[05:54] yes [05:54] or edgy knot 3? [05:54] sudo apt-get install powernowd; hopefully its already installed [05:54] never even heard of edgy knot3 [05:54] edgy is the next version in development [05:56] no It's the last stable release I have installed....and installing powernowd app now [05:56] im curious how you managed to get ubuntu-desktop without powernowd [05:57] it says cpufrequency scaling not supported when the daemon started. [05:58] ah. [05:58] powernowd supports anything that uses the cpufreq driver [05:58] maybe you need cpufreqd [05:59] that doesnt sound better though =/ [05:59] No cpufreq interface found, not starting cpufreqd. [06:00] well, maybe try putting in the cpufreq drivers [06:00] modprobe cpufreq [06:00] it's weird cause it's hot too. Hotter than I would expect especially with the reduced cpu output. It's running at 52 right now and has been up to 60C. That's what originally got me looking into the power and cpu settings [06:01] i imagine its hot because either the fan is off or the cpu is running at top speed [06:02] fan doesn't kick in that' I've noticed. Or it's super quiet. [06:02] did you put in any kernel boot options like noacpi? [06:03] should still be visible in grub boot options? not that I remember but I chose mostly defaults on install [06:04] yea, menu.lst would be a good place to double check [06:05] only ro quiet splash [06:06] try "sudo modprobe cpufreq_userspace" [06:07] ran with no output $?=0 [06:07] now try to run powernowd [06:08] /etc/init.d/powernowd restart [06:08] daemon started that time [06:09] you have the cpufreq applet going? [06:10] yes but they seem to be non responsive now. right click on the temp and cpu applet in the panel and no responce [06:11] yea, probably should have killed them before the modprobe [06:11] well, just kill em off now [06:11] looking now [06:12] then readd em and see what the speed is reporting [06:12] re-add [06:13] will /proc/cpuinfo report the same? [06:13] no [06:13] that appears to be calculated at startup [06:14] at which point a) you cant have scale it down and b) you wouldn't want to anyways [06:14] on applet launch "CPU frequency scaling unsuported. you will not be able to modify...your machine may be misconfigured or not have hardware support for frequency scaling [06:17] im really not an expert at this stuff. i just got in a toshiba of my own two weeks ago [06:19] temp has dropped a bit lately but the load is light on it right now [06:19] you can also load in the module cpufreq_conservative [06:19] what's that? [06:20] its another governor [06:21] userspace lets a userspace program decide what the power should be, where it can consider things like how long its been since the last switch, how busy the system is, what the other processors (should you have smp) are doing, etc [06:21] conservative just drops to lowest [06:21] ok cool [06:22] but you need to set cpufreq to use it [06:22] i thought the interface was somewhere in /proc [06:27] hmm [06:35] cant find anything in /proc/ =( try "cpufreq-selector conservative" [06:36] no cpufreq support [06:38] at this point, i suggest filing a bug on launchpa [06:38] launchpad [06:39] ok. Thanks for the help. [06:39] still working out some of the finer points of system config [06:40] yea, it can be interesting some times ;) [06:40] ive got a tecra m7 tablet. it almost works [06:41] almost works out of the box or after some work? [06:42] had to install wacom-tools [06:42] then it worked [06:42] almost [06:42] there's a few interesting problems though [06:42] you on the dev team? [06:42] GNOME doesnt seem to recognize right click [06:43] and if you convert the laptop to tablet mode, the input is broken. [06:43] what if you use a usb mouse still has problems? [06:43] the mouse works fine [06:43] its the tablet part [06:43] and probably no OCR [06:43] yea [06:44] there's also a thumbprint scanner [06:44] i'll need to dig into that some more as well. [06:44] any support for the thumb reader? [06:44] im not on a dev "team" at the moment [06:44] apparently some think pads use a fingerprint scanner [06:44] from the same company: UPEK [06:44] ya good luck getting drives though [06:44] and they work in linux with some work [06:45] but they're not common enough [06:45] its really slick though. you set it up in pam, and whenever it would for a password, can swipe your thumb [06:45] sudo apt-get install new-toy [06:46] [06:48] alright well thanks for the help.
