Something that talks about syncing configs, binaries, accounts, etc? [04:11] I realize thin clients would be much easier, but I don't have a powerful enough server, and the machines are good enough to run on their own. [04:12] toddobryan: Are you talking about simply setting up (n) copies of edubuntu, and having them look all the same? [04:13] That and having them stay in sync. [04:13] If I realize that I need to modify something, I don't want to do it 30 times. [04:13] Like adding a bookmark to the default Firefox or something. [04:13] Simplest to that would be to have the not-too-powerful server be an nfs and ldap server. That way you'll have shared home directories, and common login authentication. [04:14] OK. That's what I've been leaning toward. [04:15] I also thought about a cron script that rsync large parts of /etc, /usr, etc., on boot. With a command that students could run to do it manually if needed. [04:15] Well, that's not easy, even on a thin client. Remember: every user has their own home directory, so if you want to automatically add a bookmark to everyone's setup, one way or the other, you'll have a bunch of accounts to set up. Simplest is to set up a webpage/portal that has the common links, etc, and set everyones homepage to that. [04:16] Is there anything like All Users on Windows, or does that not exist? [04:17] Not really. The tighter security model for Linux makes that a touger thing to do. [04:18] You're right, though. A web page with all the links is probably the best way to go. [04:18] I can even make it local on the nfs mount. [04:19] I assume I can create a /home/share folder that's world readable, but only-me writable. [04:19] Yup, that's easy enough to do. [04:21] OK. So I guess I should figure this out and make a Wiki page.
