=== arrummzen_ [n=arrummze@pdpc/supporter/active/arrummzen] has joined #ubuntu-server [02:15] Why does '/etc/init.d/apache2 restat' hang? [02:15] It stops the Apache2 server, but it doesn't start it again... it just sits there... [02:16] well, after ~5 seconds it finishes waiting and starts the server again... but why the wait? [02:30] it's waiting for apache to completely shut down [02:31] is this an apache server with lots of threads? [02:31] or child processes? === arrummzen_ [n=arrummze@c-67-181-229-123.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] has joined #ubuntu-server === arrummzen_ [n=arrummze@c-67-181-229-123.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] has joined #ubuntu-server === blanky [n=blanky@pool-71-160-33-180.lsanca.dsl-w.verizon.net] has joined #ubuntu-server [03:55] hey guys [03:55] how come sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart doesn't return any output [03:55] when I go to my site and view php files they're just text files [04:33] blanky: You probably didn't install a php interpreter (libapache2-mod-php5) [04:35] shawarma: I did, actually what happened was that my friend had compiled apache from source [04:39] Er.. ok. [05:11] hey guys, sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start doesn't return anything and it's not running from the looks of ps aux | grep httpd [05:11] what should I do === ||arifaX_ [n=||arifaX@p54B5C344.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #ubuntu-server === blanky [n=blanky@pool-71-160-33-180.lsanca.dsl-w.verizon.net] has left #ubuntu-server ["Leaving"] === jhutchins [n=jonathan@64-151-34-11.dyn.everestkc.net] has joined #ubuntu-server === aedes [n=crass@cpe-66-68-85-28.austin.res.rr.com] has joined #ubuntu-server [06:47] has anyone gotten lvm and device-mapper working? [07:16] aedes: i use lvm on almost all my machines [07:21] fabbione: have you tried 7.04 server? [07:22] it seems to be working with 6.10, but in 7.04 the mapper seemed not to be setup right [07:24] aedes: yes feisty server and desktop. both works fine [07:24] what problem do you have? [07:24] be more specific [07:25] fabbione: well the directory /dev/mapper wasn't created in feisty [07:25] aedes: lvm2 is installed only if at install time you create a volume on lvm. [07:26] aedes: if you didn't do so, just apt-get install lvm2 [07:26] yeah, I manually installed it [07:26] and you should get it then [07:28] hmm, well I've got 6.10 on there now and lvm seems to be working fine. An even bigger issue with 7.04 was when I upgraded the kernel it wouldn't boot, and complained about not finding any array to assemble in the mdadm.conf (the root fs is not on raid) [07:29] aedes: known bug. the mdadm maintainer is working on it [07:29] ahh, so that's just with the newest kernel? [07:30] it's not a kernel problem. [07:30] it's an mdadm script error [07:31] so that's in the initrd? [07:32] because when it says that its the 3rd line of the boot [07:33] yes in the initramfs [07:33] it doesn't matter when it says it [07:33] we make the kernel shuts up a lot at boot [07:33] and print only real error [07:34] hmm, yeah I just noticed that ... I liked the more verbose printing [07:34] remove quiet from the boot options [07:36] ahh, nice [07:36] so what would you recommend edgy or feisty? [07:37] for servers? dapper [07:37] hmm, why is that? the LTS? [07:37] yes the LTS [07:38] because edgy had 6 weeks less of development and stabilization. feisty is not out yet [07:38] so for server stick with dapper [07:39] hmm, what kind of sacrifices are made by choosing dapper? (less new functionality?) [07:40] almost none and i would look at the benefits of an LTS [07:40] not having to upgrade a server every 18 months rock [07:41] I'm not sure what LTS provides, I'm not sure if I'll be using it. This is a personal server [07:41] well then read about it [07:41] these are all FAQ a bit offtopic for this channel [07:42] yeah, thanks.
