micahcowancarthik, what is the benefit of rejecting a bug after marking it a dupe? Doesn't marking it a dupe, in itself, hide it from search results, etc?10:04
micahcowanI saw you just duped and rejected 61510, and I just duped (but didn't reject) 61509.10:04
dholbachmicahcowan: it's a decision the desktop team made10:07
dholbachmicahcowan: and I think 'rejected' is a valid status for such a bug10:07
dholbachin bugzilla they are marked as "RESOLVED DUPLICATE"10:07
micahcowandholbach, I agree that it's a valid status for such a bug. What I actually want to know is, how important is it for me, when marking a bug as a dupe, to also reject it?10:09
dholbachnobody forces you to do it10:09
carthikmicahcowan, actually I wanted to add a comment telling the OP to follow up on the other bug. Since I was gonna leave a comment anyway - I also changed the status. This is okay for some teams/developers, but some like duplicates to not be rejected. I don't know if it is still the same, but once upon a time, firefox crash bugs used to be rejected and then the reporter was asked to submit debug logs etc if she had them (that is strange, IM10:09
carthikHO) but this told me they are not averse to closing a bug as rejected.10:09
carthikmicahcowan, I did it now since I am mildly distracted, and in verbose mode :)10:10
dholbachyou will also find that many users don't read the "this bug is a dup of ...." message :)10:10
carthikI don't generally reject dupes10:10

Burgworkah, that crack10:43
carthikseb128, http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/g/gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg/gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.1-2ubuntu1/changelog says there was a fix for " + Disable the broken demuxers for now as they only cause problems" on a date that is more than a month form when you said the fix was committed upstream...10:43
seb128carthik: we would require a new upstream version to get new code, that bug is not fixed probably10:44
carthikthank you, seb12810:44
seb128np10:44
seb128thank you for the bug triage work ;)10:44
carthikthank you for sweating it out over these bugs - I'll get there someday :)10:45

=== trappist cancels a verbose bug report
micahcowanwas it the old_versions method?10:53
trappistmicahcowan: yes10:54
micahcowantrappist, that's just been fixed, AIUI.10:54
trappistit must have, because my python-central can't be more than a few hours old10:54

carthikDo I reject a backport request after I point out how to request a backport to the user, or do I leave the bug report open?11:01
dholbachwhat do you mean?11:02
carthikdholbach, Bug #61524 -> I think I have to ask the person to request a backport for ion3 in dapper. After I let him/her know how to do that, should I close the bug as "rejected"?11:02
UbugtuMalone bug 61524 in ion3 "ion3 outdated in dapper" [Untriaged,Unconfirmed]  http://launchpad.net/bugs/6152411:02
carthikOr do I just subscribe the backporters as the wiki page suggests and leave it as is? (sorry if this is a basic question)11:03
dholbachfor that specific case the problem is: we can only backport the current version11:04
dholbachnot a random version that might have been in edgy at some stage11:04
micahcowancarthik, I would reject it. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses has a boilerplate response for backports, which includes the phrase "I'm closing this bug because..." ^_^11:04
dholbachso the task would be to find a patch to fix his problem and to upload it via dapper-updates11:05
carthikoh so it is a regular bug. Thanks dholbach11:05

seb128dholbach: :)11:06
micahcowandholbach, wow. What does saying that do?11:06
micahcowannothing?11:06
crimsunit would be awesome if we could say Ubugtu: bug 34 dupe 3311:06
crimsunand have 34 marked as a dupe of 3311:07
micahcowanThat might be worth implementing.11:07
seb128I'm not for it11:07
crimsunnor am I, too much room for abuse11:07
seb128and better to add a comment11:07
trappistlp doesn't let you comment on dupage11:08
seb128I'm not sure than users understand the dup mail other way11:08
trappisthave to comment separately11:08
seb128no, but usually I do mark it as rejected with a comment11:08
seb128and then dup it11:08
trappist(which should probably be filed as an lp bug)11:08
micahcowanseb128, yes, but the comment could be boilerplate, typically. But we'd need to link folks' registered IRC handles with their launchpad accts, for accountability's sake.11:08
seb128I think lp should just add the standard dup comment when dupping11:08
trappistseb128: that sounds like a good idea11:08
micahcowanseb128, not a bad idea. It should be overrideable, though.11:08
gnomefreakor atleast a reason section on the dups marking page11:09
seb128yeah, like a checkbox to use it, or a text entry prefiled11:09
seb128bugzilla.gnome have standard actions like that11:09
trappistor click here to override the default comment with a custom one11:09
=== pepsiman suggests greasemonkey
trappistseb128: sounds an awful lot nicer than bugs.kde.org11:10
seb128clicking on dup add the standard dup reply to the comment entry and select the corresponding settings, you just have to enter the num of the dup11:10
micahcowanI like the prefilled text entry better11:10
