whurleyis there an easy way to update ubuntu-server 5.10 to the latest version? 07:04
whurley(sorry new to server) 07:04
infinitysed -i -e "s/breezy/dapper/" /etc/apt/sources.list && apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade07:05
whurleythanks so much 07:11
whurleyI'm still fighting the amd dual proc dapper issues 07:11
whurleybut wanting to install the previous version (if that works) and then upgrade to see if that's a work around 07:11
infinity"the amd dual proc dapper issue"?07:13
whurleywe're testing Dapper as the "os of choice" for the Open Management Consortium 07:13
whurleyhowever, we've been running into an issue that looks like this 07:14
whurleythe install cd (amd64 version) boots fine and displays the install choices. However, when you select any install option, with any boot options that have been suggested (and there have been many) then it freezes right after "io scheduler cfg registered" and right before where the kernel gets loaded into the ram disk 07:15
whurleythe servers we're deploying look like this:07:16
infinityCurious.  And I assume there's a bug filed about this?07:16
whurleyPenguin Computing Altus 1300s Dual AMD 248s with Northbridge, 4GB ram and 300GB drives 07:16
whurleywell, no not that I found 07:17
whurleyI also thought it coule be us 07:17
whurley:)07:17
whurleyI personally wonder it is something with the mem controller 07:17
infinityWell, it could be, but if it's us, it would be nice for you to file a bug and work on resolving it, rather than just assuming it'll stay broken. :)07:17
whurleysince it dies right as the ramdisk is starting 07:17
whurleyoh 07:17
whurleydon't worry 07:17
whurleyI would have already dumped this distro 2 days ago under normal circumstances 07:18
whurleyI have been documenting everything tried 07:18
whurleyand we're systematically trying to find the cause :)07:18
whurleywe want to start a systems management team 07:19
infinityAnyhow, the next thing after registering the I/O schedulers appears ot be ACPI probes.07:20
infinitySo, if I had to take a short in the dark, I'd guess some IOAPIC/ACPI mangling, either on the kernel command line or in the BIOS, will probably clear you up.07:20
whurleyso that the OMC can build on top of the OEM version of ubuntu server and create a systems mgmt stack 07:20
whurley:)07:20
whurleynope07:20
infinityBut talking to BenC (in a bug report, ideally, or in #ubuntu-kernel) will get you further than talking to me.07:20
whurleywe tried...07:20
whurleynoapic nolapic apci=off07:21
whurleyand the google of other options :)07:21
whurleylol07:21
whurleyI'll see if Ben is online 07:22
whurleyInfinity, one more question 07:37
whurleyactually, never mind07:37
=== infinity never minds.

ajmitchyes, that's being done08:21
gururugsweet08:25
infinityExcept not with scripts.08:25
infinityYou can choose a LAMP install from the installer.08:25
infinityOr later with tasksel.08:25
gururugahh..08:25
gururugwhat's the recommended deployment method for ubuntu in the enterprise, http?08:26
gururugis there an easy way to get a udpcast gui installed with apt / dpkg?08:27
gururugsorry, what i really mean is, distro-specific, gui service configuration tools will attract users to ubuntu.09:00

whurleyRies: and there were no install issues? I'm having a freeze right after "io scheduler cfg registered" and right before the ramdisk loads. I've tried boot options, etc. but have found nothing that will get me past that point. So you use the Northbrige in your server? Perhaps there are some bios settings that should be adjusted. All I know is that I'm starting to get desperate for help :)08:32
lionelpwhurley: did you open a bug ?08:33
whurleydocumenting for that now...where should it be posted? 08:33
