[09:49] Lure: I lack the time to keep track of every bug, I'm afraid :) [09:50] Lure: If it's in Launchpad, then yes. If not, then no. [09:50] mjg59: ok, I will check and submit my data [09:51] Lure: No PM stuff other than the kernel has changed, so file it against that [09:51] mjg59: thanks, will do === Lure [n=lure@clj46-234.dial-up.arnes.si] has joined #ubuntu-laptop [10:30] any recommendation for power saving on a notebook? It seems to suck power much faster than it used to under a different linux. [10:31] cpufreq on? [10:32] define "on". It switches around on cpu speed, depending on load. [10:32] well, clocks down on idle is fine enough [10:32] heya jldugger [10:32] you can set it always low if you're desperate [10:32] I just wish I knew where the drain was [10:32] hey === Solarion is Trelane from gnome [10:33] i vaguely knew that [10:33] actually, I'm solarion from gnome too, but not on irc. ;) [10:33] wonder if it's the r300 driver? [10:33] #k-slug [10:33] oh, that too [10:33] thats where i primarily know you [10:33] heh [10:34] anyhow, any ideas? [10:34] backlight [10:34] hard drive [10:34] nah, that's pretty much the same. [10:34] hard drive might be spun up more [10:34] tickless kernel [10:34] that's probably in feisty+1 [10:34] remove CDs from the drive [10:35] turn off stuff you don't use like bluetooth [10:35] 2.6.19 has some infrasturcutre, but it looks like the actual tickless patches didn't make it [10:35] I wonder if network-manager is part of the problem [10:35] is there an easy bt on/off switch? [10:35] there is on mine ;) [10:35] its right next to the microphone [10:35] jldugger: what is it? [10:36] its a hardware switch :P [10:36] ah, in bios? [10:36] LAME. ;) [10:36] given that networkmanager keeps both cards fired up, I wonder if that's the drain [10:36] there's also an Fn-button combo that optionally switches off wifi/bt/both [10:37] well, the new gnome has a nice power manager tool [10:37] new? [10:37] you can watch a graph of power usage over time [10:37] new-ish to me [10:37] 2.16? [10:37] yea [10:38] oh, hey. there it is. [10:38] Solarion from Gnome, you say? [10:38] well, my userid [10:38] I'm Trelane on irc.gnome.org. [10:39] im just teasing you about not finding it before i did [10:39] ah === Solarion waves his hand dismissively [10:40] one thing to note is that the prediction isnt very linear [10:40] as time goes on estimate time kinda goes up [10:40] like an exp modeled linear, yes [10:41] im sure you computational physicists know more about what kind of regression it is [10:41] pfft === jldugger waves his hand dismissively === Solarion waves his dismissive handily [10:41] anyways, my laptop idles around something like 20W [10:41] did you see the battery recall notifier? [10:41] talk about awesome [10:42] ? [10:42] cant say i did [10:42] someone hacked in battery recall notification. Basically called the community to send in info from recalled and non-recalled batteries, and got gnome-power-manager to notify you if your battery may be recalled. [10:42] looks like mine idles at around 20W too [10:43] wonder how low it got in your other distro [10:43] it was gentoo. I dunno. [10:43] I had maxed out some stuff too [10:44] if you think it's r300, try switching to vesa and see if that gets you anywhere [10:44] I'd rather run r300. :) [10:44] I'm thinking it might be networkmanager + hard drive [10:44] you can at least rule it out :P [10:44] one is more readily solvable by me than the other [10:44] and if I get *one* more notificaton pop up and seize input, I'm gonna strangle it [10:45] yea, network manager isn't quite finished [10:45] really hates suspend in edgy [10:45] it's awesome, but it should go lower power. :( [10:45] and the damn keyring [10:46] I've not had much problem, save one weird case where it was eating cpu until the next suspend-resume [10:46] yes, keyring is annoying [10:46] maybe it was hibernate, but it totally tanks on one of those [10:47] I think I fixed it for me [10:47] can't find devices and stuff === Solarion hasn't had a problem since [10:47] well, im one of those evil nvidia users, so it really doesn't matter too much whether suspend works or not [10:48] heh [10:48] you're not evil [10:48] a fool, but not evil... ;) === Solarion is a foolish ati user. [10:48] here's hoping neauvou works out [10:48] yep [10:52] so you think that network manager is somehow setting your wifi signal strength too high? or just running too often? [10:54] might be causing things to scan too often [11:00] scan too often. It'd be nice if it'd just power down a card if the other's being used. It'd also be nice if g-p-m would set the cards to low-pwer mode. [11:01] a card? [11:01] yes [11:01] just how many are in that laptop? [11:01] 2 [11:02] 1 builtin ipw2100, one pcmcia atheros === sfllaw [i=sfllaw@debian/developer/coleSLAW] has joined #ubuntu-laptop
