cypher1i am having problems upgrading from a 2.4 kernel to 2.6.18 kernel. Any help ?12:53
cypher1the kernel panics saying it cannot mount the root filesystem12:54
=== gnomefreak [n=gnomefre@ubuntu/member/gnomefreak] has joined #ubuntu-kernel
Mithrandirneither 2.4 or 2.6.18 is, has been or will ever be supported in Ubuntu.12:54
cypher1why ?12:55
cypher1so does that mean i cannot download and built my own kernel with version 2.6.18 ?12:55
Mithrandir2.4?  Why should it be?  2.6.18?  We're skipping that; edgy was 2.6.17; feisty will be 2.6.2012:55
Mithrandiryou can, but I would recommend against it.  Why do you want to do so?12:55
cypher1Mithrandir: i wanted to learn building it 12:56
cypher1Mithrandir: thanks for the info12:56
Mithrandiryou might want to read the URLs referenced in the topic here.12:56
gnomefreak2.6.19 i thought01:04
gnomefreakatleast that is what it is now01:04
cypher1yes 2.6.19 is in beta i guess01:06
gnomefreakrc5 iirc01:06
cypher1i guess 2.6.12 and later has some issues with loading modules parallely01:07
cypher1gnomefreak: sorry i did not get it01:07
Mithrandirgnomefreak: I said feisty "will be", not "is". :-)01:08
gnomefreakcypher1: if i remember correctly 2.6.19 is in the rc5 stage (in general not in ubuntu)01:08
gnomefreakMithrandir: dont we normally keep the kernel we start with?01:09
gnomefreaklike dapper started with 2.6.15 and ended with it01:09
gnomefreakbreezy - edgy was like that01:09
Mithrandirgnomefreak: BenC said otherwise, iirc01:10
cypher1gnomefreak: but by that would not the kernel would be little out of date when a release comes out ?01:10
gnomefreakrelease == stable not in date or out dated01:11

trappistis edgy's kernel supposed to be preemptible?  I ask because it doesn't seem to be.  mouse and everything get very laggy under heavy i/o load, e.g. when installing packages06:34
dade`trappist: it is06:46
trappistdade`: I see CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set, but CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY and CONFIG_PREEMPT_BLK are y.  mind if I ask what those mean, and how they differ from CONFIG_PREEMPT?06:47
=== dade` [n=dade@nectarine/admin/dade] has joined #ubuntu-kernel
trappistok now I get it - we preempt the big kernel lock (CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL) and we say CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y but there's no /proc/sys/kernel/voluntary_preemption, *and* CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set.  so (please correct me if I'm wrong) only the big kernel lock is preemptible.07:13
=== cmvo [n=cmvo@unaffiliated/cmvo] has joined #ubuntu-kernel
BenCtrappist: correct07:33
trappistBenC: why do we not just say CONFIG_PREEMPT=y07:33
BenCbecomes preempt isn't optimal for a kernel that is supposed to run everywhere07:35
BenCs/becomes/because/07:36
trappistI assume having separate desktop/server kernels has been brought up and shot down07:36
=== sioux [n=sioux@adsl-ull-94-220.42-151.net24.it] has joined #ubuntu-kernel
BenCtrappist: I guess you haven't noticed that we have a separate server and desktop kernel already :)07:38
BenCeven on strictly desktop, preempt has some areas where it caused enough of a problem for enough people that the benfits were outweighed07:39
cmvoBenC: Hi! I know this is devel only, but it there a way to set the sequence drivers are loaded during boot?07:44
BenCcmvo: can you describe your scenario?07:48
BenCI'm actually working on something along those lines, I'd be interested in your use case07:48
cmvoBenC: I've got a system with a ICH6 with 4 SATA HDs connected to it and also a promise SX-207:50
BenCcmvo: So you're concern is just sdX device ordering?07:51
cmvoto which a 5th HD is connected temporarily for backups.07:51
BenCcmvo: you're problem can be solved in other ways, mainly by using UUID instead of the device name, for partitions07:51
=== bernard_ [i=cats@dsl-202-72-159-76.wa.westnet.com.au] has joined #ubuntu-kernel
cmvoWith no HD connected to the SX-2 the four HDs are sda-sdd. With a HD connected to the SX-2 this becomes sda and the others are sdc-sdf07:53
BenCcmvo: Right, you should replace /dev/sdX with UUID=XXXXXXXXXX in fstab and grub's menu.lst07:54
cmvoBenC: Thanks, I'll take a closer look at UUIDs. Guess I've been using static /dev for too long :-) Sorry for bothering you.07:57
