ron_ono, Xen...12:54
PuMpErNiCkLeXen shouldn't depend on the desktop environment you're using.12:54

ron_oXen and xubuntu.01:01
ron_oXen the paravirualized OS.01:01
ron_oparavirtualized*01:01
SharnSounds fun. Gonna look into it.01:02
ron_othe thing is that Xen let's your OSs have access to the hardware layer, thereby making your system much quicker. Like 90% efficient01:03
ron_ocompared to VMware which might only be 10% efficient, or even less.01:04
SharnSo... is it like VMware?01:04
SharnOh, ok.01:04
SharnVMware has given me almost full speed for the ram I give it.01:04
ron_oit is in a sense. But you have to modify your OSs if you don't have virtualization technology in your processor.01:04
ron_ohow can that be?01:05
ron_oit's as fast as using software on a native computer?01:05
ron_oI heard it really slows things down.01:05
SharnI dunno. The guest OSes run just as fast as they would by themselves on my computer with that much ram...01:05
cellofellowkqemu is cool, and if you've a virtualization-enabled CPU there's the new KVM in Linux 2.6.2001:05
ron_othen stick with it.01:06
cellofellowboth don't need you to modify the OS, but are still uber-fast01:06
SharnWhat about an AMD Sempron? :P01:06
cellofellowfor an emulator.01:06
cellofellowyou'd need kqemu instead of kvm. both are kernel-level qemu accelorators. I think Xen uses qemu too.01:06
ron_oxen may not work. Ask them on ##xen01:06
SharnI have no idea if it's "virtualisation-enabled"...01:06
cellofellowI say use KQemu. It was closed-source till recently, but not anymore. I use it and it's fast. like 85-90%01:07
cellofellowusually a vm-CPU is a dual core01:07
cellofellowand a non-cheap one like a sempron.01:07
SharnAhhh. Mine certainly is not that. :)01:07
SharnOnly 1.8Ghz, at that...01:07

Shar1Like... for 2-3 whole months before actually installing Ubuntu. xD02:40
varunshould use kvm02:41
cellofellowbut then I could run it for real. Just the installation was in qemu, and running in real stuff.02:41
varunmuch faster than qemu02:42
cellofellowkvm only works on new chips, and uses qemu anyways, and I used kqemu, which is like kvm.02:42

Shar1Ooooh. I see.02:42
varunyup, it's good if u got the newer chips02:44
varuncat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx02:44
cellofellowkqemu and kvm act sort of like Xen, making the guest system run directly on the CPU instead of on a soft-CPU. It only works for x86 on x86 though. Soft-CPU's can emulate PPC or SPARC or whatever on x86 or whatever.02:44

cellofellowprobably pretty hard02:54
varunlol yeah i guess02:54

Prisoner_how can I determine if I have QT04:12
Shar1sudo apt-get qt3-dev-tools04:13
Shar1Copy paste that and enter it04:13
Shar1Er, no04:13
maxamilliondon't know ... i haven't touched Qt in atleast 5 years outside of using a Knoppix cd04:13
Shar1sudo apt-get install qt3-dev-tools04:13
Shar1There. ^04:13
Prisoner_it specifically says need QT 4.204:13
Shar1Yeah, I know. I keep forgetting these things.04:14
Shar1Replace 3 with 404:14
Shar1sudo apt-get install qt4-dev-tools04:14
Shar1I've never really used Qt either. That's a KDE thing, and I'm not a fan of KDE...04:16
Prisoner_that gave me an error too04:16
Shar1What error?04:16
Prisoner_Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have04:16
Prisoner_requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable04:17
Prisoner_distribution that some required packages have not yet been created04:17
Prisoner_or been moved out of Incoming.04:17
Prisoner_Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that04:17
Prisoner_the package is simply not installable and a bug report against04:17
Shar1Ok... that's odd. Hang on04:17
Prisoner_that package should be filed.04:17
Prisoner_The following information may help to resolve the situation:04:17
Prisoner_The following packages have unmet dependencies:04:17

Prisoner_running libqt in synaptic04:18
Prisoner_seeing if it's there04:19
Shar1Ok04:19
Shar1I think you should probably just search for qt4-dev-tools in synaptic. That will get all it's dependencies, too...04:19
Shar1Yeah, do that...04:20
Prisoner_trying what you suggested04:20
Shar1K04:21
maxamillionsudo aptitude install qt4-dev-tools04:21
Prisoner_all that synaptic had were kde versions of it and it wouldn't install04:21
maxamillionthat would resolve dependancy issues too04:21
Shar1Mmk. maxamillion's way will work too.04:22
Prisoner_wonder if I should install a KDE version of linux on my box instead04:22
maxamillionPrisoner_: so synaptic ... it's GUI .... people like GUIs04:22
Prisoner_I'm still learning04:22
maxamillionso = use*04:22
Shar1KDE is SO slow, if you ask me.04:23
Shar1It probably won't run on 400Mhz...04:23
Prisoner_I tried it already, it was slow04:23
Shar1Yeah. The exception would be Slax. :)04:24
Shar1Maybe04:24
Prisoner_going to eventually install it on a 1.583ghz machine anyway04:24
Shar1Yeah. Get Kubuntu if you're going KDE. :)04:24
maxamillionKDE is slow because its bloated and cluttered .... and because Qt is slow in general04:26
Prisoner_I think I'm going to forget this04:28

kapuI have installed xubuntu 6.1 successfully onto an old laptop. This laptop has no nic. I just bought a wireless nic. I was successful extracting the firmware, and the card is now useable. I am able to "iwlist eth0 scan" and get back a list. But, since my wireless network uses wpa, I have some additional challenges to connect. Could someone here offer help?03:03

maxamilliongrazie: why?11:06
graziemaxamillion: long story...but I want it for a none ubuntu distro11:07

CaivaxJester45, yes.  I have 128MB RAM... and I will like that my xubuntu go more faster.11:08
graziemaxamillion: and the source needs libcurl and the distro has libcurl3..just like ubuntu11:08
maxamilliongrazie: i would think libcurl3 would suffice11:09
graziemaxamillion: but I can't apply the patch11:09

Bogus8man, i'd really like to get this SD card working... it's completely useless to me and now I scored this laptop w/ the SD reader built in (flush) so it would be pretty slick/stealth12:13

Bogus8Sharn: might also depend on how old the hardware is12:18
Bogus8w/ todays hardware compiling anything from source isn't that much more beneficial12:18
jdrakeIf I do remove it, will it try to remove all now unneeded dependancies?12:18
jdrakeIt appears that is in general true12:19
maxamillionjdrake: well ... you could try "sudo aptitude purge xubuntu-desktop" but i'm pretty sure that will only remove the meta package (same as other package managers would)12:19
jdrakeIt wants now to remove 70 packages when saying 'remove xubuntu-desktop'12:19
jdrakepurge says the same12:20
jdrakeSo I will just do it, then reinstall12:20
