Lord_Maynoth_42its /dev/sda106:44
maxamillionLord_Maynoth_42: lots of reasons ... but the main one is generally that the gnome developers see their target user as "stupid" and thus try to make the desktop environment do as much as it can for them without completely taking them over06:44
maxamillionLord_Maynoth_42: well ... no, i take that back ... i think the main reason they use gnome is becuase gnome mixes well with windows networks because it has full samba support for file server shares and printer shares06:45

commonlyUNIQU3I can just run an apt-get install xubuntu-desktop to get all the goodies right?10:45
commonlyUNIQU3how about gnome and/or kde apps? do they still work?10:46
=== commonlyUNIQU3 sorry for the noob questions

commonlyUNIQU3eek!  I just got done with a clean install & troubleshooting the wifi connection!!!10:51
commonlyUNIQU3I'd hate to start over...10:51
Mercheloor use synaptic package manager to remove, add stuff.10:51
commonlyUNIQU3if gnome/ubuntu has a 256mb requirement, what is xfce/xubuntu?10:52
graziecommonlyUNIQU3: ok. just add the xubuntu-desktop then...but it will not be quite a good as a clean install. oncey your happy with xubuntu (I sure you will be) you look at clean install later10:52
commonlyUNIQU3^ as long as everything works10:53
=== commonlyUNIQU3 crosses fingers...

commonlyUNIQU3!10:54
commonlyUNIQU3stibs: what's this "Gnome Infrastructure" you recommend loading at startup?10:55
commonlyUNIQU3is it installed with xubuntu-desktop?10:55
stibsgnome-volume-manager, gnome-power-manager, gnome-system-tools and dependencies10:56
stibsno, I think it's not installed by default from the xubuntu CD10:57
stibsbut if you already have a working Gome install, you already have it10:57
commonlyUNIQU3stibs: k, thanks10:57
commonlyUNIQU3stibs: I'll check 'em out...10:57
stibsin xfce control center you can configurae in Startup that it loads the Gnome environment10:57
commonlyUNIQU3the laptop is apt-getting some xfce goodness (which will take a while), and I'm tired so I'm off!10:58
commonlyUNIQU3thanks all for the help...10:58

NearTotalN00bHello!12:08
NearTotalN00bPerhaps I should change my handle...12:08
NearTotalN00bAnyway, I've had some upgrade problems.12:09
NearTotalN00bI've upgraded from 6.10 (Edgy) to 7.04 (Feisty), and it's not gone smoothly.12:10
Cygnetruh roh12:11
Cygnetwhat happened?12:11
NearTotalN00bWell, the Xfce environment keeps crashing.12:11
NearTotalN00bSo I did an apt-get to install Gnome, for the time being.12:11
Cygnetwhat prompts the crashes? can you tell?12:12
NearTotalN00bWell, I set up a new user account, and it crashed when I tried to open a terminal window :-(12:12
NearTotalN00bI'm not sure if that's the only thing that crashes it, but it seemed the X server crashed (from its logs).12:12
