I'd like to know the differences between the ubuntu server and desktop edition.. is it only LAMP? The server edition didn't work getting this error: "codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] " so I'm thinking of changing to desktop edition and installing LAMP manually. [02:49] pse: kernel, only kernel [02:49] everything else is the same [02:49] this is the same distribution, same packags, same code [02:49] ah ok [02:49] you've got any idea what that codec_read error is? [02:50] you get that for what? [02:50] when I boot up linux I get that [02:50] on like the third row [02:53] i doubt that's kernel error [02:53] are you running mythtv or something like that? [02:53] could be alsa, tough... [02:54] "Starting up... [02:54] Uncompressing Linux... ok, booting the kernel. [02:54] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] [02:54] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] [02:54] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] [02:54] codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000] " [02:54] that's what I get when booting [02:54] and I just tried to install the ubuntu server edition with LAMP [02:56] it was my first boot so I haven't installed anything myself [02:56] i guess it's related to alsa [02:56] ok [02:57] you could report it as a bug [02:57] pse: Edgy? [02:58] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/51281 [02:58] Gotta run [02:58] ok [02:59] I'm not sure what edgy is [03:00] I just used this http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and picked Ubuntu 6.10 - Supported to 2008 on standard pers. comp. [03:01] pse: yes, that's edgy [03:01] ok [03:02] anyway.. how am I supposed to correct the error I got, when I can't even boot..? :] === EtienneG [n=etienne@ubuntu/member/EtienneG] has joined #ubuntu-server [03:09] you can't even boot? [03:09] so, you didn't install it yet? [03:13] pse: booting is related to something else, not this.. [03:20] ivoks: I have installed it.. but it doesn't start linux very well since it freezes after the codec_read errors.. the comp I'm currently on is not the same comp.. [03:20] you should edit grub option before booting [03:20] and then remove quiet and splash [03:21] then you'll see the real reason why it doesn't boot [03:21] did you change order of drives after install? === pirothezero [n=piro@cpe-70-113-117-38.austin.res.rr.com] has joined #ubuntu-server === mtc [n=mtc@0x50a40462.hrnxx8.adsl-dhcp.tele.dk] has joined #ubuntu-server [03:34] Is the iptables firewall open by default === EtienneG [n=etienne@ubuntu/member/EtienneG] has joined #ubuntu-server === pirothezero [n=piro@cpe-70-113-117-38.austin.res.rr.com] has left #ubuntu-server ["Screw] [04:08] <[diablo] > mtc yes [04:08] <[diablo] > oh he's gone [04:18] lots and lots of patience === r00tintheb0x [n=r00tinth@198.170.183.130] has joined #ubuntu-server === jsgotangco [n=jsg123@ubuntu/member/jsgotangco] has joined #ubuntu-server === ivoks [n=ivoks@21-23.dsl.iskon.hr] has joined #ubuntu-server === mtc [n=mtc@0x50a40462.hrnxx8.adsl-dhcp.tele.dk] has joined #ubuntu-server === vciaglia [n=vciaglia@host223-27-dynamic.17-87-r.retail.telecomitalia.it] has joined #ubuntu-server [06:46] is ftp-server enabled as default on the ubuntu server edition? === theacolyte [n=theacoly@unaffiliated/theacolyte] has joined #ubuntu-server [06:54] mtc: nothing is enabled by default [06:55] mtc: or to phrase it better, there are no open services on ubuntu server at install [06:55] mtc: you can do whatever you would like at that point [06:55] mtc: ie to install ssh server, sudo apt-get install openssh-server [06:59] I'm be doing an install on a remote server.
