51
lucasvonetrix: does mounting work when you restart the workstation?01:52
netrixlucasvo: no it doesn't.  when rebooted it acts the same way, can't mount them during boot but after logging in sudo mount -a works fine.01:54
lucasvonetrix: well, I can't help you with that. Try asking in an ntfs channel.01:55
lucasvoIt is not really related to ltsp01:55
netrixokay.01:56
netrixit wasn't ntfs tho.  it was nfs.01:56
netrixi figured it was a tough question ... but thought i'd ask just in case.01:56
lucasvoyeas, I mean nfs01:56
lucasvoit's very late here, I'm a bit tired01:56
netrixnp. thanx anyways.01:56
Amaranthnetrix: I believe things get mounted on startup _before_ the network is brought up01:57
lucasvoAmaranth: where do you live, btw?01:57
Amaranthnetrix: so putting things in /etc/fstab to automount nfs probably won't work01:57
Amaranthlucasvo: iowa, it's in the middle of the US01:57
lucasvooh, that's why you're up so "late" :)01:57

netrixAmaranth: but with diskless clients the network is already up when it's booting.01:58
Amaranthnetrix: that's a tough one01:58
netrixAmaranth: i know. :)01:58
Amaranthnetrix: I've never run edubuntu in any form before, sorry.01:58
AmaranthI just make things. :)01:58
netrixi mucked around with ltsp, but i need to build something for fat clients, not thin ones.02:00
netrixoh well i'll keep mucking with it ... it's a good way to learn suff anyways.02:00
Chipzzogra_thin: in case you were wondering, I found out what the problem was02:02
Chipzzogra_thin: I had eth0 configured and set to auto in /etc/network/interfaces, and when udev detected the NIC it tried to configure it (while it allready *was* configured), and kabooom02:03
netrixChipzz: i take you had to comment it out and just have a entry in interfaces for lo?02:05

`Leahi didnt create them, came with pc07:35
`Leahnope07:35
`LeahIs IDE1 normally the main partition?07:35
`Leahbecause thats what it wants to free up space on07:35
Petarislet me re-phrase that, are there already partionons filling the disk or is there non-partitioned space left07:36
Petariside1 is the disk itself07:36
Petarisotherwise know as /dev/hda107:36
Petarisor /dev/sda1 if its scsi or sata07:36
`Leahok let me sign on from the pc im installing it on07:37

`Leahhi07:38
Petarishi07:39
`Leahok on /dev/hda there are 5 partitions: /dev/hd1 , /dev/hd2 , /dev/hd3 (extended) and /dev/hd507:39
`Leah/dev/hd5 is the largest, 12.43mb used, 30.27gb free07:40
cbx33Petaris, those were funny videos07:40
Petariscbx33: :)07:40
`Leah/dev/hd2 is actually bigger than hd507:40
`Leahi also think that windows is installed on that partition07:41
Petaris`Leah: Unless you know whats on those partitions I would hesitate to do anything as it sounds like you don't have an non-partitioned space07:41
`Leah/dev/hd2: 19.16GB used , 18:10GB free07:41
Petaris`Leah: it should be /dev/hda2 no?07:41
`Leahyes, i think that windows is installed there07:41
`Leahbecause used on /dev/hd1 is 5.55GB, which is too small for windows, correct?07:42
PetarisWhat version of win?07:42
`LeahXP07:42
`LeahHome07:42
Petarishrm07:42
`Leahand /dev/hd5 is used 12.43MB which is too small07:42
PetarisI'm not sure why all the partitions but I would assume one of them is a maintinace or restore partion of some sort07:42
`Leahso the only once where it can be installed is hd2 if im not mistaken07:42
`Leah/dev/hd3 (extended) size: 30.28GB used: --- free: 555 type: lba07:43
`Leahdunno what thats for07:43
`Leahfree: --- *07:43
Petaris`Leah: fdisk /dev/hda07:44
Petaristhen do a "p" to print the partions07:44
`LeahUnable to open: /dev/hda07:44
Petarisuse a paste service to post the results07:44
Petarisreally?07:45
Petarishrm07:45
`Leahyup07:45
`Leahim on live07:45
`Leahdoes that make a difference?07:45
Petarisnot sure07:45
Petaristry /dev/hd07:45
`Leahdo you know how much space win xp home takes up?07:45
Petarisor /dev/sda107:45
`Leahsame result for both of those07:46
Petarisit depends on what you have installed07:46
Petaristhen something is odd07:46
`Leahbut how much does the base use?07:46
Petarisdepends what you installed07:46
Petarisor removed07:46
`Leahk07:46
PetarisI would guess anywhere from 400MB to 800MB07:47
Petarisbut I could be off there07:47
CornelliusWhen I installed XP on my 250 Gig, I created a 115 Gig NTFS partion for XP and installed Linux on the other partion as ext3.07:47
Petarismine are all custom tweaked and had games and other junk removed07:47
`Leah/dev/hd5 (ntfs) should be ok to install on right?07:48

`Leahbut i mean, to make a linux partion on07:48
`Leahthat should be ok07:48
