Dante123hi all.....I'm an elementary school teacher and at work we have a SmartBoard...that works fine with our windows laptops. I have ubuntu on my laptop and I have downloaded the SmartBoard software.....however....I can't seem to get it to detect the board.....hooked up via laptop USB to Serial port on Smartboard. Has anyone here had experience getting ubuntu to work with a Smartboard (interactive whiteboard)...ubuntu 6.10 installed01:46
Burgworkhmm, nope01:46
BurgworkI would check to see if the smart board is detectd01:47
ograDante123, rodarvus is supposed to know about such kernel driver stuff since very recently ... but i dont know if he had time to look into any options yet01:47
Burgworkogra: wonder if we could (ab)use telepathy to this end01:48
cliebowDante123:have you tried lsusb?01:48
ograBurgwork, that still needs working kernel modules in most cases01:49
Dante123I get this error message....(will have to write down exact wording) that says something about can't detect smartboard or that port is already in use...something like that....01:49
Burgworkyep01:49
Burgworkogra: was thinking for the UI, assuming the kernel module exsits01:49
ograright01:49
ograbut the kernel is the main concern atm01:49
ogradrivers are rare01:50
ograat least working ones01:50
Burgworkheh01:50
Dante123my problem is that the board is at school.....and I don't get much time at school to troubleshoot this.........i have 4 kids of my own to take home from school with me each day and the older ones aren't into hanging around while Dad troubleshoots smartboard and linux....can't say I blame them01:50
Dante123thanks cliebow....I will try that......01:50
Dante123I also talked to tech support at smartboard and they said to call tomorrow when the "linux" expert guy is there.....01:51
cliebowDante123: il look into that as well.we have one here..01:51
ograDante123, file a bug and if you attached the smartboard copy /var/log/dmesg to your desktop a minute later then attach it to the bug later01:52
Dante123i'd love to get it working with ubuntu......the smart notebook software works well01:52
Dante123ok...thanks.01:52
ograthe log output will tell our kernel devs what to do (if there is something they can do)01:52
Dante123will try the things you have suggested.......do you think I should have the smartboard plugged in when booting up....or plug it in after initial boot up???01:53
cliebowlsusb should tell you that01:54
cliebowwatch the logs when you plug it in01:54
Dante123ok...thanks02:12

highvoltageaaaah01:18
ograespecially since he needs to touch files anyway to get an icewm seassion ready01:19
ograi dont think it ships one01:19
ograbtw, what do you think about xfce on the second CD ?01:20
=== highvoltage sends back another response to doug
highvoltageXfce on the second CD sounds great01:21
highvoltagemany people use tuXlab specifically because Edubuntu they prefer Xfce01:21
ograso sad this is unmaintained: http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~qiq/src/shfs/01:21
highvoltageand for some people it would be better to use Edubuntu with Xfce, currently01:21
highvoltageso I personally think Xfce on CD2 is good01:22
ograyou could do pam_mount with a simple sftp homedir ...01:22
ograonly needs an ssh server01:22
highvoltagewhat's the problem with using fuse again?01:22
highvoltagewe use it for ltspfs...01:22
highvoltageso why would it be a problem using sshfs?01:22
ografuse sshfs ? hmmm01:22
highvoltageapt-get install sshfs :)01:23
ogranot sure pam likes that01:23
ograbut i'll check01:23
highvoltagepam_mount is supposed to work with sshfs, not that I know from first hand experience yet01:23
ogranot having to open nfs or samba by default for home dir mounting would be rad01:23
=== highvoltage nods
highvoltageand sshfs makes the authentication less troublesome too01:24
ograespecially since we already have ssh01:24
cbx33hey ogra01:24
highvoltagewith samba you pretty much have to use ldap01:24
cbx33any further news on the book chapter?01:24
highvoltageotherwise the password syncing turns into too much work01:24
ograwhich is what we'll do anyway01:24
ograbut i dont want additional prots open01:24

highvoltagesamba might be nice long term for Windows integration01:25
ogracbx33, not yet, i'll get to it01:25
ograhighvoltage, indeed01:25
ograand its up to you to set it up like that for now ...01:25
ograi just dotn want to overcomplicate the defaults01:26
ogra(unless i have ten more devs heping me)01:26
highvoltageagreed01:26
highvoltageno I think samba is a long-term thing01:26
highvoltageI also think it's about time Edubuntu gets another full time developer01:27
highvoltagecan't the EC vote on something like that? ;)01:27
highvoltageperhaps the EC can make a recomendation, at the very least.01:27

highvoltagerodarvus works on lots of other stuff too though, but I suppose it will get better when the X maintainer takes more stuff over from him01:32
ograhumm ...it just struck me that we dont need pam_mount for ltsp ...01:33
ograldm could do that01:33
