superm1how you get your guide data12:28
superm1you can see the initial configuration page section of this page12:28
superm1https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Feisty_Backend_Frontend_Desktop12:28
CDG52so i would guess i need to set up an xmltv account12:28
superm1for more information about it12:28
superm1and how to configure things in mythtv-setup12:28
CDG52so i got my zap2it account12:33
CDG52and now i can scan for channels12:34
CDG52wait nvm12:34
CDG52different sectin12:34
CDG52o wait it scans12:34
CDG52but finds nothing12:34
superm1you shouldnt need to scan with a zap2it account12:35
superm1the channel data is provided with the guides12:35
CDG52ok now im confused01:02
CDG52went through the whole setup01:02
CDG52and i run mythfrontend01:02
CDG52and it says cant connect to backend01:02
CDG52still01:02
superm1is the log showing it running now01:02
superm1(/var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log)01:02
CDG52same issue01:03
superm1did you try to restart the backend process?01:03
superm1or no01:03
CDG52i dont know how01:04
superm1ah okay01:04
superm1just restart the PC01:04
CDG52ill reset the computer01:04
superm1it will be the easiest01:04
CDG52im pritty sure its gonna blackscreen me01:04
superm1(given sudo permissions and such)01:04
CDG52again instead of reboot01:04
CDG52my biggest question is why does it blackscreen me when it goesto shut down01:05
superm1at this point - i'm not sure.01:05
CDG52like numlock works01:06
CDG52but it shows nothing01:06
superm1can you ctrl-alt-delete ?01:06
superm1to restart01:06
CDG52it beeps and thats it01:06
superm1or can you alt-sysrq S U B to do it then?01:06
CDG52huh?01:06
superm1hold ALT and SYSRQ (Print screen)01:06
superm1and then in succession01:07
superm1press01:07
superm1S01:07
superm1U01:07
superm1B01:07
CDG52ok so frontend started01:07
CDG52gives me a bluescreen01:07
CDG52how do i change channels01:07
superm1gives you a blue screen when you go to "watch tv"?01:07
CDG52yes01:08
superm1did you set the input appropriately?  to use coax01:08
superm1rather than svid/01:08
superm1composite01:08
CDG52probably not01:08
CDG52how would i check that01:08
superm1mythtv-setup again01:09
CDG52ok01:09
CDG52if i knew where my svideo adaptor was id test this theory out01:09
CDG52ok found my adaptor01:11
CDG52and i have a source in the svideo01:11
CDG52and nothing01:11
CDG52so i dont htink its that01:11
CDG52could it be that it didnt detect any channels?01:11
superm1well it can be that the tuner type wan't properly detected01:12
superm1if you check dmesg01:12
superm1for anything related to it01:12
CDG52why does mythtv hate the mouse?01:13
CDG52it only shows it if you are over a editable feild01:14
CDG52and scanning for channels returns nothing01:14
CDG52and now i cant exit the setup01:15
CDG52lol01:15
CDG52o its finnaly getting channels01:17
CDG52i had to switch it to cable something front another cable setting it had it on01:17
CDG52well i got some tv working01:22
CDG52the spanish channel and relegion channel -_-01:23
CDG52but no sound01:23
superm1CDG52, sorry stepped out for a few min01:30
superm1so the mouse thing,01:30
superm1its disabled by default01:30
superm1it can be turned on in the appearance sectoin01:31
CDG52o good01:31
superm1as for sound01:31
superm1those bt8x8 cards, dont they need to send sound over a line in01:31
superm1or something to that effect?01:31
superm1i don't know for sure01:31
CDG52not sure01:31
CDG52i can get a cable to do line in01:32
superm1is there a line out jack on the back of the card?01:32
CDG52ah yeah in my windows computer i had a internal connectioend to a linein01:32
CDG52and yes there is01:32
CDG52the tv also appears to be gittery01:33
CDG52ok so i pluged in the input audio and nothing01:34
CDG52do i have to inable input?01:34
CDG52enable01:34
superm1hm i'm not 100% on how you configure beyond that point -01:35
superm1was there an option01:35
superm1in mythtv-setup01:35
superm1when you went through01:35
CDG52i dont remember01:35
superm1to say which place to get audio01:35
superm1say /dev/dsp or anything like that01:35
CDG52o yeah01:36
CDG52theres that option01:36
superm1and it was set to /dev/dsp01:36
superm1and what audio input?01:36
CDG52idk01:36
CDG52i have to enter that again01:36
CDG52but my mouse stoped working01:36
superm1ok01:36
superm1either that or01:36
CDG52so i cant right click anymore on the desktop01:36
superm1alsamixer -V capture01:36
superm1will let you adjust capture sources01:37
superm1and volumes01:37
superm1so you can toy there too01:37
CDG52ok01:38
CDG52i hope the mouse works this time around01:38
CDG52when on screen 2 know how to shut down mythfront?01:38
CDG52in screen101:38
superm1ctrl alt left01:39
superm1gets you back to screen 101:39
superm1or killall mythfrontend01:39
superm1note that will restart the x session01:40
CDG52yeah thats what i didnt want lol01:40
CDG52what is us-cable-hrc?01:43
CDG52and irc01:43
superm1higher channel numbers01:44
superm1dont worry about them01:44
superm1you likely want us-cable01:44
CDG52ok01:49
CDG52hmm i guess it would be good to have my zap2it set correctly also01:49
superm1:)01:49

superm1keescook, do you have experience debugging kernel oops' that seem to happen during scheduling?03:40
OpenMediaSounds nasty. What kernel are you on04:01
superm1OpenMedia, its been an ongoing issue for a box i built last year04:05
superm1every 24 hours or so it would freeze04:05
superm1but it was headless04:05
superm1its a feisty box (with latest feisty kernel)04:05
OpenMediaWhat capture cards?04:06
superm1See thats the thing, i pulled all capture cards out04:06
superm1to rule that out04:06
superm1i originally thought it was a pvr-350 dying04:06
OpenMediaAh but are they still mapped in the backend04:06
superm1backend isnt even running :)04:06
superm1i'd love to get this box back up as a backend, but this stability issue is just a huge show stopper04:07
OpenMediaAh.. Real problem04:07
OpenMediaDone the usual stuff? Memtest and disk checks04:07
superm1yup04:07
superm1the kernel oops is always the same thing - its always the same RIP in neigh_periodic_timer04:08
superm1memtest was clean, and DFT passed on all 5 drives04:08
superm1i was thinking heat originally, but even with case side off and a desk fan blowing right at it, (sensors indicates more than acceptable temperatures)04:09
OpenMediaWhat sort of hardware, and any CPU throttling?04:09
superm1same thing04:09
superm1amd64, and it had powernow on before04:09
superm1but i since then disabled it04:09
superm1to rule that out04:09
OpenMediaSMP04:09
superm1single core04:10
OpenMediaLAN?04:10
superm1gigabit on board nforce based04:10
OpenMediaforcedeth then.. Any cards or USB devices?04:11
superm1a parallel ata adapter silicon image man.04:11
superm1but no usb04:11
OpenMediaI use some SIL cards under Centos.04:12
superm1the sil card and the hard drives and ram carried over from an old system04:12
superm1i'd have no way to rule that card out though04:13
superm1big messy lvm that its part of04:13
OpenMediaSorry got me beat.04:14
superm1the unfortunate thing is no kernel core dump is made :(04:14
superm1since its an oops during cpu scheduling04:14
superm1so i'm thinking serial console might be the only way to catch it04:14
superm1aye, i've tried to beat this thing to death figuring it out since last august04:15
superm1so i'm searching for straws04:15
OpenMediaNasty.. So this was happening with Dapper/Edgy as well04:16
superm1well i built the box on a feisty alpha04:16
superm1since feisty was just a month away at the end of august04:17
OpenMediaAnything old left behind?04:17
superm1i've considered just wiping it to go 32 bit and rule that out04:17
OpenMediaFeisty was April.04:17
superm1woah, my mix up :)04:17
superm1it was edgy :)04:18
superm1and moved to feisty04:18
OpenMediaAh.. ok.04:18
OpenMediaYeah i'04:18
superm1but it was an edgy alpha then at that point04:18
superm1and did happen in edgy too04:18
OpenMediaI'd try a 32bit build just in case.04:18
superm1just need to find time to do that yet04:19
OpenMediaKnow the feeling :)04:20
OpenMediaBack soon.04:25

CDG52so anyone know the min size hd to watch live tv with mythbox?04:39
CDG52i had a 1.5gb hd for the os and everything04:39
CDG52and i think it filled up lol04:39
CDG52because the computer frooze04:39
CDG52and now it wont boot04:39
CDG52but atleast i know what to do this time around04:39
CDG52sept for the sound part04:40
CDG52and quality still sucks04:40
superm11.5gb???04:45
superm1thats it ???04:45
superm1thats hardly going to be enough, especially with a bt8x8 card :)04:45
=== superm1 [n=superm1@ubuntu/member/superm1] has joined #ubuntu-mythtv
OpenMediaYou'd want atleast 5Gb for the buffer volume these days05:09
OpenMediaI use an old 10G driver for some prototyping as the 6Gb was a bit small for OS + content05:09
superm1the mythbuntu install itself won't take more than 1.5 gigs, but I would recommend that you leave at least 5 for expansion for the OS, and then as much as possible for the rest of the content05:24
OpenMediaWe currently use 4 or 5G for myPVR systems05:29
OpenMediaJust a single / plus 1Gb of Swap05:29
superm1ah05:29
superm1yea it leaves plenty of room for expansion there05:30
tgm4883_laptopSuperm1, you around05:55
tgm4883_laptophad a quick question, maybe it's nothing.  Something I read and related back to problems I heard about mythtv and database corruption.  Perhaps it has been fixed, or maybe never existed05:56
tgm4883_laptopbut recently I have been hearing about how mysql has so many problems and that postgresql is sooo much better.  Just wanted someone elses opinion on that05:57
superm1tgm4883_laptop, i'm here05:58
superm1there have been several instances that i've seen of database corruption05:58
superm1no real reason why that i've identified though05:58
tgm4883_laptopok, just something that i had been thinking about05:59
superm1because its been to the point that from a fresh install some people randomly get corruption, others dont even when installing the 'mythtv' metapackage05:59
superm1unfortunately mythtv doesnt have support for anything but mysql though05:59
tgm4883_laptopi dont know much about postgresql05:59
superm1unless this has changed within the last few months05:59
tgm4883_laptopah05:59
superm1and i didnt hear about it05:59
tgm4883_laptopthat should be an option, for people that already have it installed and setup06:00
tgm4883_laptopit wasn't something that I had heard for mythtv, just heard that postgresql was better, then remembered I had heard about mythtv and database corruption, and I made the connection and question06:01
superm1ideally i'd like to find how this corruption was even happening in the first place06:01
tgm4883_laptopTrue, corruption is bad in any instance06:02
tgm4883_laptopAnd that should be found and fixed, whereever the problem is06:02
superm1hopefully it will pop up during a few mythbuntu installs as we near alpha 2 and and such06:03
superm1and we can get more empirical data since it is happening in that clean env.06:03
tgm4883_laptopalthough it would be nice to have different database options for people that already have databases setup.  Although i dont know if the programming required for that would be too extensive06:04
tgm4883_laptopwell i will try to corrupt it06:04
superm1it will be very extensive to add support for multiple options06:04
tgm4883_laptopalthough i usually try to do the opposite :)06:05
tgm4883_laptopthats what i figured06:05
superm1and its more appropriate to do such a thing upstream06:05
superm1than at ubuntu-mythtv / mythbuntu level06:05
superm1no needs to "try" to corrupt it.  it is seemingly all random when it happens :)06:05
tgm4883_laptopoh definetly something that should be upstream06:06
superm1so hopefully it just 'happens' to one of us06:06
tgm4883_laptoptrue, but i could install it and try to use it certain ways.  I'll see if I can research what people are doing when it happens through the forums06:06
tgm4883_laptopalthough i probably wont be able to gather hardware data on these individuals06:07
superm1i dont think its caused by a particular hardware liekly06:07
tgm4883_laptopprobably not, but i figure i gotta look at all posibilities06:08
superm1and it did happen to me *once* in a VM back when I was doing the new mysql support for the packages06:08
superm1a few months ago06:08
superm1but I could never reproduce it06:08
tgm4883_laptopi hope .21 gets released soon, it has  a lot of the features i want :)06:08
superm1i'm staying away from that new features page06:09
tgm4883_laptopoh yea?06:09
superm1dont want to be too excited06:09
superm1you know we might not be that far away from it though06:10
superm1http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/roadmap06:10
tgm4883_laptophmm, looking good06:11
tgm4883_laptopI had a thought about a feature for firewire, but not sure how it would work06:12
tgm4883_laptopi have noticed that sometimes i won't be able to get recordings over firewire until i reprime the firewire connection06:13
tgm4883_laptopI also noticed that mythtv knows when it's not getting a recording06:13
superm1it knows in the sense that the file size is 006:13
superm1but how else?06:13
tgm4883_laptopi only noticed that in mythweb that it has the show size listed as B06:14
tgm4883_laptopand B isn't a number that I have heard of06:14
tgm4883_laptopso i figured it knew06:14
superm1does repriming the connection in the middle of use hurt?06:15
superm1as in ruin the recording?06:15
tgm4883_laptopthats the thing though, there is no recording06:15
tgm4883_laptopthats why i have to reprime06:15
superm1well the reason i ask06:15
superm1maybe consider putting together a cron job06:15
superm1that would try to reprime every 30 min or so06:15
tgm4883_laptopin an idle situation, i wouldn't have to reprime, but thats asking too much of the cable company06:16
tgm4883_laptopthat would work, but one problem06:16
tgm4883_laptopFor some reason, i cannot reprime when the cable box is on the same channel06:16
tgm4883_laptopso the steps i perform to reprime is06:16
tgm4883_laptop1.  manually change the channel on the cable box06:17
tgm4883_laptop2.  run the firewire primer script after sshing into the box06:17
tgm4883_laptopso it's step 1 that causes the problem06:17
superm1thats a pretty nasty hack to have to do06:17
tgm4883_laptopyea, it doesn't happen often.  Maybe once a week.  And maybe the problem will go away when the firewire drivers mature06:18
superm1i would guess this only happens on certain stations too?06:19
superm1well wait, you say once a week06:19
superm1you know what it might be06:19
tgm4883_laptopwhats that?06:19
superm1the cable company may push a firmware update to the box06:19
superm1forcing a soft reboot on it06:19
tgm4883_laptophmm, hadn't thought about that06:20
superm1in which case that would make perfect sense why you had to reprime06:20
superm1the old settings were lost on the reboot of it06:20
superm1so has this happened consistently at the same time every week?06:20
tgm4883_laptopi'll have to check, logically they would increase the firmware version # right?06:20
superm1logically yes06:21
tgm4883_laptopcould be, i haven't done that much watching of it06:21
tgm4883_laptopill get the firmware number of it and keep a log of when it happens06:21
superm1you can setup your priming script to change the channel for you via firewire too06:21
superm1via the 6200ch app (or the sa3250 equiv)06:22
tgm4883_laptophmm, that might work, although would cause a problem in a cron script (unless they do it at the same time each week)06:22
superm1my cable co never did updates that frequently, but never know with yours06:23
tgm4883_laptopi'll check it out, see what I can come up with06:23
superm1(of course i'm saying back when i had firewire - haven't had it for about 1 yr now)06:23
tgm4883_laptopdid i see on here a couple days ago about a lightscribe plugin?06:23
superm1if so, i missed said discussion06:24
tgm4883_laptopI got to start logging this channel so i can go back06:24
superm1its already logged at http://people.ubuntu.com/~fabbione/irclogs/06:25
tgm4883_laptopthats even better06:25
superm1my local logs show June 07 at 11:27CST laga and maniacxs06:26
superm1maniacxs seems to have a lightscribe patch for mytharchive06:26
superm1interesting06:26
superm1laga, do you know who this manicxs is?06:26
superm1and where said patch is?06:26
tgm4883_laptopI would be interested in knowing what that patch does and testing said patch when I get my new lightscribe drive06:27
superm1i think the LaCie drives have a linux app06:27
superm1for lightscribe06:27
tgm4883_laptopyea they do06:28
superm1http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=1080306:28
tgm4883_laptopalthough it doesn't require a lacie drive (worked with my HP)06:28
tgm4883_laptopbut my HP broke, lasted less than a year06:28
superm1ah06:29
tgm4883_laptopwonder what the script would print on the dvd?06:29
superm1the metadata i'd guess06:30
tgm4883_laptopsweet06:30
tgm4883_laptopcause my handwritting sucks06:30
superm1we'll have to see what laga says when he comes back06:31
superm1about it06:31
tgm4883_laptop:( After reading the .21 release notes I still think mythtv is missing a feature06:32
tgm4883_laptopalthough the rest look good06:32
superm1whats it missing?06:32
tgm4883_laptopwhen your watching live tv, how come there isn't something that (if your using a tuner it needs) that warns you of an upcoming recording?06:33
tgm4883_laptopkinda like tivo does?  It's the one reason i don't watch live tv, cause i don't want to mess up my schedule06:33
superm1there is....06:33
superm1it tells you that its going to switch06:33
tgm4883_laptopreally?06:34
superm1and gives you an option to stick where you are06:34
superm1and reschedule06:34
tgm4883_laptopSweet, I did not know that06:34
superm1yea i've seen it come up when my roomates at school watch live tv and i walk into the appt06:34
tgm4883_laptopwell I take it back, MythTV is the best thing since sliced bread06:34
superm1haha.  i might have to use that quote at ULive now06:35
tgm4883_laptopwell its a good idea your keeping away from this page, i cant wait for .21 now06:38
superm1haha06:38
superm1i've heard a few from those chatting about them, like recording groups and the mythweb flv player06:39
superm1but thats about it06:39
tgm4883_laptopoh no, its all about the flag that shows if you have watched a program or not06:40
=== superm1 pretends he didnt just hear anything about said flag or infer that it is related to auto expiring priorities depending when you've watched a program
=== tgm4883_laptop denies saying anything to that effect
superm1well it would be most ideal if the release was in the next month or two though06:44
superm1would still give us time to sort out all odds and ends with the packaging06:44
tgm4883_laptopyes that would be good06:44
superm1in time for gutsy06:44
superm1ah i was gonna mention.  i got my buddy to decide to take up one of the specs that was thrown out here a bit back06:45
superm1he needed a project for the summer06:45
superm1so he is going to handle writing the firmware finder06:45
tgm4883_laptopsweet06:45
superm1that will detect your cards against a list of cards known to need firmware06:45
superm1and grab, install, etc06:46
superm1he's a big gentoo guy though, so it was rough convincing him to do something for mythbuntu.  the selling point was that he could keep it on bzr and eventually get it into gentoo too06:46
tgm4883_laptopwould it also load any drivers that needed loaded (thinking about feisty and my HD5500)06:46
superm1that could be a good idea - for it to automatically parse and add to /etc/modules06:47
superm1i'm not sure if the cx88 bug is going to be fixed for gutsy06:47
tgm4883_laptopwho does all the plugins, is that the mythtv guys or independent developers?06:48
superm1which plugins06:49
superm1mythplugins?06:49
tgm4883_laptoplike mythweb06:49
superm1the mythtv guys06:49
tgm4883_laptopah06:50
tgm4883_laptopdo they do mythvideo too?06:51
superm1yes06:51
superm1anything in the mythplugins suite are official plugins06:51
superm1and part of the mythtv project06:51
superm1others like mythstream or torrentocracy arent06:51
tgm4883_laptopah06:51
tgm4883_laptopis there an rss plugin?06:52
tgm4883_laptopsomething like a news ticker at the bottom of the screen?06:53
superm1not that i know of06:53
superm1you can probably make one yourself though pretty easy06:53
superm1with shell scripting06:53
superm1and the current mythtvosd06:54
tgm4883_laptopjust found the unofficial plugin page06:54
tgm4883_laptoplooks like i need to install some of these06:55
superm1tgm4883_laptop, if you'd like to package some of these ( or learn to package for that matter), i can see some of them being useful to others too06:57
tgm4883_laptopi would like that06:57
tgm4883_laptopsome of them are definetly useful06:57

tgm4883_laptopi'll try to put something together and let you know06:59
superm1sounds great06:59

CDG52so i ran into the issue that my os wont start anymore07:19
CDG52because my hard drive is full from watching tv07:19
CDG52which i must say turned out to look like crap07:19
CDG52very fuzy07:19
CDG52and almost slow07:19
superm1CDG52, those bt8x8 cards are very eh quality07:20
CDG52and its on a 2.6 celerone with 512mb07:20
superm1did you end up finding a bigger hard drive to work with?07:20
CDG52i have one.... but idk if i wanna wipe it07:20
CDG52it has a backup of my old windows os07:20
CDG52its 20gb07:20
CDG52and its like full07:20
CDG52so i couldnt even part it to work with me07:20
CDG52any suggestions for a new card07:21
CDG52i think im gonna get this working and connect it up to my projector07:21
superm1CDG52, PVR-XXX cards07:21
CDG52but ive been strugling07:21
superm1150,250,350,50007:21
CDG52well i mean by any maker idc if its haupage07:21
superm1its literally a night and day difference07:21
CDG52what would you suggest07:21
superm1the 15007:21
CDG52you like haupage or ati or nvideo stuff?07:21
CDG52hmm well ill take a look07:22
CDG52i think last time i saw one for about $6007:22
CDG52for the 150 MCE07:22
superm1well nvidia for a graphics card, hauppauge pvr-150 for capture07:22
CDG52nvidia makes a capture card07:22
CDG52same with ati07:22
CDG52theres a few different companys out there that do it besides hauppauge07:22
superm1i'd still recommend the hauppauge though07:22
CDG52and i wondered if there was any other good company07:23
CDG52ok07:23
CDG52i got my first hauppauge card years ago07:23
superm1the pvr-xxx cards are among the most popular with mythtv users07:23
CDG52back in 97 maybe?07:23
superm1because they have hardware mpeg2 encoding07:23
CDG52ah07:23
superm1the card you have right now puts out raw data07:23
superm1and has your cpu do all the work07:23
CDG52know of any dual tunner cards?07:23
CDG52that require only one cable07:23
superm1pvr-50007:23
CDG52is it like $200?07:24
superm1110-12007:24
CDG52o not bad07:24
superm1i got mine for 130 last year, and costs dropped since then a bit07:24
CDG52yeah online its $13007:24
CDG52ah so you have the dual tuner?07:24
CDG52i dont even know why i want to drop the money for it, i download most of my tv07:25
superm1i have a pvr-500, a pvr-250, pvr-350, air2pc hd5000, and silicon dust hd homerun07:25
CDG52o wow why so many?07:25
superm1well the easy (short) answer is because i've had several mythtv setups that i've merged07:25
superm1but also, i record from a variety of different sources07:26
CDG52ah07:26
CDG52any of those do HD?07:26
superm1the hd5000 and the hd home run07:26
superm1both do07:26
superm1tgm4883_laptop, can you put in a few words about the pchdtv 5500 too?07:26
superm1i believe the pchdtv 5500 does both analog and digital (digital HD)07:27
CDG52ah07:28
CDG52think i should get the mce kit or the normal version?07:28
CDG52for wintv07:29
superm1wintv?07:29
CDG52hauppage07:29
CDG52wintv is there product line07:29
superm1oh still pvr-xxx cards though07:29
CDG52yeah07:29
superm1never knew the full name i guess :)07:29
CDG52just seems to come with a remote and stuff07:29
CDG52lol07:29
superm1thats up to you, if you need a remote and such07:29
CDG52yeah its really the WinTV-PVR-50007:29
CDG52well i have a windows remote think that would work?07:30
superm1do you have a receiver?07:30
CDG52one of the windows media center remotes07:30
CDG52yeah07:30
superm1yea those work07:30
superm1i use them myself07:30
superm1actually very decent products07:30
CDG52getting those to work on a none windows mce was harder then hell07:30
CDG52i tried to install it on windows xp pro07:30
CDG52and wow... never had so much trouble in my life07:31
superm1well eventually we will have setup for them integrated in the mythbuntu installer, but atm they are described on the lirc wiki page07:31
superm1i'm not sure if ubotu knows about them though07:31
superm1!lirc07:31
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about lirc - try searching on http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi07:31

CDG52darn lol i was hoping to have plug and play07:32
CDG52o wells07:32
CDG52i dont need it untill i get sound working anyways07:32
superm1well the ubuntu media center team is working towards plug and play support, but i dont know their progress on that front07:32
CDG52ah07:32
CDG52does the fm radio work in mythtv?07:33
superm1not in mythtv itself to my knowledge.  there was a 3rd party plugin made for it some time back07:34
CDG52sorry i ask so many questions but i like it when i can ask someone07:34
superm1but i never looked into it07:34
CDG52ah07:34
superm1not a big deal, i'm full on info, might as well spread the knowledge :)07:35
CDG52hey do you know how to access windows shares with mythtv, because I have almost all my videos on a windows computer07:35
CDG52all i use linux for is my laptop07:35
CDG52at the moment07:35
superm1you'll need to set up samba07:35
CDG52no problem there07:35
CDG52but when i went ti video i couldnt even figure out how to make it run07:35
superm1make a mount point, and set up the mount command in /etc/fstab07:36
CDG52ah07:36
CDG52thats how07:36
superm1so if you find a guide that points out how to mount a samba share on the filesystem, just mount it under the directory currently set to be used for mythvideo07:37
superm1then when you refresh the video list, things will show up07:37
CDG52ok cool07:37
CDG52i have a few shares07:37
CDG52i wonder if i could make a script07:37
superm1well you can make several mount points07:37
CDG52to auto mount them07:37
superm1and they will all be handled from /etc/fstab07:37
superm1on startup07:37
CDG52hmm now my biggest question is, should i drop $70 on a tv card when i have one that works fine in windows and better quality then in linux.... or should i buy a 20" widescreen monitor for double that07:38
superm1buy the tv card, invest the money you saved on the monitor, and then after earning on that investment, buy the monitor07:40
superm1:)07:40
CDG52haha07:40
CDG52true07:40
CDG52but i download almost all my tv07:41
CDG52only thing i would use it for is those few oddball things which dont appear on torrents really fast07:41
superm1i used to as well, but the quality of my recordings (at least for HD stuff) is better than any torrent07:41
CDG52heck im mostly setting up mythtv because i want a media center for my download stuff07:41
superm1haha07:41
CDG52eh not me plus its comericaless07:41
CDG52and i dont pay for HD >_<07:42
CDG52would be another fee07:42
superm1well so is my recordings (commercial flagging skipping in mythtv)07:42
superm1i dont pay for it either07:42
superm1the big networks broadcast the HD stuff OTA07:42
CDG52how do you get it? besides on basic channels07:42
CDG52ah07:42
superm1and also the same stuff on cable07:42
superm1I dont bother with premium HD channels or anything like that07:42
CDG52you can commerical flag?07:42
CDG52how does that work07:42
superm1you didnt know mythtv did this?07:42
superm1:)07:42
CDG52nope07:43
CDG52no idea07:43
superm1it has a set of 5 or so algorithms that it uses07:43
superm1to detect commercials07:43
CDG52haha how is that possible07:43
superm1so while the recording is going, it will run through 2 of them07:43
superm1and once it finishes07:43
superm1it does the last 307:43
superm1there is a logo detection, aspect ratio change, black frame detection, and what else07:43
superm1i dont remember the other 2 off hand07:43
CDG52ah07:44
superm1but then when you go to watch07:44
CDG52what if a show has a fake commerical i nit?07:44
superm1it can be set to automatically skip07:44
superm1but you dont have to use that behavior07:44
CDG52like i think tis robo cop has them in it and stuff07:44
superm1you cna just hit the "comm skip" button07:44
superm1to do it instead07:44
superm1well some shows are more accurate than others07:45
superm1overall the accuracy i'd say is 80-85 percent07:45
CDG52cool07:45
superm1so i'll have to go through and manually skip some of the breaks, but most of them its good on07:45
CDG52nice to know07:45
superm1especially my HD stuff07:45
CDG52makesm want it a bit more07:45
CDG52well if i install the xbmc script with mythtv07:45
superm1because a lot networks dont do HD commercials, and there is a big difference then07:46
CDG52i think i might get this so i can watch it on this computer or on my xbox07:46
CDG52ever have a 120gb hd go bad?07:46
superm1no experience with xbmc or myth on an xbox, so cant comment much on that07:46
superm1i've had 5 hard drives go bad in the last 3 years07:46
CDG52its the worst feeling ever and i just found one :(07:46
superm1of varying sizes07:46
CDG52ugh i hate powersupplys going bad07:47
CDG52atleast all it did was fry this hd and the processor07:47
superm1one went bad on my first day of spring break when I had to submit a follow up for job app over spring break07:47
superm1try writing that on opera mini on a cell phone.07:47
superm1ugh...07:47
CDG52haha07:48
superm1anyhow, i really need to get to bed07:48
CDG52yeah same07:48
superm1we'll chat more throughout the week i'm sure07:48
CDG52most deffinitly07:48
superm1night.07:48
CDG52im starting to like this irc07:48

ubotuNew bug: #118515 in lirc (main) "lircd doesn't repeat key press with pinsys remote" [Low,Confirmed]  https://launchpad.net/bugs/11851504:55
DaveMorrisso why are we getting lirc bugs into here?05:02
tgm4883superm1, CDG52, didn't know if you still need my input, but the pcHDTV 5500 does both analog and digital HD.  Can't say much about the analong though as I don't use it (for analog TV, it's a software encoder).  It only has 1 cable input, but also has an svideo input.  The weird thing about the svideo input is that it came with an adapter cable that has both svideo female and composite female ends (weird part is the composite05:17
tgm4883cable is marked video out).  It also comes with a IR receiver that plugs into the card (something else I have never used).  Setup only requires loading 1 driver for mythtv.  It's a great card, with good features.05:17

tgm4883superm1, had a quick question about packaging06:04
tgm4883or i guess anyone06:04
tgm4883can i package a i386 deb on an amd64 system?06:04
superm1_tgm4883, you can, but its kinda a pain to do so06:05
superm1_unless you set up sbuild06:05
tgm4883o06:05
tgm4883ok06:05
tgm4883i'll just do it on both then06:05
tgm4883good thing my laptops i38606:05
tgm4883gives me more practice anyway06:06
superm1_ideally your source package will build on both though06:06
superm1_and you upload the source package to REVU, and then the REVUer will try a build on his system and go from there06:06
tgm4883ah06:07
superm1_tgm4883, for a good example of what will be needed in making a plugin package, you can see the mythplugins source package (apt-get source mythplugins)06:09
tgm4883ok06:09
superm1_although a few things have changed for gutsy, i can guide you through those as you get to them06:09

lagathe mythbuntu team could also provide binary diffs (using xdelta, AFAIK)06:19
superm1_DaveMorris sent me an email about doing that, and what worked and didn't work06:19
superm1_i dont recall the details of it though06:20
superm1_and we havent done a new ISO since the alpha06:20
superm1_wanted to hold off for a few more things to fall into place - particularly Daviey's metas06:20
tgm4883yea, just wanted to get it in place for the next update06:20
tgm4883we could also use jigdo if rsync doesn't work06:21
tgm4883although I have used neither so can't recommend one or the other06:21
superm1_tgm4883, it looks like xdelta is what worked06:22
superm1_when Daviey did it06:22
tgm4883ah06:22
superm1_it may or may not be worth it though depending on if we use gutsy as a base06:26

DaveMorrissuperm1 I never mailed you about it06:28
superm1_DaveMorris, yea Daviey did06:28

tgm4883kruuli, you should be able to do apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y from the terminal and it will grab the new packages08:14
kruulihow do i access the terminal from the mythbunt screen?08:14

tgm4883superm1_ are you around?08:29
kruuliEPIA M micro atx 1ghz 256mb ram and 80gig hd08:29
kruuligeforce 4 64mb08:30
tgm4883or superm108:30
kruulithe dir its complaining about is var/chache/apt/archives08:31
tgm4883I don't know alot about the live environment, im hoping someone else is around that knows more about it08:33
kruuliah ok .. common people dont be shy! :>08:34
kruulitgm4883 gonna try a restart on that pc .. had a couple of failed trys before so maybe it will fix the problem08:39
tgm4883ok, keep me updated08:39
Davieykruuli: playing catch up here.  Tried adding sudo infront?08:53
tgm4883Daviey, we added that but now he's getting disk space errors08:54
DavieyI see you did that.. :)08:54
Davieytgm4883: probably small ram size.08:54
DavieyIf running from livecd - your using the RAM as a hardrive08:54
Davieyso any updates are done within the RAM08:55
tgm4883Thats what I figured, was wondering if there was some why to get around that08:55
Davieyhmm.. maybe removing ubiquity, doing a clean and reinstalling08:55
Davieythat might do it08:55
tgm4883hmm let me test that in my VM08:56
Daviey"df -h"  to monitor how much free 'space' you have08:57
tgm4883arg, i must have inadvertedly deleted my mythbuntu iso08:58
rogue780|mythsrvwhen did we stop putting the .h at the end of header files in c++ with the #include statement?09:02
rogue780|mythsrvthat kinda threw me off09:02
kruulitgm4883 i had some luck..09:03
tgm4883oh yea, did it work or more problems elsewhere09:03
kruuliafter the reboot everything worked except upgrade returning one error on linux-image - 2.6.2009:04
kruuliusr/bin/dpkg error code (1)09:04
Davieytgm4883: you don't need the .h extension on the include statement if it is a 'C Library'09:04
kruuliand when i try the install after that the pc speaker just gives me 2 peeps and the installation window dissapears09:05
tgm4883Daviey, I think you mean rogue780|mythsrv09:05
Davieysorry09:05
tgm4883np09:05
kruulialways happens when im about to pick my keyboard layout09:05
Davieykruuli: what is your kb layout?09:05
kruuliswedish09:05
DavieyHmm. can you select a different country and see if it goes bang?09:06
Davieyie english09:06
rogue780|mythsrvDaviey, it wasn't always like that was it? I seem to remember not getting warnings for doing that09:06
kruulii see you were talking about ram .. had some problems with installing only ubuntu before .. solved that buy killing some processes whlie installing from the live cd09:06
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: yeah. around 2000 it became unecessary to add .h09:07
kruuliok will try that Daviey09:07
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: actually VS 6.0 (1998) droppe that requirement IIRC09:08
tgm4883kruuli, that was with the not enough disk space error.  Shouldn't be causing the new problems09:08
rogue780|mythsrvhm. good to know09:08
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: keep up at the back09:08
Daviey:)09:08
Davieykruuli: I'm not certain; but it could be because we haven't done translations to non english.09:09
Davieykruuli: But soon we will need translations.  So if your willing that would be appreciated.09:10
rogue780|mythsrvanyone know of a way to access a mysql database from c++?09:12
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: there are some great guides on google09:13
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: we use a nice wrapper class09:13
kruuliDaviey that was not the problem .. it closes the window before i get to select anything on that part09:22
kruuliDaviey sure i can helt with that09:23
kruulihelp*09:23
kruulibrb09:23
tgm4883hmm, just tried what kruuli posted in my VM, I can't reproduce that problem (I did have the same problem with the new linux kernel, but only when running with 256MB ram, upped to 512 problem went away)  With 256, I also kept crashing when trying to partition the HD09:28
tgm4883Perhaps it is certain options he is selecting09:29

Davieysorry09:56
rogue780|mythsrv'tis ok09:58
rogue780|mythsrvDaviey, worry not. with a few "-I" options with g++ I was able to get everything to link correctly10:13
Davieyrogue780|mythsrv: great10:13
rogue780|mythsrvI hope people don't mind all the off-topic I bring in here...oh well10:14
tgm4883Hmm, it seems 256MB isn't enough memory to apt-get upgrade and run the installed10:14
tgm4883installer10:14
lagano worries ;)10:14
rogue780|mythsrvback on topic though... superm1, I've been doing some preliminary work on the gdm screen10:15
tgm4883although this problem should disappear with the release version, providing they install before an upgrade10:16
kruulitgm4883 so the ram is the problem? :/10:34
kruulicant i make a bigger swap or plugin a usb memory stick or something? :p10:35
tgm4883I think so, I dont think there is enough to do the apt-get upgrade AND the install10:35
tgm4883there should be some workarounds though10:35
tgm4883and im looking into it10:35
kruulisounds great mate!10:35
kruuliill do some digging aswell10:36
tgm4883ok, look for some things such as creating and mounting a swap partition in a live environment10:37
kruuliwhen i did my ubuntu install it also ran out of memory but i killed some processes to solve it10:40
kruuliyou cant do something like that with mythbuntu?10:40
tgm4883i dont think that there are any extra processes to kill10:42
tgm4883most is removed already10:42
kruuliah i see10:42
kruuliis there a way to download the iso file with the updates on it?10:43
kruulian updated mythbuntu iso10:43
tgm4883there isn't one built yet10:45
tgm4883although I may have found a solution10:45
kruulisweet :D10:45
tgm4883ok, im not sure if this will work or not but its worth a shot10:47
tgm4883after you do the apt-get upgrade it should install the updates, except for the new kernel10:48
tgm4883after that, do sudo apt-get clean10:48
tgm4883that will free some space for you10:48
tgm4883then try the install10:48
tgm4883if it still doesn't work, let me know all the options you select so i can do exactly what your doing (minus the same hardware)10:49
superm1_kruuli, you there still?10:49
superm1_I should have a solution for you10:49
tgm4883even better10:49
kruuliok will give it a try tgm488310:49
superm1_sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubiquity ubiquity-frontend-gtk10:49
superm1_rather than the sudo apt-get upgrade10:49
tgm4883kruuli, do that ^^10:49
superm1_because there was an Ubuntu security updates since then, and its too big to extract in the env10:49
superm1_so you can just skip it for now10:49
kruulioh ok .. give me a sec ill give it a try10:50
superm1_k10:50
superm1_rogue780|mythsrv, yo uhere10:50
kruulii should still do the sudo apt-get update? and after that sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubiquity ubiquity-frontend-gtk ?10:51
kruulisuperm1?10:51
superm1_sudo apt-get update10:52
superm1_followed by that second command10:52

DaveMorrissuperm1 if we've fixed the bug in the installer, can we put a new iso on the site?11:03
tgm4883DaveMorris, I think were waiting on one or two more things to happen first11:03
superm1_rogue780|mythsrv, I was going to say get too far into it: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-motu/2007-June/001708.html11:03
superm1_DaveMorris, ideally i'd like to see the metapackages ready first11:04
superm1_and some other preliminary work on proprietary drivers ready too11:04
kruulieverything has gone well so far .. lets see if i make it past 83% on the install this time :)11:07
kruulihum stuck at 15% atm as when i did a clean ubuntu install .. prolly the memory again .. gonna wait a while see if its just a hickup11:09

ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the #ubuntu channel topic)12:03

superm1_sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubiquity ubiquity-frontend-gtk -y && sudo apt-get clean12:05
superm1_so that the downloaded binaries dont fill up the ram drive other than their installed form12:05
