OrionistiHi again01:00
OrionistiFirst of all I'd like to know someone is actually reading these lines, before I start talking about my problem =)01:01
Qewseriously, just ask your question and wait for a response. It's best that way.01:02
OrionistiWell, perhaps so...01:03
Qewas they say, cut to the chase ;)01:03
OrionistiProblem is this: My Xubuntu install hangs after it has loaded the frames of the install window.01:04
Qewdone an MD5 check on the ISO before you burned it?01:04
OrionistiNo, used Bittorrent, but used the inbuilt CD check, too01:05
Qewah, ok01:05
OrionistiThe computer is rather old, only 128 MB RAM, but according to the webpage that should be enough for the installation.01:06
Qewwell, you need the alternate installation CD. The live distro install needs 192MB RAM01:07
Orionistioh, I see01:07
OrionistiSo the live distro can't take advantage of a swap partition on the HDD?01:07
=== OGDA [n=thomas@dialup-4.246.217.11.Dial1.SanJose1.Level3.net] has joined #xubuntu
Qewwell, it's not that as such. The alternate one is text based (not hard to use, though), so needs less resources.01:08
OrionistiI see01:08
=== icicled [n=icicled@adsl-209-30-164-212.dsl.rcsntx.swbell.net] has joined #xubuntu
Qewwhat computer architecture have you got and what version of Xubuntu do you want?01:09
Orionistix86, preferably latest01:09
Qewdo you want a torrent or would you like a direct FTP download?01:09
TheSheepOrionisti: latest stable or latest beta?01:09
QewOrionisti: http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/mirror/cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/6.10/release/xubuntu-6.10-alternate-i386.iso.torrent01:10
Qewthat's the torrent one... naturally01:10
OrionistiAs long as it works =D Well, stable would be preferable since I'm a newcomer to Xubuntu01:10
OrionistiThanks Qew01:10
Qewnp... hopefully you'll be able to install it this time01:11
OrionistiBut I can update the programs to latest beta with Adept or similar once I get it up and running, and if I find the need for that01:11
OrionistiHeh, the alternate CD isn't quite as popular as the live CD, only 150 KB/s... But it's ok, I have time.01:13
Qewyes, as long as you change the repositories to the new beta or whatever. Personally, I'd suggest, considering you're new to Ubuntu, you should stick to releases rather than betas. But, yeah, you can upgrade to new releases, etc.01:15
Orionistiindeed. I have been using Knoppix for a few months now, but it being a live CD by it's nature didn't quite want to be installed on a HDD =)01:17
OrionistiWell, thank you for this advice and if there's something I don't understand with the text-based install or it has some problems too, I'll come back here.01:18
Qewsure, someone will be able to help you01:19

Qewgo there for help, too01:20
Qewlots of info, etc01:20

ormiretprobably safer with Xubuntu on that spec, a little on the light side for ubuntu01:55
Athensmanok will it run faster than windows??01:56
ormiretdepends on what version of windows and how you measure faster - graphics are often faster in windows as the GUI is more closely linked into the system and actually doing things faster in linux.01:57

OrionistiI was thinking to create a 1 GB swap partition and separate partitions for the OS and /home/ so if I decided to reinstall my OS I wouldn't lose my /home/. What size should the OS partition be? I have 40 gig HDD.03:11
OrionistiAlso what file system would you recommend?03:15
TheSheepOrionisti: how much ram do yu have?03:18
TheSheepOrionisti: generally ext3 is best supported03:18
Orionisti12803:18
TheSheepa gig of swap seems like much... but then again, if you have 40GB03:18
OrionistiI can spare one gig for a swap, better too much than too little03:19
TheSheepOrionisti: I think that 5GB for system should be safe and leave you some room for extending03:19
TheSheepOrionisti: my install is 3GB right now, for example03:19
Orionistithanks03:19
TheSheepit needs some free space for things in /tmp03:20
TheSheepand /var03:20
TheSheepespecially if you plan to burn cd images03:20
OrionistiI don't have a CD burner in this laptop03:21
OrionistiI have now 1 gb swap and 39 gb ext3, how do I divide the 39 gb to 5 + 34 ?03:22
TheSheepOrionisti: just create a 5GB partition03:22
TheSheepand then create a partition from the rest03:22
OrionistiThat's the thing, I don't know how to create a new partition.03:23
TheSheepOrionisti: there should be an option in the installer?03:24
=== TheSheep tries to recall the exact layout
Orionistioh I see03:25
OrionistiI had to delete the existing partition and make the new ones from the free space03:25

TheSheepah, not necessarily03:26

TheSheeplinux doesn't care03:26

nekr0zron_o, What can it be with resolution?08:50
FakeOutdoorsmannekr0z: your screen dpi may be set differently between Gnome and XFCE08:50
nekr0zThe weirdest thing is, in Firefox the fonts are still of normal size. And in OpenOffice they seem to be even bigger than in GNOME08:51
nekr0zFakeOutdoorsman, Where would I look for it?08:52
FakeOutdoorsmannekr0z: I can't remember.  I don't think it is your problem, but it might be.08:53

BFTDPuMpErNiCkLe why is jester45 banned?10:22
PuMpErNiCkLeBecause right now he's using the cgi-irc gateway.10:22
PuMpErNiCkLe!proxy10:23
ubotuThe #ubuntu channel and related channels ban users joining from anonymous gateways like tor/silenceisdefeat/cgi:irc because the abuse:useful ratio is close to infinity:nothing -- project cloaks will let you join, otherwise you should simply not use an anonymizer.10:23
ubotuAttention tor users.  You may think you are anonymous, but you are not.  Please visit http://tor.unixgu.ru/ and see for yourself.   Please evaluate your need to use tor here on irc.  If you wish anonymity, Freenode offers cloaks of many different types. http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#cloaks10:23
BFTDbut he runs the ubotu10:25
PuMpErNiCkLeSeveas runs ubotu.10:25
