[03:54] where do you guys (ubuntu-chicago) get funding for projects that need money? [03:55] we pitch in [03:55] ah, so it comes out of your pockets? [03:55] i know myself and another member forked out some cash last meeting [03:55] i will probably plan on forking out around $100 for the next meeting as well [03:55] ubuntu-to has only been around for 3 months, and people are constantly bringing up the idea of trying to make it an NPO [03:56] we are doing the same [03:56] but can't because ubuntu is registered [03:56] canonical is the only ones who could do it [03:56] and I keep discouraging it [03:56] you're doing what? [03:57] talking about it? [03:58] trying a not-for-profit [03:58] I think its beyond the scope of a LoCo team to do that [03:58] maybe its just me though [03:58] im sure it is [03:58] but it is the only way to get proper funding for events, meetings and what not [03:58] i can't expect people to keep forking out cash for every little thing we do..it turns people away [03:59] right... but my feeling is that going through the process of registering as an NPO is too much overhead [03:59] its excess work imo [04:00] actually, registering it here in Illinois is free if you take the silly class the state offers [04:00] the crappy part are the tax licenses [04:00] well, I don't mean having to pay for it, I mean all the work that is involved... [04:01] you have to keep track of your finances and report stuff to the goverment and all that [04:01] perhaps creating a separate entity? [04:01] that way, it avoids the 'Ubuntu' trademark.. [04:02] ya, we can't use the Ubuntu trademark in the US [04:02] so you could create a separate entity that works more or less hand-in-hand with your LoCo [04:02] we could [04:02] and call it something like "Chicago Open Source whatever" [04:03] I don't know what you'd call it [04:03] chicago open source initiative? *shrug* [04:04] we could [04:05] might be something worth exploring :) [04:06] anyway I gotta head to bed..I just wanted to pick your brain regarding loco+NPO stuff [04:06] im thinking about bed as well [04:06] im tired [04:06] me too [04:52] yarr [04:52] :] [04:52] poingru: You can away! [12:44] add a writeup to the UWN :) [12:44] also, the posters? [12:45] Admiral_Chicago: yesterday, I met a guy who's starting his own printer, and is interested in making Ubuntu stuff on his own... that means... could be good... [12:45] but he is in it for the money, so maybe not that good. Depends on the prices he ends up doing. [12:46] The thing is, when you buy something from me - you _still_ make profit for some printer, and this way, it could get cheaper. [12:46] for the Ubuntu user. [12:46] well, you could always be competitive [12:46] and he'd lower his prices [12:47] of course - as long as there is cheaper stuff out there, he'd have to go lower. [12:47] But you know - if we didn't like what he's doing, I don't think he'd sell a single thing ;) [12:47] jenda: still have posters? last ? before I say night [12:47] I have to check with jono first.
