nixternalmdke: I was wondering if it would be at all possible for at least the Kubuntu docs to go back to a dual license or GFDL/GPL seeing KDE docs are that way and being CC-by-SA I can't pull information from them.06:54
=== nixternal will be afk for a few..lunch time
Admiral_Chicagooh nose...licenses.07:04
=== j1mc is now known as j1mc|lunchtime
Admiral_Chicagohey there jjesse07:20
jjessehiya Admiral_Chicago07:29
=== glatzor [n=sebi@p57aef6f5.dip.t-dialin.net] has joined #ubuntu-doc
mdkenixternal: do you actually need to pull information from them? Can't you just integrate the documents alongside the distro ones? That's what we do with the Gnome docs, which are also under another license. This jumping around with licenses is pretty worrying, tbh. It's difficult to accomodate every potential source07:50
=== j1mc|lunchtime is now known as j1mc
nixternalmdke: sure we can do that, however I don't know about Yast, but utilizing KHelpCenter, if I link to the KDE documentation and a user clicks the link, it takes them away from the Kubuntu documentation for one08:17
nixternalif I can just take a snippet of the documentation from KDE and include it with Kubuntu documentation, then I don't have to do this, and the user doesn't lose their location within the Kubuntu documentation08:18
=== froud [n=sean@dsl-242-140-210.telkomadsl.co.za] has joined #ubuntu-doc
mdkenixternal: to be honest, I don't think that the user is likely to make a distinction between locations. There should be one location, with all documents integrated so that you don't have this problem08:37
nixternalhow would you go about integrating them into one location?08:38
nixternalthat sounds promising actually08:38
jjessehiya nixternal08:38
nixternalhiya jjesse08:38
jjessethat does sound really cool08:38
mdkenixternal: aren't any kde docs already slotted into the existing system?08:39
nixternalthey are in KHelpCenter yes, but they are not in Kubuntu docs due to the licensing now08:39
mdkehow do you define "kubuntu docs" if not "everything in khelpcenter"08:39
nixternalI removed all of the stuff from KDE docs that were in the Desktop Guide when transferring over to the tbh layout08:39
nixternalkubuntu docs is just a small portion of the documentation within Kubuntu/KDE08:40
nixternala very small portion actually08:40
mdkeyes, of course08:40
mdkeand all of that documentation is accessed through the same location, right?08:40
nixternalcorrect08:40
mdkeor is it kept separate?08:40
nixternalit is all accessible via the front page of KHelpCenter in a TOC08:41
mdkeok. I'm finding it quite hard to understand what the problem is08:41
nixternalwell if I link to a KDE document just so the user can read a small snippet to understand further what I am trying to say, it takes them away from the Kubuntu doc they are/were reading08:42
nixternalthen when they are done reading a small snippet, then they have to relocate where they were previously08:42
mdkebut they are still within the help center. That sounds like pretty standard behaviour, tbh08:42
nixternalannoying, yet not life threatening08:42
jjesseis there a "back button" that would bring them back to what they were reading/08:42
=== jjesse doesn't spend much time in khelpcenter
nixternalnot in KHelpCenter for 3.5.x08:43
mdketake Ubuntu; at https://help.ubuntu.com/ you have the TOC. the third and fourth bullet points are primarily upstream docs. If the user clicks on one of them, then wants to see the TOC again, they have to go back, that's kinda normal08:43
nixternaleither do I, I would love to just use Konqueror for help08:43
nixternalyes, but from a usability standpoint, they shouldn't be taken away from where they were originally..heck if a user could right click on a link and open it in a new tab would make me happy08:44
nixternalwould be nice if there were more KHTML parts in KHelpCenter..that would curb a lot of things08:44
mdkesounds to me like you are simply missing a back and forward button08:45
jjessebut they don't neccasrily know they are leaving things,08:45
mdkeopening links in the same window is standard practise for browsing08:45
jjessei agree w/ mdke08:45
nixternaljjesse: correct08:45
nixternalmdke: you just gave me an idea with the back/forward buttons...that means more hacking in khelpcenter..yay ;)08:45
mdke:)08:47
=== nixternal wishes we would throw out KHelpCenter and start fresh

Super_Cat_Frog_hi - does anybody know where i can get an 'all in one page' version of the ubuntu official docs for feisty?09:05
LaserJockI don't think that exsits currently09:12
LaserJock*exists09:12
mdkewe should ship09:16
mdkea tarball with everything, for offline browsing on windows09:16
mdkeif we move everything to the wiki, we can look into providing something like that09:17
LaserJockyeah09:19
LaserJockif I had time I'd probably dedicate almost all of my doc team efforts into HTML and PDF forms09:19
LaserJockI'm usually either not in Ubuntu or not in the version I need to read about09:20
LaserJockI like the PDF/HTML versions09:20
jjessei do too09:20
LaserJocknot that the on-system documentation is less important09:20
LaserJockit's just with the TBH it's not as easy to get good online/PDF docs built09:21
