MajicNo, like export the debian packages that were downloaded...02:54
kebexport = convert into a different package format?  or save downloaded .debs onto a cd?02:58
MajicThis has me excited and i would like to save all my package downloads onto a disk if I have to clean install this:  http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/herd202:59
MajicSince I don't know much about how the packages are saved, I came here to find out... :)02:59
PuMpErNiCkLeBy default, the packages you've downloaded are cached in /var/cache/apt/archives.03:00
PuMpErNiCkLeDon't count on Edgy versions always working in Feisty, though.03:00

ubotuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions03:05

spasticteapotEh.06:40
spasticteapotThey're good for word processing.06:40
spasticteapotWhich is what I bought this for.06:40
spasticteapotI'm getting a spiffy new gaming box soon - I'm waiting for a killer deal on a 7900GS or the like.06:41
cellofellowI do a lot less word processing than I ought to.06:41
spasticteapotHeh.06:42
spasticteapotI am a student.06:42
spasticteapotA notebook that is smaller than an actual notebook is a huge asset.06:42
cellofellowme too, just not a traditional student. Homeschool.06:42
spasticteapotMy backpack is much, much smaller than many others'.06:42
cellofellowAnd I've written very little lately, 'cept the con con.06:42
spasticteapotEh...homeschool has its disadvantages.06:42
cellofellowlike having to be so self-motivated.06:43
cellofellowwhich is an advantage too.06:43
spasticteapotFor example, you don't learn how to deal with people constantly trying to intimidate you, and bad food.06:43
cellofellowSo? I got to deal with about 45 people last week, we were all trying to write a constitution for iraq. Who says homeschoolers have no social life. We had a Ball afterward.06:44
spasticteapotIt's not unlike the corporate world, except with less suits and more smootching in the halls.06:44
spasticteapotYes, but did you get staples shot at you?06:44
spasticteapotOr strangled?06:44
spasticteapotReally, you're missing out on a lot!06:44
kebhaha06:44
cellofellowsomeone brought about a dozen guns06:45
spasticteapotDon't laugh. Both happened within 20 minutes of each other in the 8th grade.06:45
cellofellowwas gonna stage a coup.06:45
spasticteapotBoth kids got 45 minutes detention.06:45
spasticteapotThe same day, a few kids started a food fight in the cafeteria.06:45
spasticteapot2 days in-school suspension for them.06:45
spasticteapotGuess where the administrators' priorities lie?06:45
spasticteapotAs a side note, I still live up the street from an awesome mexican restuarant.06:46
cellofellowdid you notice I said some people brought about a dozen GUNS to the convention?06:46
spasticteapotOnce, when I was getting breakfast with my folks, I walked by both the principal and my science teacher, both looking rather...dishevled... having margharitas and burritos for breakfast.06:46
spasticteapotYes, I heard you. This is par for the course in many areas.06:46
kebdid they fire the guns, like real iraqi celebrants06:47
kebgetting offtopic here btw ;)06:47
cellofellowafterwards, yes. Airsoft guns actually.06:47
cellofellowk06:47
spasticteapotTo finish the story...I walked up to them with my biggest sh17-eating grin, and said "hello!" in a cheery voice.06:47
spasticteapotThey looked like they wanted to jump through the window.06:47
kebhehe06:48
spasticteapotThen there's the story with the rabbi and the hovercraft...but that's unrelated.06:48
spasticteapotI have a highly surreal life.06:48
kebglad to hear xubuntu is contributing :D06:51

mark487max: thx on gnome partition editor: i know that's available when booting live from cd, but ever since i've been running xubuntu from hd, i haven't see it listed under apps -> system.  Know if it gets installed w/xubuntu to hd?11:53
maxamillionLNX3mpyr: yeah ...the Gnome printer config is still a little more advanced but is really resource heavy so it isn't used in Xubuntu11:53
maxamillionmark487: it is on mine ... i might have installed it a long time ago for one reason or another but if you would like to install it from the repositories just do "sudo aptitude install gparted" (in the terminal without the quotes)11:54

DrX0how do you create a recovery disk that can recover you if your partition table and boot and maybe system files are damaged?12:00
Jester45such things happen?12:01
maxamillionDrX0: keep a livecd handy .... only solution i know of12:01

DrX0the whole drive?12:02
DrX0can a live CD recover a corrupted partition table with LVM partitions?12:02
Jester45syes12:03
maxamillionDrX0: sure can12:03
Jester45boot to the live cd mount the drive edit the table save and done12:03
maxamillionDrX0: or worse case scenario it can get the data off the drive so you can reformat or buy a new hdd12:03
DrX0I ran the recovery install and it told me that I had to enter the partition table for the LVM partitions.12:03
DrX0(manually)12:03
maxamillionDrX0: you don't do recovery install, you just boot the live cd and mount the hard drive ... manipulate how you need to and go on with life12:04
Jester45would anyone like to explain why my ethernet card has a serial port?12:04
maxamillionno12:04
maxamillion:P12:04
DrX0but if Linux says the partition table entry for the LVM partition holding the data is invalid, how can live CD mount it?12:04
maxamillionJester45: i have no clue ... i think it has something to do with legacy hardware12:04
Jester45you tell the livecd how to mount12:05
maxamillionDrX0: you edit the livecd's /etc/fstab and just force it ... if you are more stubborn than the software, you will normally win12:05
DrX0but won't the live cd report the partition table is bad and fail to mount the lvm volume I want?12:06
Jester45oo12:06
Jester45you mean the idex on the the disc?12:06
Jester45that tells linux how big the partion is and stuff like that12:06
DrX0you know when you setup an LVM partition it tells you the cluster size and asks for the starting and ending block number?  that 41112:07
DrX0yes12:07
maxamillionooohhhhh12:07
DrX0it won't mount because it says that 411 is bad/missing12:07
maxamillionyeah, that's outside my scope of LVM knowledge12:07
DrX0(Windows installer may have wiped it)12:07
DrX0if I carefully reparition the drive using the exact parameters as I did originally and tell it not to format the partition, would that maybe put it back?12:08
DrX0or, is there some other way?12:08
DrX0actually, I never knew the start/end block numbers, only the size in GB of each paritition12:08
Jester45guess?12:09
