And some really good themes were made for it too. [11:41] About everything could have a sound. Scrolling and window dragging each had three sounds (one for when you began scrolling/dragging, one while doing it (in a loop) unless the scrolling had stopped, and one for when you let go). [11:41] I need to see if I can rip some of those sound themes... [11:41] sound-while-dragging sounds more irritating than helpful, to me... [11:43] It was pretty well-done. To me, it wasn't irritating. But individual parts of the sound theme could be turned off in the options. [12:20] hmm [12:20] A mail titled "ALLAH" and written in Turkish was sent to the Python mailing list. [12:56] msikma: cool [12:56] might be nice to hear a few for a comparison [12:56] I'm hoping to work on some audio this afternoon [12:56] as well as some video tutorials for using ubuntu as a recording studio === bersace [n=bersace@did75-13-82-243-217-90.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #ubuntu-artwork === cbx33 [n=pete@ubuntu/member/cbx33] has joined #ubuntu-artwork === bersace is now known as bersace|code [02:32] cbx33! [02:38] i will try === fschoep [n=franksch@adsl-dc-35cb8.adsl.wanadoo.nl] has joined #ubuntu-artwork === cbx33 [n=pete@ubuntu/member/cbx33] has joined #ubuntu-artwork [04:53] new sound :D [04:53] Jungle Beat !! === fschoep [n=franksch@adsl-dc-35cb8.adsl.wanadoo.nl] has joined #ubuntu-artwork [05:43] http://progbox.co.uk/ubuntu10.mp3 [05:43] hi fschoep [05:44] Hey Pete [05:50] like the new sound? [05:57] I like the direction with the african drums, but they're probably a bit "heavy", especially the last drum is a bit thunderous :) [05:58] hokey cokey [05:58] I'll come up with something else [05:58] Maybe you should try some lighter drums like a conga to give it a more "tribal" feel instead of war-drums (just my interpretation). [05:59] ok fschoep nice idea [05:59] If you want to try more things :) - [05:59] i think i was trying to get accross the pwoer of ubunut :p [06:00] That went well :) [06:00] heheh [06:00] troy_s, is keen for me to keep churning out new things [06:00] it is getting harder [06:00] Indeed, that's the way to go [06:00] but I'm still going strong [06:01] It's tough to come up with "new" things over a longer period, but for now you're doing an amazing job :) [06:01] I think if I was to stop now [06:01] and come up with new ideas for edgy+1 it'd be ok [06:01] it's just so many "new" ideas in such a short space of time [06:01] I see [06:02] but I'm definitely enjoying it [06:02] I'm going to produce some video tutorials for ubuntu [06:02] That's very good to hear! [06:02] on how to use JACK and Ardour [06:03] in essence how to create an ubuntu studio [06:03] That's useful information, Ardour is a nice multitrack (and MIDI?) program last time I tried it. [06:03] not MIDI yet [06:03] Do you also know Rosegarden and Muse, both are KDE applications? [06:03] they have some SoC students working on MIDI [06:03] I use RoseGarden with Ardour [06:04] but Muse sucks for Jack syncing [06:04] It does? [06:04] yes [06:04] OK :) [06:04] it doesn't sync at all [06:05] That's bad. I always thought Muse was better than Ardour but I couldn't ever get it to run properly. [06:05] but tbh I think JACK is one of the most fantastic inventions ever [06:05] Ardour rocks [06:05] runs so smoothly [06:05] Yes, Jack is a nice framework, kind of like CoreAudio on Mac OS X. [06:05] and has some top end tools [06:05] I've never used a mac [06:05] I used to have Logic Audio Gold for PC [06:06] till apple bought out emagix [06:06] Ouch, you probably weren't too happy with that, then. [06:06] nope [06:06] no more new versions [06:06] no more support [06:06] That's horrible. [06:06] but tbh, I find Ardour/JACK/RoseGarden as powerful [06:06] if not more so [06:07] Logic was lovely, but I like these guys better [06:07] Really? I haven't looked into it recently, but I always thought Ardour was lacking good effect plugins. [06:07] just use the plethora of plugins from Universe [06:07] ok, yes it is lacking in some respects, but it has everything I need [06:08] That's probably the best way to look at it. [06:08] that's why I'm hoping to do the sounds for ubuntu [06:08] I also use a lot of software which lacks features X, Y and Z, but as long as *I* don't need them, I'm fine with those. [06:09] so I can then maybe do some interviews with somepeople and tell them how fantastic open source is [06:09] That's a great goal. [06:09] fschoep, you learn to make do [06:09] fschoep, well now you know why I want to do the sounds so much [06:09] apart from my synth, everything is done in ubuntu [06:09] That's good background information. [06:10] You ever read Sound On Sound [06:10] No, can't recall doing so. [06:10] fantastic audio magazine [06:10] www.soundonsound.com [06:10] i think [06:10] I was hoping maybe to get an article published in there about doing the ubuntu sounds,..if I manage to get mine in there [06:11] show off what this baby (ubuntu) can really do [06:11] That would be a nice publicity stunt. [06:11] Is it easy to set up Ardour on Ubuntu? [06:12] VERY [06:12] and that's another reason why I was goign to do the video tutorials [06:12] I love the flexibility of JACK/Apps [06:13] What advantages does Jack offer? [06:13] it's fantastic [06:13] just the ability to plug any apps output into anyother apps input [06:13] I always thought Jack was just a sound-system abstraction layer. [06:13] and the common transport system [06:13] I know midi and MMC can do it [06:13] but jack seems to do it so much better [06:14] Sounds useful, how do you utilize it in your current setup? [06:14] JACK is at the centre [06:14] fschoep, this is sounding more and more like an interview :p [06:14] Oh, I'm sorry :) [06:14] heheh [06:14] I j/k [06:14] I thought you might enjoy talking about your setup :) [06:14] Of course [06:14] it's much smaller than it used to be [06:15] my studio used to be worth about 6000 [06:15] but it's scattered about now [06:15] I'm not used to using Linux for audio, so I'm interested in your experiences. [06:15] well, tbh, apart fro the VERY occasional crash [06:16] it's very very stable [06:16] as you saw I even made one of my sounds completely on my laptop [06:16] on a train [06:16] multitrack playback on a train :p [06:16] :) [06:16] at the moment [06:16] I have my Korg X5D [06:16] which goes into a MidiSport 2x2 [06:17] and then goes itno the USB [06:17] OK [06:17] JACK also handles all my midi connections [06:17] I can route any input from one to any output to another [06:18] although the midi is handled by ALSA I believe, JACK does a really good job of interfacing [06:18] you can save you setups/patchbay arrangements in JACK [06:18] to be recalled later [06:18] OK, nice feature [06:18] which is handy if you're working on one project a lot [06:18] but it's jus thte shear flexability that the conecpt offers [06:18] I used Jack's MIDI capabilities to power QSynth (ring a bell?) [06:18] yes [06:19] I use ZynAddSubFX [06:19] The Wiki link :) [06:19] which is cool, but you must modprobe snd_seq first [06:19] else it'll crash [06:19] and it doesn't run on AMD64 at all :p [06:19] I didn't look into ZynAddSubFX earlier, but it looks very promising [06:19] it's a nice synth [06:20] The sounds you are using, are those mixed from the Korg and ZynAddSubFX? [06:20] it has a virtual keyboard which is playable via your computer keyboard [06:20] mainly from the Korg tbh [06:20] :) [06:20] I find the Zyn sounds good, but harsh [06:20] very fast attacks [06:20] whcih are nice from some applications, and indeed I could go in and change them [06:21] I see. Do you -by chance- have the "Dragon's World" synth on the Korg :) ? [06:21] but why, when the Korg is sitting there with some lovely sounds [06:21] cbx33: I'll hook up my old Mac OS 9 [06:21] hang on.....lemme see [06:21] nice msikma [06:21] They are pretty neat sounds. I also had one notably well-done Star Trek sound theme :-) [06:21] Anyway, going home now, see you later... [06:21] see ya msikma [06:21] bye Michiel [06:21] fschoep, no [06:22] I don't seem to have that one [06:22] Heh, no problem, we used that one on my band's first demo :) [06:22] :( [06:22] ah coool [06:22] there probaly is a reincarnation of it [06:22] under a different name [06:22] I think so, audio stuff generally seems to have lots of legacy sounds in newer gear. [06:22] the X5D has tonnes of sounds...but is a complete synth so I can create my own too [06:22] Oh, that's neat [06:23] fschoep, there is one sound...<> which can be used to play the treehouse tune from themepark [06:23] and I mean almost exactly [06:23] it's scarily close [06:23] Hehe :) [06:23] Scary in itself [06:23] hehe [06:23] When you record stuff, do you record MIDI or audio? I'd guess the latter? [06:23] I tend at the moment to use audio [06:24] I wondered, because Ardour doesn't do MIDI :) [06:24] purely because I know what keys I've pressed and it's not hard to remember [06:24] True [06:24] but I have used rosegarden [06:24] to record the midis [06:24] and then bounced that to audio and muted the midi track [06:24] so I can go back and modify if needs be [06:24] fschoep, [06:24] I see. [06:24] yes - [06:25] http://progbox.co.uk/music [06:25] some old tracks I did [06:25] old old [06:25] if I were doing ones like that [06:25] I'd use rosegarden a lot [06:25] Hang on, I'll fire up a song [06:25] hehe [06:25] syberiority [06:26] that's probably one of the best [06:26] 09 [06:26] hehe [06:26] and if you dare to hear me sing [06:26] "The One" [06:26] OK, I took 09 [06:26] Sounds like an acoustic guitar [06:26] ok, first bit of guitar I ever recorded into PC [06:26] took me 37 takes [06:27] Wow [06:27] then i realised the guitar was out of tune [06:27] 5 takes later I had it :p [06:27] Out of tune guitars are bad [06:27] heheh [06:27] Especially if you can't do a retake as the musicians have gone home. [06:27] it was when the rest of the song was already recorded :p [06:27] hehe [06:27] well all that stuff was me solo :p [06:27] :) [06:27] The drums, they're MIDI I guess? [06:27] apart from one solo on one track [06:28] unfortunately yes [06:28] I could have done them a lot better now [06:28] I do actually play drums [06:28] I like the sound of the drums a lot, but they are quite "clean" in a way. [06:28] yes [06:29] So, you play the guitar, keys and drums? Anything else :) ? [06:29] um, bass sometimes, piano if you count that as a seperate instrument [06:29] that's abotu it [06:29] heheh [06:29] oh and I sing badly :p [06:30] I kind of count bass under guitars and piano under keys :) Same interfaces [06:30] indeed [06:30] I really must learn a wind instrument at some time [06:30] I think that would rock [06:30] I can only play the guitar and a bit of keys [06:30] I mean the other amazing thing about linux, is that I can keep IRC web brwoser etc open [06:30] and still record multitrack audio [06:31] :) That's nice, really. [06:31] logic would have died trying to do that on my old pc [06:31] I used to have to keep that pc sooooo clean [06:31] I can imagine [06:31] Did you have dedicated hardware? [06:31] i had a pc running win98 [06:32] dual booted with ME [06:32] and installed ONLY logic [06:32] Oh dear, Windows ME, everybody RUN! [06:32] exactly [06:32] ME was the only way to get my second midibox running [06:32] driver issue [06:32] That's pretty bad, since ME was probably the worst Windows version ever. [06:32] I also had/have a 12 track akai dps 12i multitrack recorder [06:33] which was nice for long audio takes like vocals [06:33] (by the way, you're singing's not too bad, mine's far worse) [06:33] haha [06:33] "The One"? [06:33] Yup [06:33] probaly my singing at it's best [06:33] i wrote and recorded that one for my wife [06:33] who was my fiancee at the time :p [06:33] hehe [06:33] That's cute :) [06:34] Don't give up man, I'm pretty sure you can improve with some more practice. Me, however, I can really not sing even with lessons :) [06:34] heheh [06:34] I'm not too worried about singing [06:34] I'll let my guitar do the talking. [06:35] I used to write all the vocal lines when I played in a punk band [06:35] I played drums but wrote all the vocals heheh [06:35] :( [06:35] fschoep, you a mean guitarist? [06:35] Oh :) [06:35] That :( smiley got in there erroneously [06:35] heheh [06:35] No I'm not mean, I'm quite a cosy person [06:35] hehe [06:35] what type of guitar you play? [06:35] No, I can play the guitar but I'm not mean [06:36] I play a Telecaster [06:36] oooh [06:36] with distortion? [06:36] A tiny bit [06:36] heheh [06:36] And LOOOOOTS of delay [06:36] Marshall Jackhammer, best pedal I ever purchased :p [06:36] Know The Edge from U2? [06:36] fschoep, oooh, I love playing guitar with delay [06:36] That's me, in a nutshell. [06:36] very very soothing [06:36] heheh [06:37] I use it for rhythmic effects, like I play dah-dah-dah [06:37] you can just pick random notes and it still sounds ace [06:37] yup I know exactly what you mean [06:37] And then the delay makes it sound like dah-digga-dag-digga-dah [06:37] used that quite a lot in these ubuntu sounds [06:37] Wait, I've got something funny which you probably already know [06:37] one particualr zyn sound had a nice delay on iy [06:37] fschoep, you got a blog?
