fooBah, any reason for ubuntu to have a problem with RAID5 with the Perc card on a Dell 2950? Apparently, it has issues with 6 drives, but it works with 5. And now they are trying CentOS... and if it works, they'll probably use that. /me shakes head at ubuntu07:14
ivoksfoo: what kind of an issue?07:16
fooivoks: I wish they would have gotten the DRAC card for me so I could do this, bah. http://x01.ath.cx/temp/IMG_1306.JPG - this was an error he got... but, I'm really wanting to say it's a PEBKAC issue.07:19
ivoksfoo: this is PEBKAC07:19
ivoksmouting proc on /root/proc07:19
ivokswhat else can i say? :)07:19
fooheh07:19
foohttp://x01.ath.cx/temp/S1030024.JPG07:19
fooAnd when he was installing centos, it said that07:20
fooAgain, I'm going to blame PEBKAC07:20
ivokswhy GPT? is it over 2TB?07:20
fooYes, 2.5. Not too sure about GPT (gparted). 6 500GB SATA drives on RAID507:21
ivoksgood luck with creating GPT in centos :)07:21
ivoksubuntu supports it07:21
ivoksanyway... you have to create gpt on it07:22
ivoksthis can't be done with fdisk07:22
ivoksonly with parted07:22
fooCentOS just barfed, apparently07:22
fooI see07:22
ivoksbut be careful07:22
ivoksit's impossible to boot from disk with GPT partition table07:23
ivoksif you have 386/amd64 architecture07:23
fooHm, grub should be on the MBR or the first drive?07:23
fooI'd assume MBR07:23
fooRight?07:23
ivoksthere is no MBR on GPT partition tables07:24
fooSo, you're saying because we have more than 2TB, we need to use gparted to make the partition07:24
ivoksyes (ubuntu installer does that)07:24
ivoksand you will need another disk for /boot, to be able to use grub07:24
foook, and which ones don't? fedora, centos, debian07:25
ivoksor you will boot from CD07:25
ivoksdon't know07:25
foook07:25
ivoksubuntu will work07:25
fooBut you know centos doesn't support it, right?07:25
ivoksnot sure07:25
fooalrighty07:25
ivoksits been long time since i worked with redhats07:25
fooThat's good :)07:26
foook, so, you're saying that I'll need a disk outside of the RAID5 for /boot to use grub?07:26
foofor grub to use /boot, I think I meant07:27
ivoksGPT is EFI's partition table07:28
ivoksand EFI platform has special boot process07:28
ivokslet's say 'BIOS has boot loader'07:28
ivoksso, there is no MBR on GPT partition tables and BIOS from 386 arch will not know where to read from07:29
fooWhat's EFI?07:29

ivoksitanium07:29
ivokshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_Interface07:29
fooThe drive with /boot probably needs to be out of the RAID5 array, eh?07:29
ivoksright07:30

foook, so, since it's the 2950.. it supports 6 drives, we're going to need to do raid5 with 5 drives, 6th drive would be a 500GB drive with /boot.. and, I guess we could throw the OS on there too - no?07:35
ivoksif i was you, i would add all disks in raid5 and additional small disk for system07:36
ivoksi have couple of installations like that07:36
fooYeah, I thought about that, but (as they've told me, I don't have physical access) it can only support 6 drives07:36
ivoksall of them have additional disk, but one is booting from CD07:36
fooI see07:36
ivoksbooting from CD is not a good solution07:37
=== foo nods
fooShould they be able to stick another drive in there? 07:37
ivokshehe i don't know; i don't have that computer :)07:38
foohehe, ok07:38
maswanI'd put 4 in a raid5 or raid10 for data and 2 small ones in a raid1 for OS07:38
foohm, I see07:38
ivoksthere is one more solution07:39
ivokstwo raid fileds 07:39
ivoksand then connect them in LVM07:39
ivoksso... raid5 out of 4 disks + mirror out of 2 disks07:40
ivoksand then connect them with lvm07:40
=== foo really wishes they would have gotten the DRAC
ivoksdo *not* crate one single disk + raid field and connect them with LVM07:41
foook07:41
ivoksif you loose that single disk, you loose all your data07:41
fooyup, single point of failure07:41

jbsnthe quality and speed of the installation process in 7.04 seems to have degraded since 6.1010:14
jbsnthe auto-detection of hardware in 7.04 seems to take forever, while in 6.10, it was very quick, detecting the same hardware10:15
jbsn7.04 seems to be taking forever to calculate the lvm / partitions on a 250GB drive (its pretty bad, going on 5 minutes, compared to less than a minute in 6.10)10:15
jbsnthere any known problems with the installation / kernel in 7.04 on amd64 for ubuntu server? couldn't find anything specific on the site, wondered if anyone here had similar problems10:16
jbsnits not the hardware, went back and reinstalled 6.10 after 7.04 on the same hardware and it was nice and quick.. 10:16
jbsn7.04 seems to be looking for hda, even when there is no hda (eg. just using sata, so its sda), but the installer doesn't seem to realize that.. keeps probing for hda..10:17
