WhamazoomWould you all reccommend Xubuntu Vs. FreeBSD + xfce?05:11
Whamazoomfor a beginner!05:11
Whamazoomgood, beacuse I have been porting Gnome2 onto a freebsd install for over 12 hours now....im getting tired of this BSD lol :D05:13
Howdy125I'm using Xubuntu and I love it ..05:14
Whamazoombut would you say I would gain no advantages to installing a minimal debian, and apt-get installing xfce Vs. just popping in Xubuntu?05:14

=== BlueEagle [n=blueeagl@ti541210a340-1724.bb.online.no] has joined #Xubuntu

Whamazoomso could I just get debian, then install xfce, and start adding gnome programs? theoretically05:25
WhamazoomMaybe I should start with what im doing with this computer...05:26
Howdy125Well you could .. your life would be a lot easier if you use xubuntu though.05:26
WhamazoomI look at email, webpages, listen to music, movies, IRC, torrent, ftp server, remote desktop(windows),ssh login, and I wouldnt mind playing with apache, I also need wifi support with VPN connections05:27
Whamazoomand thats pretty much what i would use linux for....games stay with me on XP :D05:27
WhamazoomI just need a stable laptop to take to campus with me from time to time05:28
Howdy125You can do all of that with any distro .. just some are harder to set up than others.05:28
Whamazoomand to run an ftp sever once and a while05:28
Whamazoomso Xubuntu will suit my needs fine?05:29
Howdy125Should .. long as you take the time to learn a few things along the way.05:30

Howdy125grazie, Worked great for me .. :)05:33
WhamazoomIt just installs like .mp3 support, and flash java quicktime and rreal right?05:33
ubotuAutomatix2 is a script that tries to install some software, and often fails and breaks systems. We don't provide support for it, and we strongly discourage its use. Problems caused by Automatix are often hard to track and solve, and it might sometimes be easier to !install a fresh copy of Ubuntu. See also !WorksForMe05:33
PumpernickelIt's better to use the regular Ubuntu installation tools.05:34
ubotuCommon Sense: Just because you can, does not mean you should. Think before you do. "Works for me" does not mean it is ok. The latest version of everything is not always useful if you aim for stability.05:34

Howdy125hyper_ch, ok .. I used to do it all manually .. took a shortcut this time around with automatix05:51
ubotumedibuntu is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons - See http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/05:51
hyper_cheljefe_:  in the end both are the same... the 704 comes with everything precompiled and 7.04 alternate does not... 7.04 desktop is also a live cd - which doesn't run everywhere and 7.04 alternate should be able to run everywhere05:51
eljefe_hyper_ch: 'precompiled' vs. what, source packages?05:51
hyper_chWhamazoom: if it's a repository it's normally alright.... automatix does more than just fetch files from a repository and add it to the system05:52
hyper_cheljefe_: not really... I don't really know the exact difference but there is one since the alternate iso is bigger than the desktop one05:52
eljefe_hyper_ch: would i be better off with one or the other?05:52
hyper_cheljefe_: but after install both are the same05:53
hyper_cheljefe_: with 192 ram you can run the desktop I think but I prefer installing from the alternate05:53

ecmicro_udderboxand I wanted to reinstall from scratch to see how 7.04 worked.08:40
ecmicro_udderboxwell, while I was attempting to repartition the HD08:40

ecmicro_udderboxor something like that.08:41

ubotuecmicro_udderbox: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug report at: http://bugs.ubuntu.com/  -  Bugs in/wishes for the bots can be filed at http://launchpad.net/products/ubuntu-bots08:42
ecmicro_udderboxWell i dropped into the shell and ran cfdisk, deleted all of the partitions and wrote the changes.  It seems to have fixed it.  I know it seems simple but a noob wouldn't know how to do that08:42
ecmicro_udderboxoh and the start menu in live cd doesn't have the applications available by default you need to add them in the properties08:43
ecmicro_udderboxwhen you right click I mean08:43
TheSheepecmicro_udderbox: well, this is the support channel, there are no devs here (usually), if you want to make a suggestion or report a bug, either use the bugtracker or the mailing list08:43
ecmicro_udderboxoh I know that.  I just wanted to pass this info along in here because it /is/ the support channel08:44
ecmicro_udderboxI've already reported this08:45
TheSheepecmicro_udderbox: ah, ok, thank you08:45

rudefyetthey're a bit more optimized08:50
TheSheepah, indeed08:50
mcscruffCould not open '/dev/kqemu' - QEMU acceleration layer not activated <<qemu running sooooo slow08:51
rudefyetand my GeForce 4 is getting old too08:51
ecmicro_udderboxok is there a way to install in textmode with the desktop version or do I need to download the alternate?08:51
TheSheepmcscruff: you need to compile the kernel modules for kqemu08:51
TheSheepmcscruff: the licence forbids distributign them compiled08:52
TheSheepmcscruff: there is a howto on the forums08:52
ubotukqemu is a kernel module (now free under the GPL license) for speeding up the !QEMU virtual machine. Installation instructions can be found at http://help.ubuntu.com/community/KQEmu - see also !qvm8608:52
mcscruffTheSheep, i have :P08:53
mcscruffkvm wont work on my lappy tho08:53
