=== lns [n=lns@75.61.204.105] has joined #edubuntu [12:18] Sup all [12:29] I'm in a bit of a bind here... I have a bunch of schools that want to migrate to Linux/LTSP/Edubuntu [12:30] sounds good [12:30] what is the issue? [12:30] I really want to use Ubuntu/Edubuntu, but there lacks a good user management tool for >20 users [12:30] you can use openldap [12:30] takes a bit to setup [12:31] what kind of admin tools are there for that? [12:31] The IT staff in the schools are all windows ppl [12:31] there are a bunch of tools [12:31] they don't want commandline at all [12:31] I use lat, personally === cafuego_ [n=cafuego@caffeine.cc.com.au] has joined #edubuntu [12:31] lat..ok [12:32] is it pretty useful for LTSP/Linux user environments? [12:32] I know a lot are just generic LDAP admin tools [12:32] it would be good to have one that is geared toward easy user/system admin [12:32] I know very little about LDAP [12:32] it is a bit of a headache to setup [12:32] doesn't do as much hand holding as AD [12:32] yea [12:33] The schools are leaning toward Novell/Suse enterprise [12:33] because of Zenworks [12:34] lat looks nice, though [12:35] pretty basic [12:35] it does the job [12:36] I have the most expertise in Ubuntu/Edubuntu environments though, and PXE boot is something that really helps after everythign is set up, vs. having a thin client like Neoware that has a firmware-based OS on it, it's a bunch of useless stuff [12:37] another thing is a keyboarding program.. tuxtype/ktouch are very limited... are there any other linux native typing tutor programs out there? [12:37] I tried installing Typing Master but it craps out with a generic installation failure mssg [12:37] I have no idea [12:37] just put everybody in #ubuntu for a few hours [12:37] ;-) === pauljw [n=paul@pool202.dial1-clec.newalb.win.net] has joined #edubuntu === merriam [n=merriam@85-211-237-173.dyn.gotadsl.co.uk] has joined #edubuntu === DrX [n=axon@adsl-68-120-226-109.dsl.irvnca.pacbell.net] has joined #edubuntu [02:24] anyone know why i can't mount a new ext3 volume? [02:11] Hi [02:11] can you guys give me some help with the student control panel? [02:11] I'm trying to practice with it for a while, already installed the server part [02:11] but what do I have to do with the client computer? [02:12] do I have to install something in it, run a command...? [02:13] It just controls the system itself, and attached thin clients. [02:14] (Edubuntu is a thin client system, by default). [02:14] didn't know that [02:14] Docs are a work in progress :) [02:14] so, if I install thin-client-manager in my ubuntu install [02:15] it will pick up any computers connected to the same network, with edubuntu installed? [02:15] and take them as clients? [02:15] I haven't used TCM, but I don't think so. [02:16] Thin clients boot from the server, and are essentially just terminals. [02:16] Basically you install Edubuntu classroom server on the server PC [02:16] aha [02:17] Then set the other machines to "network boot" [02:17] PXE in Intel-speak [02:17] hmmm [02:17] Most PCs now support PXE out of the box [02:17] from the bios, you mean? [02:17] Yes [02:17] I would have to try that [02:17] Change the boot option from hard drive to LAN [02:18] The OS on the hard drive remains unchanged [02:18] so you don't really need anything installed in the clients, cool [02:18] It's simply ignored [02:18] Very, IMO :) [02:18] sorry to ask dumb questions BTW, I'm just to all the thin client thing and it kinda beats me [02:19] I'm new I mant [02:19] It went out of fashion for a long while [02:19] gonna check that old computers bios, doubt it will have PXE tho [02:20] It may be listed as "Network" or "LAN" in the boot options [02:20] Anything less than 6 years old has a good chance. [02:22] boot sequence, right? [02:22] Yes. [02:22] no, that thing has only drive letters [02:22] I'll have to try it out with a newer PC [02:23] so, is there a webpage for the project or something? [02:24] I'd like to see it in action, to see the screen viewer and stuff [02:24] http://www.edubuntu.com/, but that's a little dated. [02:25] TCM is fairly new, and hasn't been in a release yet. [02:26] will be in feisty by default right? [02:28] I think so, although it wasn't in Herd 4. [02:28] I haven't had the time to check Herd 5. [02:29] it looks really good [02:30] oh, it says in Rosetta that it's not set up for translation [02:30] and here I wanted to help translate it to Spanish [02:30] Oh, probably not then, but I'm not a developer.
