[10:29] ksnpshot [10:30] but the brightness probably are. [10:31] matt8806suomi: my problem is that after wake up, if my laptop wake up and :) some times he did, the fan dotn start up === mdke_ [n=matt@ubuntu/member/mdke] has joined #ubuntu-laptop [10:36] bugger, can't help you much there, sorry Infecto [10:51] anyone know what are some battery extending tweaks for ubuntu [10:53] i know a few [10:53] edgy should make it easier to figure out which ones work [10:53] i have dapper [10:54] but first off, make sure dynamic frequency scaling is working [10:55] i don't know the first thing about "dynamic frequency scaling". could you please enlighten me [10:55] ok, you've probably got something like a 2.2 ghz cpu in your laptop, right? [10:56] well, running that high takes a lot of energy, and produces a lot of heat (meaning more fans going) [10:56] "dynamic frequency scaling" (cpufreq) lets your laptop clock down and run slower [10:56] cuts energy consumption, and reduces temperature [10:57] nope just a 1.6 with 512 ddr2 600 [10:58] how long is your battery lasting? [10:59] about 140mins [10:59] another thing you can do is make the screen darker on battery [10:59] that's with AIGLX running all the time [10:59] the LCD backlight is probably the hungriest part of it [11:00] gnome 2.16's power management has a nifty graph of power usage [11:00] i have that setup. when i unplug the power cable the screen brightness drops [11:01] the darker you set it, the longer it will last [11:01] yeah of course [11:01] that makes sense [11:01] ati or nvidia? [11:01] i have Gnome 2.14.3, how do i get to 1.16 [11:02] easiest way is to wait until edgy is released in a few weeks [11:02] Mobile Intel 915GM [11:02] huh [11:02] what's with the huh? [11:03] those aren't very powerful 3d [11:03] might try turning off aiglx and see how much longer the battery lasts [11:03] 10-15 mins longer [11:04] but yet even then, it still isn't anywhere near the 4.5 i get from windows [11:04] you have any bluetooth running? [11:05] wireless occasionally but not all the time, ow and i don't have bluetooth! well i don't think i do [11:06] how would i go about upgrading to Gnome 2.16 now? [11:12] you there jldugger? [11:15] yea, sorry. roommates cleaned out the freezer [11:15] had to double check that nothing of mine would melt [11:15] anyways, upgrading gnome is a pita [11:16] nah that's cool [11:16] your 3 options are to install from source, attempt to backport the edgy packages, or upgrade [11:17] what do you recommend, i'm thought about upgrade [11:18] well, compiling gnome from source is a complicated effort and you still wont have all the ubunbut modifications, for better or worse, so i cant recommend that path [11:19] backporting from edgy will require at least a rebuild of the packages for the dapper libc stuff, and there's no guarentee you'll be able to fix it all, or get any help [11:19] the least painful would be upgrading to edgy [11:19] i might try that [11:20] if i were you id hit up launchpad and check to see if your laptop has any known bugs [11:21] http://www.linuxsymposium.org/2006/linuxsymposium_procv1.pdf [11:26] p127 has some discussion on what improves battery life [11:36] thanks [11:38] id also wonder whether windows actually gets four hours of use [11:41] web and word, that's all that is done in windows [11:42] lowest lcd brightness, cpu frequence changing [11:42] ow btw how do i setup cpu throttling [11:49] its probably running right now [11:49] you in GNOME? [11:49] yes, thats right you said you were [11:50] right click on the gnome panel and add a "CPU Frequncy Monitor" applet [11:52] that should indicate whether its running or not [11:53] yeah i'm in Gnome [11:54] yeah i can add the applet but it says that my pc does not have the functions enabled? [11:54] what next? [11:55] /etc/init.d/powernowd start [11:58] it says it's not supported but i had it in 5.1, then i upgraded to 6.01 and gooooone!! [11:58] ?? [11:58] what's going on? [11:58] you might need a module in the kernel [11:59] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MataroSessionsWorkshops/CPUFreqModuleLoading
