whurleyhi all, we're (the Open Management Consortium) evaluating Ubuntu Server and having some issues installing it on our servers. I thought perhaps someone here could help us out. 01:43
whurleythe issue: when installing onto boxes supplied to us by Penguin Computing (dual opteron 248s 4GB ram 300GB hd) the amd 64 bit Ubuntu cd boots up fine but freezes right after the "io scheduler cfg registered" and right before where the kernel should be loaded into the ram disk. We're tried several boot options and other tricks and tips but nothing works. Any suggestions? 01:45

nictukuhi03:50
nictukuI'm building a test platform for nwu using pbuilder.03:58
nictukuone of the tasks is to do retake the tests Junichi Uekawa was doing for Debian03:59
nictukuso I can check how every package deal with non-interactive installation03:59
nictukumaybe I'll be able to build a 'blacklist' of packages that nwu shouldn't touch04:00
nictukuquestion is, is there any kind of batch mass-install test currently in production, maybe internally?04:02
ajmitchnictuku: piuparts04:06
ajmitchit was designed more for testing installs, compared to pbuilder which was for building04:06

nictukuajmitch, so I lost a couple hours of work to do what piuparts does better :-)04:11
ajmitchat least it was hours, not days :)04:12
ajmitchiwj *may* have some automated testing stuff done04:12
ajmitchwhich he was going to do with xen, iirc04:12
nictukuthanks, I'll investigate04:13

\shhmm...splash enabled kernels (from dapper) are not working with the ilo software of HP BLade bl35p11:44
infinityErr, you're not actually trying to boot with a splash over ilo?11:45
maswan\sh: even when booting nosplash (or whatever it is called)?11:47
maswanand isnt the server kernel nonsplashy by default even?11:48
\shmaswan: no...without the splash setting it works perfectly11:48
\shmaswan: no...and that's somehow strange11:48
infinityTHe server kernel can do splash just as well as any, but the server install doesn't install usplash (hence you'd never get a splash)11:49
\shinfinity: then something is wrong with my 6.06 server cd11:49
infinityOh, but there may well be a bug in initramfs-tools where it'll load vga16fb for your console if "splash" is on the command line, even if there's no usplash.11:49
infinityISTR that was a "too late to fix" issue that we left alone.11:49
\shI just did an dist-upgrade for all sec updates and it installs the 2.6.25-27 kernel with the splash option11:50
infinityJust whack "splash" out of your grub config and you'll be forever happy.11:50
\shwhat about new kernels to come? the grub config is added from the kernel package, or am I wrong?11:51
infinityIt's not so much a bug as a misfeature.  Nothing wrong with having a framebuffer console by default.. Except that ILO hates it.11:51
infinity\sh: Change #def11:52
\shgrmpf...got the setting for update-grub11:52
infinityErr.11:52
infinityChange "# defoptions" in menu.lst, then run update-grub.11:52
\shjepp11:52
\shinfinity: btw, do you know anyone who installed an oracle 10g on dapper?11:52
infinityNot off hand, no.11:53
fabbione\sh: somebody installed the express version available as .deb from oracle.com11:56
fabbionebut i don't know about the full version11:56
\shfabbione: that's my question...I'm planning a switch of distros here at combots from sles9 to ubuntu dapper...the only problem I have right now is to convience the management, that we also can use ubuntu dapper server 6.06 tls as oracle server ,-)11:57
=== mark [i=mark@tilia.nedworks.org] has left #ubuntu-server []
fabbione\sh: now i have a question for you... given that i told you that there is a .deb from oracle for oracle DB (in a ligher version of the full one) and that we do officially support OCFS2.. what's the answer to your question?12:01
\shfabbione: the answer is yes, but my problem is "Official Oracle Certificaton for Ubuntu Dapper", management shit 12:08
fabbioneno Oracle doesn't support Ubuntu yet12:09

whurleyHas anyone here ever looked at/used openQRM (http://openQRM.org) 04:11
whurleyI;m the project lead and I'd like to ind a way to get it integrated with the server build since the software is production quality and has a ton of automation features that I think would be useful to people deploying Ubuntu server in their data centers 04:12
=== pygi looks
whurleyI'm trying to work on testing it myself here at the OMC (open management consortium) however, I still can't get Ubuntu server installed on the boxes we have (frustrating) 04:13
lionelpwhurley: the topic has come into discussion somes times here, but I am not aware of any effort for packaging it04:14
lionelpwhurley: as you (may or may not) know, today is a freeze day for Ubuntu (freeze for next release in october)04:14
whurleywell, I would be more than happy to start a systems mgmt team to take it, and other projects within the OMC and pkg them up 04:14
lionelpso now, integrating new software will be for Edgy+104:15
whurleylionelp: I wasn't aware, sorry I'm fairly new to Ubuntu in general 04:15
lionelpdo not be sorry: you're welcome !04:15
whurleylol04:15
whurleythanks04:15
whurleywell, setting a solid plan to integrate with Edgy+1 is no issue 04:15
whurleythe software is pretty popular and there's a good community around it 04:16
whurleywhat are the milestones/dates around Edgy+1? 04:16
lionelpit is not planed yet04:16
whurleyso perfect timing huh? :)04:16
lionelpedgy+1 will be released in april 2007, that all what we know :)04:17
whurleywell, I'll see what I can pull together, perhaps finding a few people in the community to release a .deb (or whatever is required) would be a good first step 04:17
lionelp(a release every six moth)04:17
lionelpwhurley: do you have some sort of package or not yet ?04:18
whurleyso can you help me with my installation issue here? Or should I go to a different channel (none have been too helpful so far) 04:18
lionelpwhurley: this is not a support channel, but when the question is server related, it can be answered here :)04:18
whurleylionelp: we've had community contributors create a few .debs however they haven't been through nay testing04:19
whurleyCool! 04:19
lionelpwhurley: were are the deb ?04:19
=== lionelp wants to test :)
whurleylionelp: Here is the issue I'm having trouble with. When installing onto boxes supplied to us by Penguin Computing (dual opteron 248s 4GB ram 300GB hd) the amd 64 bit Ubuntu cd boots up fine but freezes right after the "io scheduler cfg registered" and right before where the kernel should be loaded into the ram disk. We're tried several boot options and other tricks and tips but nothing works. Any suggestions?04:19
whurleylionelp: I tried several different boot options, and everything I could find in the forums but I have to think there's something simple that can help me get this installed. The OMC (http://openmanagement.org) is building a new data center and we'd like to std. on Ubuntu server...if I can get us past step #1 :) 04:22
lionelpwhurley: which cd are you using ? Dapper server CD ?04:23
whurleylionelp: ubuntu-6.06.1-server-amd64.iso  04:24
whurleylionelp: it boots fine, the memory test, etc work however I have that freeze wen trying to install 04:25
whurleylionelp: just a note, the result is the same across all of the boxes and we re-burned the CD to make sure there wasn't any corruption issues04:25
lionelpOKay04:25
whurleylionelp: I'm at my wits end because I'm not sure what I can change that will get us up and running and we'd like to announce what server we've selected at ApacheCon here in Austin on the 9th04:27
lionelpCould you post a bug on malone ? You will have the good intrelocutors.04:27
lionelpI am not strong enough04:27
whurleylionelp: no worries no one has been so far :)04:28
whurleylionelp: we have several people here looking at it and Canonical, AMD and Penguin are trying to help with the issue...just no one has so far ;)04:29
