=== majoridiot [n=majoridi@74-141-134-199.dhcp.insightbb.com] has joined #ubuntu-mythtv [12:36] in grub, if i want to see whats happening during boot, do i remove quiet, splash or both? [12:37] both [12:37] i think [12:38] ok [12:38] i will try that [12:40] wholey crap [12:40] holey? [12:40] does that go into a log somewhere [12:40] i can't read that fast [12:41] hehe [12:41] look at the logs in /var/log [12:41] syslog, messeges, debug, etcc. [12:41] /var/log/messages for the most part [12:43] wow [12:43] guess i should get downloading [12:43] ? [12:43] i am going to try to transfer these to a flashdrive [12:43] my desktop has become severly unstable [12:43] hard locks [12:44] :( [12:45] at least my mythtv box is getting better :) [12:46] :) === majoridiot is working on another windows box [12:47] man majoridiot are we losing u here? [12:47] all these windows boxen [12:47] yeah :( [12:47] but they both are going home with feisty DVDs [12:47] :D [12:48] what you should be doing is setting up feisty on them with xp or vista in a VM :) [12:48] XP install today. thank god. i couldn't take one more vista nag prompt. === majoridiot is just grudgingly doing what he is being paid to do [12:49] ah [12:49] built a new box yesterday and put vista on it. bcking up a win98 box and putting XP on it tonight. [12:50] kinda depressing, but it's nice side cash. [12:50] superm1: have you seen the two new plugin pages? [12:51] majoridiot, i'm gonna run off to work. if you see rogue780 stop in later, could you ask how much more he wants to put into the usplash's, i've got packaging ready to drop his in. just need them in the appropriate sizes (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 640x400, 1365x768 scaled to 1024x768) [12:51] majoridiot, na i havent as of yet. [12:51] majoridiot, ill look after work though [12:51] how much more work he wants to put into them? [12:51] k [12:52] arg [12:52] majoridiot, well if he has any other changes [12:52] or if he thinks they are ready [12:52] to go into gutsy [12:52] yes [12:52] got it [12:53] sending an email [12:53] k ctach ya later. have fun with that xp thing :P [12:53] email is overrated, i prefer the pony express [12:54] there is something way wrong here [12:55] ? [12:55] i think i may have found a situation that goes against superm1's theory of there is no problem that needs a reinstall [12:56] we'll try recvery mode [12:56] what's going on? [12:56] the computer hard locks up randomly, although it seems to be becoming more frequent [12:56] once in gnome i can't even click on the start menu [12:57] sometimes gnome doesn't even finish starting [12:57] its pretty hardcore [12:57] what are the logs telling you? [12:58] not much, of course i cant read logs for beans [12:59] i see warnings and stuff, and i know thats bad [12:59] but i can't seem to find the where the computer starts to boot, so i will know what happened right before that [01:01] the boot will look something like this: Apr 23 14:27:49 incinerator syslogd 1.4.1#18ubuntu6: restart. [01:01] in /var/log/messages [01:01] everything should be timestamped [01:01] although now i have renamed the /var/log/messages via the recovery console. Im going to restart and try to get it to crash (shouldn't be that hard) [01:01] ok [01:04] arg [01:11] sure, now when i want it to lock up, nothing [01:11] maybe it just didn't like that log [01:11] LOL [01:11] or got jealous that the mythbox was getting so much attention [01:11] maybe, but it wasn't large by any means [01:12] lol [01:12] although reading through /var/log/messages, it does seem i messed a few things up [01:13] sudh as? [01:13] such [01:14] Apr 23 16:08:44 poseidon dhcdbd: Started up. [01:15] no [01:15] this is almost a fresh feisty install [01:15] just some upgrades [01:15] and any extra software was installed via apt-get [01:16] then i get this a little later [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): starting (version 2.18.0.1), pid 5925 user 'thomas' [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only configuration source at position 0 [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/thomas/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 1 [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 2 [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/var/lib/gconf/debian.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 3 [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:54 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/var/lib/gconf/defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 4 [01:16] Apr 23 16:08:58 poseidon gconfd (thomas-5925): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/thomas/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 0 [01:17] it wont lock up now, but the only thing i changed was that log file, and it was a measly .5 Mb [01:17] previous ones being 2Mb + [01:18] what is "poseidon? [01:18] name of computer [01:18] perhaps that is the problem, i need to submerge the computer in water? [01:19] mayhaps so. it's too dry? [01:19] did all of this begin after an update? [01:19] i dont think there have been any updates to feisty yet [01:20] it is probably due to something i did [01:20] well... what have you been doing to it? [01:20] lets see [01:21] let me break down the logs i posted [01:21] I think anything having to do with eth0 is because i switched my eth1 to eth0 after i removed my eth0 adapter [01:22] i do not know what gconf or the i2c problems are [01:22] and in installed vmplayer [01:23] and I think thats about when all this started, when i was fixing my eth0 problem [01:23] looks that way, yes. [01:23] oh wait, i also installed a bluetooth adapter [01:23] and today i was trying to get NFS working [01:24] i changed the eth1 to eth0 by editing /etc/iftab [01:24] which contains the persistent names to network interfaces [01:25] all i did there was delete eth0 and its mac address and then change the 1 to 0 in eth1 [01:26] I had thought that this was a bug in the beta as it happened a few times back then (not this frequently though) [01:26] i didn't have the bluetooth or vmware player installed back then [01:28] that's a lot of change [01:28] s [01:28] i suppose [01:29] its funny that i cant get it to lock up now [01:29] maybe if i just always want it to lock up, it will never lock up again [01:29] :) [01:29] wish for the worst [01:29] yea [01:30] im starting to hate logs [01:30] but just cause i have been looking at so many lately [01:30] i would hate it even more if there were no logs [01:31] yup. [01:31] i gotta take off for awhile... biab.
