flubberis there a way to close and open ports on edubuntu?01:11
LaserJocklike with a firewall?01:15
flubberyah01:15
LaserJockyou might try firestarter01:18
flubberis there anything on edubuntu that manges the ports now?01:18
LaserJockwell, firestarter is pretty good I think01:19
flubberhave you heard of portmap01:20
LaserJocksure01:20
flubberhow do i use it?01:20
LaserJockflubber: http://www.linuxmanpages.com/man8/portmap.8.php01:22
LaserJockflubber: but I think you might want to check out http://www.fs-security.com/01:23
flubberso if i am not using portmap than that means that all of my ports are open right now?01:23
LaserJockno01:23
LaserJockfor Ubuntu anyway, the default install has no ports open01:23
flubberthen what is blocking my ports?01:23
LaserJockwell, if there isn't anything listening then there's nothing to block01:24
flubberso there isn't anything on edubuntu that can i use to manage the ports but firestarter?01:24
LaserJockEdubuntu probably has a few ports like ssh open on a default install01:24
LaserJockoh, I'm sure there are01:24
flubberyah thats one of the ones open i01:25
LaserJockbut firestarter is supposed to be the best/easiest to use firewall in Linux01:25
flubberthanks01:26
LaserJockthey even have a graphical wizard :-)01:26
LaserJockI've never used a firewall in Linux so I'm not much help01:27
flubberdo you know how i could host an irc server on my computer?01:27
flubberits linux01:27
LaserJockthere are a few irc servers available01:27
flubbercan you give a good one with a wizzard?01:27
flubberi can't find any01:27
LaserJockI don't think there are ones with wizzards01:28
LaserJockircd is the one I know01:28
flubberis there one that is really easy to install01:28
LaserJockwell, installation is easy, configuring might be hard01:28
flubberi am fareley new to linux but i think i got the hang of it01:28
flubberwell if installing it is easy then ok01:29
flubberhow could it be hard to configure it?01:29
LaserJockbecause it's all from a terminal with config files01:29
flubbercould you give me link?01:29
LaserJockfor ircd http://www.nic.funet.fi/~irc/server/01:30
LaserJockhere's an example configuration file ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/unix/irc/docs/server-docs/example.conf01:31
flubberi tried this one before do you have one that is hard to install but easy to configure?01:32
LaserJockhehe01:32
LaserJockI don't know of one01:32
flubberso thats the only one you know of?01:33
LaserJockyep01:33
flubberok well i will try it again01:33
LaserJockgenerally IRC servers are big operations01:34
flubberhave you ever installed it before?01:34
LaserJockno01:34
LaserJockI've never had a need to have my own IRC server01:34
LaserJockI think I'd probably set up a jabber server01:34
flubberwhat is a jabber server01:35
LaserJockjabber is a instant messaging protocol01:36
flubberare they easy to setup?01:36
LaserJocklike AIM01:36
flubberor less hard then irc?01:36
LaserJockI think so01:36
flubberi used to im01:36
flubbercould you help me find one of those?01:37
flubbernvm01:38
flubberfound one01:38
flubberthanks for the help01:38
flubbertalk2ulatr] 01:38
flubberi am going to set it up now01:38
LaserJockflubber: here's one http://www.subvs.co.uk/installing_wildfire_jabber_server01:38
flubberlaserjock: http://linuxgazette.net/112/tomar.html01:39
LaserJockthat one looks like it might be a bit more complicated01:40
LaserJockI'm looking for instructions that are for Ubuntu specifically01:40
flubberis seems more fun though and it doesn;t use mysql01:40
flubberwell i will be right back have to eat dinner01:41
LaserJockI've got to run too01:41
