[04:41] yes [04:42] ok see the one that says applications? [04:42] or do u mean top left? [04:42] go in there and click "Add/Remove" [04:43] i found it on the top left and i clicked add programs? [04:43] yep =) [04:44] you are doing fine [04:44] good [04:44] did a new window pop up [04:44] yes [04:44] ok so this is the primary way you can install supported software on your system [04:44] alright sweet [04:44] this contains a large variety of different software from passtime games to office software to educational suites [04:45] alright [04:45] click on Games on the left [04:45] lol i did [04:45] Scroll down till you find Sudoku [04:46] and check the box next to it [04:46] then press the apply button [04:46] it will ask you if the changes you have made are what you want [04:46] click apply again [04:46] there isn't one called that [04:47] ok pick a different game [04:47] anything that looks interesting [04:47] (just nothing that starts with a K, Ill explain that later) [04:48] ok i picked one [04:48] im installing [04:48] =) [04:49] downloading actually? [04:49] yep [04:49] it downloads it and installs it for you [04:49] does that mean i download a game or software each time i install it? [04:49] yes, when you select new software to install it downloads it from the internet [04:50] if you are on a dial-up modem or have to pay through the nose for bandwidth there are ways to help mitigate your bandwidth usage [04:50] what happens if i download it from somewhere else? and save it to my desktop or someitng does it still do that or is that more of an advanced thing to do? [04:51] you wont find yourself doing that [04:51] I take it you are an Apple user? [04:51] lol no [04:51] i just am not used to the typing commands and stuff [04:52] ok generally speaking you shouldnt need to go into the command line too much [04:52] you see a lot of that in #ubuntu because for guys like me its easier to get people to do exactly what we want that way [04:52] basically when we tech support the user becomes our eyes and hands into their terminals =P [04:53] however now that you have downloaded a single piece of software [04:53] let me explain the difference between ubuntu and the windows world when it comes to installing software [04:53] yes and im playing it [04:53] so it worked === awk_ [i=awk@chello085216242254.chello.sk] has joined #ubuntu-classroom [04:54] in Ubuntu almost every piece of software you might want to install is kept in what is called a repository... this can be thought of as a giant software server [04:54] anything you want can be accessed through these servers [04:54] you dont run install programs [04:54] ok gotcha [04:54] you dont have to download it yourself [04:55] its all just at your fingertips and you dont really have to worry about the gritty details, thats our job =) [04:55] so what your are saying is that EVERYTHING is free? [04:55] EVERYTHING [04:55] cool [04:55] so basically its a server over the internet and i just download the stuff i want [04:55] right [04:56] cool [04:56] and you can uninstall stuff the exact same way you just installed it [04:56] cool [04:56] one word of warning however [04:56] software in the linux world has what are called "dependencies" [04:56] this means one piece of software might rely on another [04:56] ok? [04:56] for example [04:57] you see the clock on the top right of your screen? [04:57] yes [04:57] if you click on that a little calendar pops up [04:57] yes [04:57] that calendar is actually managed by another application called Evolution, which is a personal information manager (email, notes, contacts, and calendar) [04:57] so for that to work, you must also have evolution installed [04:57] ah [04:58] so what would happen if you were to try to uninstall evolution you ask? [04:58] hense dependencies lol [04:58] it wouldn't work [04:58] well... because that little calendar at the top right depends on it, it will uninstall that too [04:58] ok good to know [04:58] because dependencies are not suggestions, in linux they are mandatory [04:58] however, that said, the package manager will take care of that for you [04:58] how would u find out what is linked to what? [04:58] if something depends on something else, it will install both for you [04:59] like how do u know that the callender is linked [04:59] how do I know myself? I know how it works [04:59] but here is the general rule [04:59] everything you install yourself you are allowed to uninstall [04:59] ok [04:59] everything else is considered to be part of the base system [04:59] and should not be removed [05:00] alright so just like windows [05:00] simple enough? [05:00] yes i think [05:00] ok, so one thing you will find is that in Ubuntu there are three levels of software support [05:01] there is officially supported software [05:01] do i have the latest verison of Linux? [05:01] ok [05:01] unofficially supported software [05:01] and non-free (as in not GPL, still free as in money) unofficially supported software [05:02] currently, you only have enabled access to the first type [05:02] ok [05:02] lets go ahead and enable the last two since it gives you access to more software =) [05:02] ok sweet [05:02] so now we need to enable them [05:03] if you go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources [05:03] it will ask you for your password again (security is everything) [05:03] and then a new box will pop up [05:03] do you see it? [05:03] its not there [05:04] really? [05:04] yes [05:05] ok no big deal [05:05] ok good [05:06] go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager [05:06] sometimes my menus differ from users because I have a bad tendency to change things =P [05:06] ok [05:06] Synaptic is the big scary brother of the add remove program you used earlier [05:07] this thing shows you EVERYTHING you would want to know about software available to you [05:07] in here we are going to go to Settings -> Repositories [05:07] ok [05:08] and a now window will pop up [05:08] there are 5 or so checkboxes [05:08] go ahead and check them all =) [05:08] then press the close button [05:08] breezy badger? [05:09] oh thats why its not there, you are on 5.10 [05:09] i take it i need these updates [05:09] that came out a little less than two years ago [05:09] lol i just got it from a friend [05:09] but he said it was old [05:09] and u update it like every 6 months [05:09] thats ok, nice thing about Ubuntu, you can upgrade it =) [05:10] ok so what i need to do is update ? [05:10] yeah just close everything [05:10] (except this chat) [05:10] we will use the update manager [05:12] is there System -> Administration -> Update Manager [05:12] available to you? [05:12] ok so don't do anything with the other thing [05:12] yep [05:12] just close it all down [05:12] synaptic close right [05:12] yep =) [05:12] btw, are you on highspeed [05:12] satilite [05:12] about 150 down [05:13] do you get charged by the bandwidth or is it unlimited? [05:13] i get charged if i got over but yeah I wont [05:13] cause i haven't downloaded in a long time [05:13] i get 80 GB a month [05:13] ok well let me lay out the two options here [05:13] i use about 30 average [05:14] 228 megs [05:14] option A) we go through the upgrade procedure, this means you dont have to reinstall but since badger is so old, we have to go badger -> dapper -> edgy -> feisty [05:14] damn [05:15] the other option is to have you download the feisty install CD and reinstall [05:15] which will save you bandwidth and probably time [05:15] ok so how do i do that? [05:15] are you comfortable enough to be able to install it on your own? [05:15] lol i got this one didn't i LOL [05:15] I wasnt sure [05:16] however i don't like the damn boot loader [05:16] but yes you did =) [05:16] I can show you how to make the boot loader pretty =) [05:16] i have windows XP, Vista, and this [05:16] i have acronis boot loader and i love it [05:16] shhhh... those are heathen words around here =P [05:17] lol [05:17] where do you live (need to know to get you a fast mirror) [05:17] West of Chicago about 50 Miles [05:18] hey, Im in michigan =) [05:18] cool [05:18] http://mirrors.cs.wmich.edu/ubuntu-releases/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso [05:18] how big is this final going to be? [05:18] there you go [05:18] 1 CD worth [05:19] dvd or CD [05:19] CD [05:19] 700MB [05:19] you have a CD burner? [05:19] yup [05:19] do i have the software on here? [05:19] goodie =) [05:19] yes you do [05:20] or do i have to download something? [05:20] sweet [05:20] what's it called? [05:20] goooooood question [05:20] 2% done [05:21] i think its called gnomebaker [05:22] lol ok? [05:22] The basic one? [05:22] Doesn't it do it from Nautlis? [05:22] did it do that in breezy? [05:22] Hmm [05:23] If I remember correctly [05:23] nathan__, when it finishes downloading see if right clicking on it gives an option to burn it [05:23] it should... [05:23] im installing gnomebaker [05:23] Or just open your cd drive in Nautlis, and it should have something for burning cd's [05:24] well he needs to burn an ISO not a data CD [05:24] Ah [05:24] I know nautilus hasnt properly checked for that until recently [05:24] Yeah [05:24] so i installed the software [05:25] =) [05:25] wanna see what my desktop looks like while you wait? [05:25] sure [05:25] Quick question [05:25] Is there some way I can have my wifi connect at startup without having to use the keyring manager? [05:26] That's been bugging me for the longest time [05:26] yeah, you need to specify its settings in /etc/network or whatever the hell it is called, which interface is your wireless? [05:26] wlan0 [05:26] and WEP, WPA?
