Clarrisa_2008sigmamul88, ok, here is the $100,000 question.  Is there a way I can disable the GUI in xubuntu for when I want this old machine to have as much speed as possible when it's just serving up web pages?12:35
crimsunby "disable", do you mean "not start by default on boot", or do you mean "not have installed"?12:35
sigmamu188Clarrisa_2008: that is over my head12:35
sigmamu188Clarrisa_2008: but i know you can12:35
Clarrisa_2008ok, np12:36
crimsunif you mean the former, then do this: sudo chmod -x /etc/init.d/gdm12:36
Clarrisa_2008hey do you know how to start krusader so that it always opens up both pains at the /Root rather than the last place I was at?12:37
viddcrimsun, i think Clarrisa_2008 want it to not auto-load on boot, but be available if (s)he needs to use it12:37

hyper_chjohnny depp and keiry knightley are on my program tonight ;)05:25

kalikianagrazie, Well, it's definitely more complex than catfish ;)05:25
hyper_ch-y+a05:25
hyper_chwhat's catfish?05:26
kalikianaTheSheep, Yeah, at the moment *time* is the only factor holding me back.05:26
graziehyper_ch: what program is that?05:26
hyper_chgrazie: movie theater :)05:26
kalikianahyper_ch, It's a file search frontend by me, in pyGtk.05:26
TheSheepkalikiana: fortunately, time is somethng that never runs out05:27
hyper_chTheSheep: why do I keep hearing at exams then "time is up" ^^05:27
kalikianaTheSheep, Well, I'm sure some day my time will *come*. :P05:27

TheSheepgrazie: definitely not05:28
Eagle_101ah I will :)05:28
TheSheepgrazie: b'sides, dillo has a retarded user interface05:28
Eagle_101thanks hyper_ch :)05:28
kalikianagrazie, Nope, dillo would need more that a "little" css update.05:28
hyper_chEagle_101: you're welcome :)05:28

grazie!dillo05:30
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about dillo - try searching on http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi05:30
kalikianagrazie, WebKit is already extremely fast and functional, it only lacks a gtk interface.05:30
hyper_chkalikiana: does your browser store forms?05:30
kalikianahyper_ch, You mean like firefox's 'Save this password'? Not yet. I am planning a formfill similar to Opera's magic wand - which is more secure.05:31
Jester45!info dillo05:31

hyper_chkalikiana: not only save passwords but store whole forms05:31
kalikianahyper_ch, Yep, also forms.05:31
hyper_chkalikiana: sort of ai_roboform in windows05:31
hyper_chkalikiana: and there's a wand plugin for firefox :)05:32
Jester45there is a plug in for everything05:32
TheSheepit's good to store form contents in history, so that when you hit "back" you don't have to fill it again05:32

hyper_chhitting back reloads the webpage... it doesn't just go back05:33
TheSheephyper_ch: huh? it does that for me...05:33
Jester45Eagle_101: its a lot lighter but it doesnt have support for css and other things05:33
hyper_chkalikiana: so have I... to bad there is no option of deleting logins from that ff wand plugin05:33
hyper_chTheSheep: it does not for me05:33

rollerskatejammshehe09:24
TheSheeprollerskatejamms: that's because both GNOME and KDE bypass the normal mechanisms and hardwire the fonts09:24

TheSheeprollerskatejamms: because it only works for some hardware and settings09:24
rollerskatejammso ok09:25
rollerskatejammsTheSheep, so gnome and kde work in a way that could break on some hardware?09:25
TheSheeprollerskatejamms: for exampl,e if you have an exceptionally large resolution (and the monitors are developing fast), the default hardcoded font might be a little unreadable...09:25
rollerskatejammsTheSheep, Right but you can make it bigger09:25
rollerskatejammssystem -> preferences -> font09:26
TheSheeprollerskatejamms: not to mention devices with unusual pixel shape09:26
TheSheeprollerskatejamms: but with the current system, you don't have to09:26
rollerskatejammsTheSheep, yeah but the current system makes the fonts shrink automagically09:26
TheSheeprollerskatejamms: or ratherm you wouldn't have to if just the programmers didn't hardcode everythin in their applications09:26
rollerskatejammsAnyway the bug is no big deal for me. I just fix it each time. But my friend wants me to put ubuntu (read xubuntu) on his PIII 700mhz with 128mb of ram, and he defninitely wouldn't have a clue how to fix it. I can do it for him but thats besides the point.09:28

TheSheepto make things even worse, not all monitors report their resolution properly09:33
rollerskatejammslol09:37
rollerskatejammsso theres nothing to be done?09:37

Mercheloyeah, but only 64 from the alternate CD11:07
sb73542I'm asking because at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/feisty/release/  it says:11:07
sb73542The desktop CD allows you to try Xubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 128MB of RAM to install from this CD.11:08
EnlilHmm, i've a problem ^^. I'me now logged in the "failsafe term" session, cuz my usual xfce session goes wrong. Actually, (with the xfce one), I don't see the two bars (at the top and at the bottom of the screen) :s11:08
Merchelosb73542: how much ram do you have?11:08

Jester45Enlil: type exit -> login xfce -> press alt + F2 -> type xfce4-panel -> click run -> enjoy your bars11:09
sb73542cool.  If I could recommend something to the devs, I would say it's important to keep the req's to 128MB, that's probably the most common for a low end machine11:09
Merchelohaha, i asked a friend what would be an alternate to windows server, he replied with11:10

sb73542huh, nobody mentioned NetworkManager in the reviews I've read.  So Xubuntu 7.04 has a GUI for both ethernet and wifi connections that doesn't depend on gnome?11:12
vidd_laptopsb73542, that is correct11:12
