SWATare there any good 'power-management' tools around? (since Ubuntu shortens the 'usage-time' of my battery)02:45
BurgundaviaSWAT: in what sense?02:46
SWATwell, I have a celeron and CPU scaling isn't possible (which sucks). Then I can't undervolt my CPU, since my CPU doesn't support it (which also sucks)02:48
SWATI don't know if possible to scale my CPU down anyway?02:48
Burgundaviano idea, sorry02:49
SWATor perhaps 'tweak' my component (primarily HD) usage? I guess that would be the component using the majorty of power which could be tweaked02:49
BurgundaviaI have a celeron M, which might support it02:49
Burgundavianah, the issue is mostly using the exisitng power management features02:49
Burgundaviaif you right click on the battery iocn and choose preferences02:50
Burgundaviathere is a "battery life over performance" switch02:50
SWATBurgundavia, if you can run powernowd etc. you probably have scaling possibilities. I don't, afaik (I also should have Celeron M if I remember correctly)02:50
BurgundaviaI don't deviate from stock config02:50
jldugger_SWAT, you say ubuntu shortens usage time02:50
jldugger_compared to windows?02:50
=== lakin [n=lakin@S01060013101832ce.cg.shawcable.net] has joined #ubuntu-laptop
SWATjldugger_, yes, and I'm not the only one who experiences this02:51
Burgundaviaagain, the issue is mostly using the existing power management features02:51
Burgundaviabug your vendor to support linux better02:52
jldugger_SWAT, sure. but the question is what windows is doing that Ubuntu doesn't. and usually its frequency scaling etc02:52
jldugger_gnome's power management stuff in 2.16, along with the new power-management-backend seem pretty nice02:52
SWATI had a discussion about this with a LUG member02:52
jldugger_so/02:52
jldugger_you're having a discussion about it with one right now :P02:53
SWATWindows apparently has 'tweaked' their power managed far better02:53
SWATs/managed/management/02:53
jldugger_i get pretty much the same battery life in windows vs linux02:53
Burgundavianah, it is not that02:53
Burgundaviawindows has vendor support, so windows can use all the shiny features like spinning down disks, slowing down fans, etc.02:54
Burgundaviahardware controlled stuff that is vendor-dependant02:54
jldugger_if it were "tweaks" that linux was missing, i'd expect the opposite02:54
SWATmy classmates (2) and a LUGmember confirmed my suspicions02:54
SWATBurgundavia, yes, I would guess so02:55
jldugger_SWAT, there's clearly things that can be done, as one of the SUSE developers pointed out in a talk a few months ago02:55
SWATwell, undervolting hardware is tricky to get to work, but a friend of mine got it to work (and that also saves a bit of power)02:56
jldugger_http://lwn.net/Articles/181888/02:57
SWATif laptops would be more efficient, more people would probably used it. If more people use it, it would get 'seen' in action more often, which would create a larger userbase02:58
Burgundaviausebase is only part of the issue02:59
Burgundaviawe need developers and vendor support02:59
SWATvendor support will come if the userbase is big enough02:59
SWATotherwise they would be cutting into their own userbase03:00
jldugger_thats not nessecarily true03:00
jldugger_vendors would still resist open source even if there is a user base to justify addressing the problem03:01
Burgundaviavendor support does not come from single users03:01
Burgundaviavendor support comes from big orgs buying 10k laptops at once03:01
Burgundaviawho say "I am buying this to run Linux on it. Make certain it is feature comparable"03:01
SWATOK, guys, thanks for the chat. I'm off (sleepy-time). Thanks for the quick chat. Have a nice sunday03:04

sk1nnyhi guys i've just 'inherited' a toshiba satellite pro a10 laptop and have been trying to install dapper 6.06 on it (first from a downloaded live cd, then from a downloaded alternative cd) but to no avail. The live cd install hangs on the first page, and the alternative appeared to work until it reboots and then i'm told "Missing Operating System". Is there any chance of getting ubuntu onto this machine without hauling out hardware?12:03
Burgundaviask1nny: have you tried 6.10?12:04
sk1nnyno, not yet, i figured i'd probably be safest with dapper.12:04
sk1nnydoes edgy have better laptop support?12:04
