My laptop froze and upon restarting, x complained about some nvidia module version mismatch so I removed nvidia-kernel-commond, removed nvidia-glx, installed nvidia-kernel-common, installed nvidia-glx, and now x is complaining it can't load the NVIDIA module because of some missing module it's trying to load "wfb", even though th01:39

killerkhello everone05:08
killerki am in need of help, i have a Netgear MA521 Wireless card but have no clue how to install it05:09
killerkcan someone help me05:09
jdrakendiswrapper would be a good start05:10
jdrakeIt willl wrap the windows driver that is provided with the card.05:10
jdrakeIt is not fool proof mind you.05:10
jdrakeI have had only good luck with it when using the latest version. But that was many months ago.05:10
ssbmbut i was reading online and it says that they have an official linux driver for my chipset05:11
ssbmRealTek 8180L05:11
jdrakeok, good luck with it :P05:11
jdrakeIf ifconfig shows your card then luck you.05:11
ssbmthe thing is i have no clue how to do anything05:12
ssbmwhere do i start05:12
ssbminstall driver first? or what05:12
jdrakeDoes ifconfig show anything05:12
ssbmwhat do i do, go into terminal and type ifconfig?05:12
ssbmon their website they have an official driver for it, but i dont know which kernel xubuntu uses?05:13
ssbmalso i currently have not installed xubuntu on the system with the wireless card, i just want instructions on how to do it so that way when i do install it i know how to get internet05:15
jdrakeyes you want to type ifconfig05:15

ssbmif it shows up what do i do?05:16
jdrakeThe plain truth here: If it has a driver for it (that is a native kernel driver) then it would be included and automatically detected. If not, then it might be in the restricted modules package. Otherwise you would use ndiswrapper.05:16
jdrakeI honestly do not remember how to configure them beyond that, the laptop I set uses FreeBSD which is a different setup.05:16
ssbmo05:17
jdrakeI did manage to get it setup on linux, but it was painful.05:17
ssbmso your saying if an official driver for it exists then i should just be able to plug it in and use it?05:17
jdrakeright05:17
ssbmok05:17
ssbmwell ill give it a try05:17
jdrakeI don't know if ubuntu comes with handy things for network configuration like that.05:17
jdrakeHowever, there was a nice applet you might want to find. I have to look up the name.05:18
ssbmwhat about xubuntu?05:18
jdrake'Network Manager' I believe it was called.05:18
ssbmdoes that come with xubuntu?05:19
jdrakeMainly with 'ubuntu' itself, but there is no reason why the gnome or kde frontend wouldn't work with xfce.05:19
jdrakeI believe it puts an icon in the system tray05:20
jdrakeyes, it even says it will work05:20
jdrakenetwork-manager-gnome is the package05:20
ssbmdoes xubuntu come with a package manager like synaptic05:20
ssbmcause i would be able to install it through there right?05:21
jdrakeIt uses synaptic05:22
jdrakeand yes05:22
ssbmalso which do u reccommend for an old system, xubuntu, or ubuntu or whatever other versions of ubuntu there are?05:22
ssbmthis is a really old system im gonna install it on05:22
ssbmP III Processor05:23
jdrakeWhat speed05:23
jdrakeHow much ram05:23
ssbmi am pretty sure 128mb of ram05:23
ssbmbut it might be less05:23
ssbmi bareley ever use it since currently it has xp on it and whenever i try to do something it freezes, which is the reason why i want to use xubuntu because i heard it runs better on older machines05:24
jdrakeyes you want xubuntu, but I would highly recommend upgrading the ram.05:25
ssbmwell its a laptop, so its really hard to upgrade05:25
jdrake256mb or better is what I personally recommend. It might be usable otherwise, but no guarantees.05:25
jdrakeMake sure you have a good 512mb or more of swap space.05:26

ssbmon the xubuntu website they say it can run with only 64mb of ram05:26
jdrakeAlso - perform a memory test, it might not be windows' fault it is freezing.05:26
ssbmim pretty sure its my display driver05:26
jdrakeThey can say anything they want, I can't contradict them as i have no tried it. I just know how easily it ran on a P2-400 with 640mb of ram compared with 128mb.05:26
jdrake128mb was slow, 640mb was perfectly usable05:27
ssbmbecause every time it freezes after a while the screen resolution will shrink and it say that that the display driver stopped working05:27
jdrakeinteresting05:28
jdrakeHave you downloaded and burned xubuntu yet?05:28
jdrakeIf  not, I recommend you get the 'alternative' cd, I always use that one because of its low memory requirements.05:28
