ubotusmbfs: mount and umount commands for the smbfs (for kernels >= than 2.2.x). In component main, is optional. Version 3.0.22-1ubuntu4 (edgy), package size 375 kB, installed size 900 kB09:04
ethosIf I switch it it just says the other one doesn't exist.09:05
ShoeUnitedPersonally, I just used synaptic, there's a bunch of proggies that will integrate smbfs into your normal window manager.09:05
DarthLappyethos: You have to create the mountpoint.09:05

ethosI like the man pages.  Searching can come back with alot of stuff to sort through.09:12
PuMpErNiCkLeYou'll need an empty directory somewhere to mount it to.  A conventional place is in /mnt.09:15
PuMpErNiCkLeYou won't have to touch /etc/fstab unless you don't want to have to run that command every time.09:15

merethanhi all12:08
merethanI am trying to install xubuntu on a machine with 128MB RAM and a 350Mhz. PII. Should be enough I think. But the install is wicked slow. (not the copying but the program) for example: scrolling trough the locale settings (city list) took me 30 mins to get 10 places up the list. (unforunate for me, the list starts at L and I need to be at A)12:11
TheSheepmerethan: use the alternate cd12:12
TheSheepmerethan: the live cd installer needs lots of memory12:12
merethanfor example the LFS LiveCD runs quite smooth. And xubuntu was made for low end.12:12
merethanwasn't it?12:12
TheSheepmerethan: I thnk it would hang half way through if you have less than 192MB anyways12:12
merethanthat's not really low-end12:12
TheSheepmerethan: the graphical installer is taken from ubuntu12:13
TheSheepmerethan: use the alternate cd with the text-based installer12:13
TheSheepmerethan: it's fast12:13
merethanok12:13
merethan~650MB of ISO downloading wasted :P12:13
merethanluckily I used a rewritable12:13
TheSheepmerethan: sorry to hear that :(12:13
TheSheepmerethan: with a little bit of luck, in the next release the text-based installer will be included on the live cd too12:14
TheSheepmerethan: but that's not so simple for some reason12:15
merethantext installer sounds like "does not take up so much space on a 650MB CD"12:17
merethanwhat makes it not simple then?12:18
TheSheepmerethan: space is not the concern, I think. I don't know the details.12:18
TheSheepmerethan: I'm just an user too12:18
merethanah12:18
merethanwell, at least I am now downloading the alternate12:19
TheSheepmerethan: you can also just move the hdd to a faster computer, do the install and move it back12:20
merethanwhy does the about button is xfce, but INIT sais "starting gnome" at cd boot?12:20
merethan(I turned of the quiet mode)12:21
merethan(and the bootlogo as well :) )12:21
TheSheepmerethan: because xubuntu too uses gdm for the login screen -- the same program as gnome12:21
merethanah12:22
TheSheepmerethan: the text comes from the gdm -- it's not exactly accurate, it doesn't start gnome, gnome (or xfce in xubuntu) is started after you log in12:22
merethanwich is automated12:22
TheSheepon livecd -- ye12:22
TheSheepss12:22
merethanI don't like graphical login's12:23
TheSheepmerethan: you can disable it12:23
merethanI prefer everything text, exept when I type startx12:23
merethanI know12:23
TheSheeptext-only login screen has some accessibility problems12:24

merethanWhy are those god damn ISO's alway's over 650MB02:18
merethanI have no 700MB rewritables02:19
merethanat last. the text mode install works quite nice so far02:54
merethanunfortunate it costs me a CD, as I have no 700MB rewritables. Linux distro's get outdated very fast, so it is petty much wasted.02:55
DarthLappyCDs are pretty cheap and easy to get though.02:56
merethanluckily, yes02:56

DarthLappyIt's Linux! Not a waste.02:56

merethansome have a "slot" for a BIOS chip02:59
merethanWhy don't we have open source BIOSes? If we did we could combine Linux kernel and the BIOS into one.03:00
merethanLike the xbox game console has03:01
DarthLappyOoh.03:01
merethan(xbox game console has a Win2000 kernel)03:01
merethan(but the idea is the same)03:01
DarthLappyThat's a pretty cool idea.03:02
merethanThis is not new. Actually, petty much any computing device works like this. A chip holds an image, wich gets loaded when the power switches on. Most computers (like Mp3 players) have the OS and BIOS all the same thing. When IBM designed the PC they made a BIOS wich only did initialized the hardware, and then loaded an image from the Hard Drive. This way, everybody could have his own OS.03:04
merethanDownside is, the HD needs to spin-up before it can get to work, wich takes time.03:05
merethanThat's why the xbox game console does not have to wait before the HD is at speed. On xbox, the kernel and the BIOS is all the same thing, that's why you see that funky flubber animation emediatly when you turn it on. At the same time all hardware is being checked and started. Once the flubber animation is done playing all hardware, including the HD, is ready to go.03:07
DarthLappyXboxen are cool.03:08
DarthLappyh4xx0r MS for the BIOS leetness.03:08
merethanIf we had desided to do all software, including BIOSes, open source, we could have this on our PC's too. But because of popetairy BIOSes (Phoenix and Ami) we cannot do this. Apple ever made an attempt of using open BIOSes but it never fcame far.03:09
merethanunfortunate for us03:10
DarthLappyI should think it'd be pretty difficult to do, which is why the market is relatively small.03:12
merethanPetty much every computer manufactor only releases an popetairy BIOS, either a Ami or Phoenix, modified for their hardware boards. Why is there no one shipping an open BIOS/firmware?03:13
merethanI don't think the market is small03:13
merethanThe market is just as big as the open software market03:14
merethanBIOS is just software03:14

merethanthe base comes from Ami or Phoenix, but for every mainboard it needs to be customized.03:17
DarthLappyMeh, shows what I know :D03:18
merethanMy old Abit-BE6 board has an 66MB IDE chip, and it's firmware is loaded from the BIOS chip. You won't find something weird like that in Ami's or the Phoenix store :P03:19
merethanoh BTW, those "compaq" BIOSes are just rebranded Phoenix BIOSes.03:20

merethanGoogle is my best friend03:35
merethanMaybe I should go experiment with my old Pentium boards by loading Linux kernels into the BIOS chip or something03:36
merethanThat would be fun03:36
DarthLappy:)03:37
merethanMost functions a BIOS does these day's are made for things like DOS, wich has not really any own detection mechanisms. Linux on the other hand does everything by itself, and petty much does not use any of the BIOS features.03:37
merethanaltough a BIOS would be nice to set the system clock and stuff like that03:37
merethanAnd some stupid chips need firmware to be loaded from the BIOS. Luckily for me those early Pentium boards do not contain any exotic hardware who need special BIOS features. So maybe I can get an old Pentium board to have a Linux shell in 3 secs from power-on!03:39
