[09:11] sorry, i meant edgy [09:12] Misconfigured in what way? [09:12] first of all [09:12] both dapper and edgy select vesa as the video driver [09:12] in dapper this works [09:12] etchy *runs for the hills* [09:12] in edgy it just freezes x on startup [09:13] What video hardware does it have? [09:13] they should be selecting trident [09:13] If you select trident, does it work? [09:13] yes [09:13] Ok. So that's easy enough to fix. [09:14] there is a bigger problem [09:14] xorg in edgy is broken for trident [09:14] so it does work well enough to login [09:14] In what way? [09:14] but when you move windows around or scroll [09:14] blitting seems to be broken [09:14] (exa?) [09:14] so the display of that window gets garbled [09:14] this is a regression in xorg i assume [09:15] Quite likely [09:15] are you bug databases linked in any ways? [09:15] or should i be filing separately with them? [09:15] File separately with them, we can link the bugs [09:15] ok [09:15] also, due to stupid bugs in trident driver [09:16] should be booting with vga=791 [09:16] mjg59: did you ever see the crackful Ati stuff from my laptop? [09:16] judge: Uh. [09:16] judge: We can't do that. [09:16] otherwise if you close the lid, the x res screws up [09:16] and you have to switch to/from x [09:16] to fix it [09:16] Sorry, we'll have to fix the X driver [09:16] ok [09:16] Treenaks: Yes [09:16] well switch it to use trident instead of vesa for now [09:16] afaik, the trident driver also has Xv crappiness going on [09:17] yes [09:17] xv doesnt work :) [09:17] mjg59: Dave Airlie asked me to mail him my video bios... I'm waiting for him to parse it now.. [09:17] at least in dapper..didnt get far enough in edgy [09:17] judge: it works, but it crashes, on a friend's laptop [09:17] ah, i just get a blue screen in the window [09:18] anyways, what can i do to make sure that my laptop works in edgy at least as well as it does in dapper? [09:18] judge: The hotkeys fix has just been submitted [09:19] Which will possibly fix the vesa issue as well (don't ask) [09:19] What does lspci -n give you for the video hardware? [09:20] 0000:01:00.0 0300: 1023:2100 (rev 91) [09:20] Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XP4m32 <--most unlucky video card one could get stuck with [09:21] also unless they fixed stuff in the new xorg [09:21] it would be nice if you could do Option "ShadowFB" "On" [09:22] since the card is unaccelerated [09:22] Seriously? [09:22] Ouch. [09:22] Ok, uploaded a new discover1-data with the card id in [09:22] well the driver for this card i mean [09:22] thanks [09:23] how do i redetect x config? [09:23] err, regenerate [09:23] dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg [09:23] ok [09:23] i'll try that later today [09:23] thanks a lot [09:23] If you enable EXA, does the blitting work? [09:23] i dont know how to enable exa [09:24] Option "AccelMethod" "exa" [09:24] In the device section for the card [09:24] i'll try it [09:24] May or may not help [09:38] dude [09:38] it does work [09:39] the other bug that i found during the install was that it couldn't create xfs partitions [09:39] judge: So it works if you use EXA? [09:39] yes [09:42] And not otherwise? [09:43] right [09:43] Ok [09:43] well i can doublecheck [09:43] let me disable it [09:43] Can you file a bug against xserver-xorg-video-trident and mention that? [09:44] can you make it default to exa for now? [09:44] will do the bugreport [09:45] mjg59, so is the toshiba acpi fix close to working? i just saw a patch last night [09:45] jldugger: Yes [09:45] sweet [09:45] guess i wont reinstall dapper today then ;) [09:46] ok confirmed that it's unusable without exa [09:49] i have another problem [09:49] do you have a workaround for this [09:49] when i try to install fuse [09:49] it gets stuck during configuration stage [09:49] * Reloading kernel event manager... [ ok ] [09:50] No idea, I'm afraid [09:50] But might be related to the hotkeys not working [09:50] seems to get stuck in a modprobe command [09:52] Yeah [09:52] Quite likely to be the hotkey issue [09:54] ok [10:00] what about my left alt key not working? [10:00] ie alt-left doesnt go back [10:00] in the browser [10:00] err..right alt key isnt working..left one is [10:01] is that just a keymap issue? [10:07] ok xv is still broken in the same way as before..but with exa, x11 output methods seem to be efficient enough === Burgundavia [n=corey@ubuntu/member/burgundavia] has joined #ubuntu-laptop === captine [n=capine@dsl-145-200-249.telkomadsl.co.za] has joined #ubuntu-laptop [10:43] hi all. anyone here running 64 bit 6.06 on a turion notebook? [10:53] multibattery stuff is broken too [10:53] if one battery runs out of juice with the other stuff full edgy gets unhappy and tries to hibernate === Altair [i=Altair@edtntnt11-port-90.dial.telus.net] has joined #ubuntu-laptop [11:16] Hey. Just a question. What /is/ Edgy? Like, what does it do special? [11:16] Edgy is what comes after dapper [11:16] like how vista comes after XP [11:17] Ah gotcha. Thanks. [11:17] lemme give you a link explaining what it does special [11:17] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdgyEft/Beta [11:17] Sounds good. [11:20] if you'd like to help out, the first thing to do is probably fill out a Laptop support page on the wiki, describing what works on your model and what doesn't [11:21] Mmkay. [11:23] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ has details on that, if you want. you should probably start with dapper if you've got that running now. [11:26] Heh... I /had/ it running but now I've done a reformat. I plan on running it again though. [11:27] that'd be fantastic, so you can run through the installer again [11:27] which laptop do you have? [11:29] Toshiba Satellite M70. [11:29] ah [11:30] One issue I was having was with wireless networking. It worked fine on networks without passkeys, but when it came to using a network with WEP/WPA or whatever, it simply did not want to connect. [11:30] i think someone else already has that model reported -- all you'd need to do is verify and maybe add some comments ;) [11:30] I couldn't figure out why. In any case, it was a minor issue that was probably my own unfamiliarity. [11:33] edgy is still kinda buggy -- lots of toshiba laptops seem to be having problems. some dont start X; mine does but i cant use the fn keys =/ there's a patch out thats supposed to fix it, hopefully it makes it out soon [11:35] Yeah. Well, with all the people working on it, I'm sure something will get done. [11:35] The beauty of open source. [11:35] sometimes the beauty of open source is that you're the only one with that hardware ;) [11:36] A very good point.
