LaserJockheh, at this point if edgy boots, I have all my partitions, and X works I'm happy ;-)12:10
buzzenLaserJock: I had a look already for some bugs about fonts. Couldnt find one specific to Edgy. Only old dapper ones.12:10
Riddellbuzzen: there is a problem, I don't know if it's kde's fault of fontconfig but it's on my list of things to look at12:12
buzzenRiddell: ok thanks. that's good  (that there is a problem.) . I was worried this was the new look! :)12:12

LaserJockah yes, homework04:13
=== LaserJock remembers those days ;-)
LaserJockHobbsee: are you doing a double major?04:14
HobbseeLaserJock: nope04:15
HobbseeLaserJock: bachelor of technology in optoelectronics, which includes first year C++04:15
LaserJockhmm, seems like a lot of CS for optoelectronics04:15
LaserJockI'll make it through a PhD in Physical Chemistry without ever taking a CS class04:16
Hobbseeheh04:18
crimsunthat's impressive, considering CS students here have to take one year of chem.04:18
LaserJockyeah04:18
LaserJockthe feeling isn't mutual apparently04:18
LaserJockI never did any CS as an undergrad either04:19
crimsunI'm of the opinion that any science needs to take one year of intro programming04:19
LaserJockyes, I totally agree04:19
LaserJockI tried to get my advisor to let me take a Fortran class04:19
LaserJockbut no luck04:19
=== Hobbsee likes CS
LaserJockI would have liked to do CS too, but I was already doing 2 majors04:21
LaserJockunfortunately right now I see many chemistry going away from programming and just using proprietary software04:22
LaserJocks/chemistry/chemists/04:22
crimsunproprietary or not, it's still a requisite skill.04:23
LaserJockI think I'm 1 of maybe 3-5 grad student in a deparment of 60 that can program really at all04:23
LaserJocka number of the profs (especially < 40 years old) can program but then don't see it as a needed skill anymore04:25
crimsunthat's akin to saying technical writing & calculus aren't requisite skills in the natural sciences.04:27
LaserJockwell, I have a hard time making that argument in chemistry04:28
LaserJockit's pretty standard in physics04:28
nixternalyou have a hard time making an argument ;)04:28
LaserJockbut chemistry profs look at the expense of paying a grad student to program or get research done04:29
LaserJockand most of the time they aren't willing to pay for their students to program04:29
LaserJockthe time expenditure is too much04:29
crimsunthat's because they're raised [in the system]  to look at things like this from a narrow perspective.04:29
crimsunit's what happens when your university doesn't _force_ you to consider breadth alongside depth04:30
Hobbseedamn @ bug 5763604:31
UbugtuMalone bug 57636 in amarok "amarok_libvisual helper executable missing from Amarok package" [Low,Unconfirmed]  http://launchpad.net/bugs/5763604:31
LaserJocksure, all that matters is that I pump out papers as fast as I can04:31
LaserJockI'm already starting my 5th year and I still don't have a paper04:32
crimsunnot just, but you need to pull in massive amounts of funding AND maintain a credible skillset evaluation so that your dept's curriculum remains top-notch04:32
LaserJockat this point it is very hard for me to tell my boss "let me take a month and fix our data aqcuisition program"04:32
crimsunget an interested (aka starving) CS student to do it.04:33
LaserJockor pay the $1000 to buy the program04:33
LaserJockthe problem is that most profs see FLOSS as just a monetary thing04:35
LaserJockand since they just pass the money on to the funding agency it doesn't bother them04:36
LaserJockok, I'll try here04:39
LaserJockin KDE my laptop is randomly hibernating04:39
LaserJockit is plugged in and at ~100% power04:40
LaserJockanybody heard of that?04:40
